Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus Classic Concert

The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus will present two performances of its annual CLASSIC CONCERT. Tucson's eastside concert will be on Saturday, February 18, 7:30pm at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, 1800 S. Kolb Road. The northwest side presentation is Sunday, February 19, 3:00pm at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1220 West Magee Road.

Under the direction of Dr. Julian Ackerley, the chorus will perform time-honored music representing a wide range of repertoire. Included will be selections by Mozart, Hadyn, and Bach. Vocal artistry comes to life in this acclaimed concert, featuring repertoire of Baroque, Classical and Romantic choral masters as well as twentieth century works. Indicative of the performance styles of the musical eras, the boys' pure treble voices will be joined by the tenors and basses of the Young Men's Ensemble accompanied by strings.

The combined voices will perform Missa Brevis in F by Franz Joseph Haydn and two motets by Anton Bruckner Christus factus est and Locus iste among other selections. All the members of the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, including the younger Training Chorus and TowneSingers, conclude the concert with a grand finale.

Tickets for the CLASSIC CONCERT are $15.00 in advance, $18.00 at the door, and $8.00 for children under 12. Advance tickets are available online at www.boyschorus.org, at the Boys Chorus office 5770 E. Pima Street, or by calling 296-6277.

HEARTFELT AND TOUCHING "LA ESQUINITA USA"

Ruben C. Gonzalez portrays the desperation of young men and women living on the border in "La Esquinita USA."

Playwright and actor Ruben C. Gonzalez puts his purpose right up front – to end the suffering of the children. But not the little children Jesus talks about.

The big children, the muscular teens burned out on drugs, the seductive teens having babies before they are old enough to drive a car to the Emergency Room. Those children.

Gonzalez comes straight from the famed El Teatro Campesino movement, which he joined 25 years ago. His rich theatrical background includes an MFA in Dramatic Ats from the University of California, Davis.

Now Gonzalez brings his own solo performance of “La Esquinita USA,” directed by El Teatro Campesino's producing artistic director Kinan Valdez, to Arizona Theatre Company. They are telling stories based on the real kids Gonzalez knew while working as a substitute school teacher in Southeast Los Angeles.

Without anger or any political agenda Gonzalez acts out the sad tales of several lost adolescents who never asked to be born, adrift in the dying town of Esquinta – a southwestern border place where most everybody is brown or black and lots of people get nicknames like Lencho, Animal, Sleepy, Tweeker, Skinny Black and Wilo.

There's also one named Sunshine who isn't sunny. All their stories are quite bleak, reminiscent of Charles Dicken's recollections from London's bleak underbelly in a different century. But their suffering is the same.

We are all too familiar with the modern elements of teenage self-destruction, the anger and helplessness. The single mothers with four children, working two or three jobs just to pay for rent and groceries. Haggard mothers too busy to plant the seeds of dreams in their own youngsters, simply because “there was too much on her plate, or not enough.”

Using a few props and shifts in lighting, Gonzalez plays a dozen characters remembered by Lencho, the narrator. Central among them is Daniel, in pain as his crystal meth wears off and in a panic because he can't get any more crystal meth until his dealer gets paid $300.

As young Daniel struggles through this predicament, frequently interrupted by cell phone calls – some desperate, some frantic – we meet the others in his ruptured life.

The dramatic set design by Regina Garcia is full of junked out trash cans and discarded tires, dominated by a massive chain link fence and the grime of depression.

Theirs are the forgotten towns and invisible lives we always try not to think about. What Gonzalez does is remind us in a caring way that all these dark and troubled adolescents turned into junkies and criminals used to be bright eyed and happy little tots, full of optimism and eager to learn about their world, without having any idea how heartless the world actually is outside their mothers' kitchens.

If nothing else you should leave “La Esquinita USA” a more compassionate person, remembering those rude and intimidating young adults you see from afar didn't mean to grow up that way. This isn't the personality they wanted, nor the experience they sought.

Gonzalez doesn't offer any solution. The problem is so bad, the solution feels like a long way off. But surely the first step for all of us on this difficult journey must begin with compassion. It has to.

Titania and Bottom – a comedic duet excerpted from Ballet Tucson's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream will feature Connolly Strombeck (as Bottom) and Taylor Johnson or Elizabeth Egleson as Titania (Queen of the Fairies).
 
Romeo & Juliet Pas de Deux – Daniel Precup choreographs a new version of this famous duet depicting tragic love for Ballerina Jenna Johnson and Season Guest Artist Fredrick Davis.
 
Swan Lake Pas de Deux – the famous "White Swan" Pas de Deux expressing undying love from the most revered classical ballet of all times Swan Lake will feature Vasily Lunde and Megan Steffens or Laura Lunde.
 

About Bernardo Bermudez
American-born lyric baritone Bernardo Bermudez was raised in Venezuela, and started his musical education at The Conservatory of Music Juan Manuel Olivares, in Caracas.  Currently living in San Diego, his operatic roles include Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, Silvio in Pagliacci, Valentin in Faust, Belcore in L'elisir d'amore, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Vidal Hernando in Luisa Fernanda, Scarpia in Tosca, Schaunard in La Bohème, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Aeneas in Dido & Aeneas, Mercurio in L'incoronazione di Poppea, Teniente Cantalapiedra in Cecilia Valdes, Count Capulet in Romeo et Juliette, El Dancairo in Carmen, Marullo in Rigoletto.  He also sang Morald in the North America stage premiere of Richard Wagner's Die Feen, as part of Los Angeles Opera's Ring Festival.
 
