We started doing shows in person on March 20th, and it has certainly been a fun ride.  We thank you for all of the support you showed to our theater as we figured out how to do comedy live and inside our theater again.  It has been awesome to make you laugh over these past 15 weeks, and we are overwhelmed with the response.  We sold out shows, we had multiple levels of limited capacity, and you came out when we were masked and working it all out.  After this weekend's shows, we are going to take a break next weekend to celebrate the 4th of July, and catch our breath for a minute after what has felt like a rollercoaster of emotions the past couple months. No shows next weekend so you and we can celebrate what has been a pretty good 2021 so far, with the people we love, then we will be back at it July 9th bringing the funny back to 4th Ave!

We are excited to bring you a new show opening July 10th.  "The Dirty Tees," a show for real Tucsonans who are here in July living through the heat.  This short form show will be an homage to the city and desert that we love, featuring short games and longer pieces where we honor what it means to be in Tucson in the summer!  So come out and support this show running in the 9pm Saturday timeslot, it will be inside a air conditioned dark theater, just the way we like it, and maybe it will monsoon.  See you there, if you are a real Tucsonan!

Starting with the shows on July 9th we are going to do another update to our COVID policies.  If you are fully vaccinated, you do not need to wear a mask while you are in the audience at the theater.  If you are unvaccinated, we ask that you continue to wear a mask.  As we continue to track downward trends in cases, and the environment people are looking for as they come to shows, this is the next step in our practice.

Our Improv 101 class will teach you the two most important words in the improvisers vocabulary: "Yes, And." These two seemingly simple words open up the door to our six week course that will provide your foundation for comedy improvisation: team-building, trust, speed, active listening, and agreement. Over the six weeks you will specifically learn: grounded scene work, how to develop relationships, create characters, and cultivate the environment within improv scenes. Students learn to be fearless and have fun on stage using the TIM approach to improv.


Sketch 101(Digital Edition)

Over six weeks, students will learn the basics of writing comedy sketches. We will discuss: generating comedic ideas, formulating with a premise, the game of the sketch and sketch revision. Students will write smart two person scenes grounded in reality, and have fun doing it under the TIM Comedy Philosophy!

Dawn's guest this week should be someone we know and love - it's Unscrewed Theater's Executive Director (and long-time performer) Chris Seidman!

Chris has been a performing member of Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed since 2005. He has played in the best (and not-so-best) venues in Tucson, and mostly loved every minute of it.

He's been a teaching improv instructor for eight years. He has studied improv theory and practice with a variety of Improv veterans, including educational directors of Second City and iO (ImprovOlympic). Not to mention collaborating with Unscrewed Theater's well-versed and professional instructor team.

Chris believes the world would be a better place if everyone took an improv class. AND, it's fun! Improv changes lives.

Our guests tonight are Adam Slager & Jim Fry AKA Slager & Fry. This improv duo is from two opposite sides of Pennsylvania - and they've never performed together in person - so they're perfect for our virtual stage.

Jim comes from a long line of performers, from stage, film, musicians and at least one clown! He has studied improv with Steel City Improv and Second City Chicago. He lives in the suburbs of Pittsburgh with his three sons and too many pets!

Adam has studied improv with Philadelphia Improv Theater, Squirrel Theater, Second City, and Upright Citizens Brigade. He lives in the suburbs of Philly with his wife and daughter.

Ready to build a brand new character to improvise with… literally?

We'll take you through some basic puppet construction techniques using things you already have lying around, and you'll transform your new puppet(s) into a complete character with improvised scenes and games!

Suggested supplies: pipe cleaners, socks, plastic jugs with handles, scissors (strong enough to cut through the plastic jug), paper, markers, and any other craft supplies or scraps you happen to have.

As of late, improv via Zoom has felt a little stiff, hasn't it? It's okay. We know it's hard to see the zoom square as a virtual playground rather than a virtual cubicle. However, this physical workshop, led by Elizabeth Byland (co-founder of Queen City Comedy, Professor of Improv at Virginia Commonwealth University, and the other half of Bianchi & Byland) will give you a new creative lens on Zoomprov and the playground that surrounds you, whether you're in an office, a bedroom, or a beautiful theatre!

Forever Plaid is one of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory. This deliciously fun revue is chock-full of classic barbershop quartet harmonies and pitch-perfect melodies! Directed by Chach Snook who was on the National Tour of the show as well as Music Directed by Matthew Holter who is a founder of the doo-wop group The 4GENTS, this show will be sure to delight and move audiences!

Once upon a time, there were four guys (Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie) who discovered that they shared a love for music and then got together to become their idols – The Four Freshman, The Hi-Lo's and The Crew Cuts. Rehearsing in the basement of Smudge's family's plumbing supply company, they became "Forever Plaid". On the way to their first big gig, the "Plaids" are broadsided by a school bus and killed instantly. It is at the moment when their careers and lives end that the story of Forever Plaid begins....

Singing in close harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with overzealous precision, the "Plaids" are a guaranteed smash, with a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles when they're not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950s.

Next to Normal, with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness. Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, Next to Normal was also chosen as "one of the year's ten best shows" by critics around the country, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling manic depression for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family's story with love, sympathy and heart.

This deeply moving piece of theatre provides a wonderful opportunity for performers to explore dramatic material and showcase vocal talents with an energetic pop/rock score. Next to Normal is an emotional powerhouse that addresses such issues as grieving a loss, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life and is ideal for community theatres, as well as colleges and regional theatre companies.

Nunsense is a hilarious spoof about the misadventures of five nuns trying to manage a fundraiser. Sadly, the rest of the sisterhood died from poisoning after eating vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia Child of God. Thus, the remaining nuns – ballet-loving Sister Leo, street-wise Sister Robert Anne, befuddled Sister Mary Amnesia, the Mother Superior Sister Regina, and mistress of the novices Sister Mary Hubert – stage a talent show in order to raise the money to bury their dearly departed. With catchy songs and irreverent comedy and directed by MAC-winning director Samantha Cormier, Nunsense is sure to keep audiences rolling with laughter.

Ages 7 and older

 

 

Build your own puppets and put on a show!
Participants will create a shadow puppet, hand puppet, and scarf marionette.
Friends and family are invited to the final performance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

- Red Herring Puppets is located in the Tucson Mall on the upper level (north side) between Macy's and Forever 21. 
- The closest parking is LOT 6 near the N Stone Ave entrance. 
- We meet from 1:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday. 
- Campers should eat lunch before arriving.
- Red Herring will provide a healthy afternoon snack. 
- We will have water and sparkling water available at all times.
- Supplies are included in the registration fee.
- Campers should wear clothes that can get messy or bring a large smock.
​- Sessions are limited to 10 campers per session.
- At the end of each session, there will be a live performance for family and friends.