He participated as a voice fellow at the prestigious summer festivals at The Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, CA, as well as Opera North in New Hampshire.  He received 1^st place in the NATS LA singing competition, 1^st place winner in AEIOU, 39^th Annual Opera Scholarship and Competition, finalist in the Burbank Philharmonic Hennings-Fischer Opera Competition, recipient of the Anne and Michael Towbes Scholarship in Voice, Opera Buffs Grant recipient, semifinalist in the Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition, recipient of the Doug Acker Memorial Vocal Scholarship, and 2^nd place winner in the Virginia Hawk Vocal Competition.
 
About Victoria Robertson
Ms. Robertson has been training as a classical vocalist for over fifteen years.  Her opera and art song performances won her several distinguished vocal competition titles such as the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus Competition, National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition, Musical Merit Competition, and Virginia Hawk Competition.  In 2008 she won the Carlsbad to Karlovy Vary Competition and was sponsored by the city of San Diego to compete in the Dvoák Competition in its sister city in the Czech Republic.
 
Ms. Robertson has been featured at performing arts centers and concert halls worldwide and has performance history with several symphony orchestras and opera companies including San Diego Symphony, La Jolla Symphony, TICO Orchestra, San Diego Opera, and Santa Barbara Opera. In 2010 she performed in the World Premier of Séance on a Wet Afternoon by Stephen Schwartz (composer of Wicked) with Opera Santa Barbara. Victoria has a passion for sacred music and performs concerts and recitals at churches and cathedrals in the United States and in Europe.  She is currently the private student of famed tenor Michael Trimble. She attended both UC San Diego and San Diego State University where she worked on music performance while continuing private vocal study.

What does it really mean to be, "IN THE MOMENT?"  Just as people experience life through the senses, moment-to-moment, so too can actors experience their onstage or on-camera lives.  To be engaging to an audience (or casting director), the actor must be intricately engaged in and responsive to the world around them.  Rather than "showing" the moment, we want to "experience" the moment.  It is IN these connections that we find our most beautiful impulses and an emotional life that is more available to us.

 

Please join us to explore how sensorial work can create an undeniably engaging performance that is alive, relaxed, focused and vulnerable.

 

EACH WORKSHOP BEGINS WITH A RELAXATION SESSION THAT FOCUSES ON SENSORY AWARENESS.

 

From there, we'll do LONG-FORM IMPROVS and/or work on MONOLOGUE OR SCENE MATERIAL you bring in.  We'll also explore OPEN SCENES, which are scenes written with brief, generic dialogue that can be quickly memorized and interpreted in endless ways.  These are SO much fun to work on!

Role Breakdowns

·         Max: (20s to mid 30's) Assistant to Saunders - An aspiring singer. His worst enemy is his own lack of self-confidence. He spends his time as a doormat to his future father-in-law and trying to convince Maggie that he is marriage material. NOTE: This role requires the actor to sing Italian Arias and, at times, speak in an Italian accent.

 

·         Maggie: (20s to 30s) Max's Girlfriend - pretty, quirky; a young woman who doesn't want to settle for the seemingly mundane life she has with Max. She longs for an adventurous fling, one which will allow her to "hear bells.

"

·         Saunders: (mid 50s) Maggie's father and the general Manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company - authoritarian; an uptight man with a short fuse, most of which he takes out on Max. He owns the pressure of the Opera Company.

 

·         Tito: (30s to 40s) A World Famous Tenor known also to his fans as Il Stupendo - imposing; a womanizing Italian who loves Maria, but finds difficulty resisting the advances of the opposite sex, who seem to advance frequently and with considerable momentum. NOTE: This role requires the actor to sing Italian Arias and speak in an Italian accent.

·         Maria: (30s) Tito's wife - Sophia Loren-type: busty, proud, and excitable; a passionate and temperamental Italian woman who is growing weary of her husband's wandering eye (and body) for the opposite sex.NOTE: This role requires the actor to speak in an Italian accent.

 

·         Bellhop: (age open) A bellhop - a highly energetic fan of Tito's, who uses his occupation to get close to the international star. NOTE: This role requires the actor to sing.

 

·         Diana: (mid 30s) a soprano with the Cleveland Grand Opera Company - beautiful, sexy; a member of the opera company who has been "flinging her way through the whole cast." Playing Desdemona opposite Tito, she thinks that he might be her ticket out of Cleveland into the big time.

 

·         Julia: (60s) Chairman of the Opera Guild - over the hill, ex-diva, for whom the Cleveland Grand Opera Company is the center of her small pretentious world.

 Arizona Onstage Productions is debuting Broadway Tonight! a theatre production featuring music from Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, and new Broadway hits including HAMILTON, Something Rotten, Finding Neverland and Matilda. Cast members for this special event include over 40 of Arizona Onstage Arizona's finest singers assembled to present a night of unforgettable songs.

The event is a fundraiser for First Stages Theater for Young Audiences on February 4, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. and will be presented at the Berger Performing Arts Center.The fundraising goal is to continue to provide low and no cost tickets to Tucson area families to see professional stage productions based on children's literature. First Stages Theater for Young Audiences has provided over 2,000 free tickets to the Tucson community. Tickets for Broadway Tonight! are available at wwww.arizonaonstage.org

Youth Engagement

Arizona Citizens for the Arts is always looking for ways to improve Arts Congress and engage more advocates. This year, we are strongly encouraging organizations and schools to engage their young adults and invite them to Arts Congress to begin learning and experiencing the importance of advocating for the arts. Our youngest leaders are some of the most passionate voices for the arts and we think our legislators need to hear directly from them.
