Who We are

F*ST! Female* StoryTellers was founded in 2012 as a way for women and people of marginalized genders to share their stories and have their voices be platformed in the greater Tucson community. We work to promote feminism and equity by empowering women, femme, non-binary, genderqueer, and trans individuals by providing a space for them to be seen and heard! Each month these individuals are invited to share their real life experiences in the form of a 10-15 minute story. Our theme changes every month, but our mission remains the same- give people a space to speak and share. In addition to providing this much needed space, we donate proceeds from the monthly tickets sales of our shows to local nonprofit organizations that promote women, children, social justice and equity, and the arts in order to stay connected and give back to the community that we love. We want to support the community while the community supports the powerful and transformational medium of live storytelling!

F*ST! is incredibly grateful for the warm reception and amazing way the community has embraced us and we couldn’t be happier to be part of Tucson. We encourage women and people of all historically marginalized genders to participate.

THE OPERA'S PHANTOM IS NOW HAUNTING THE GASLIGHT THEATRE, NEVER MIND THAT OTHER BROADWAY SHOW

A true Gaslight Theatre classic, “The Phantom of the Opera,” has returned in a new production to flaunt its soaring wiles once more across a curtained stage of high notes and evil intentions.

Standing tall as that formally attired man behind the white mask is Todd Thompson, defiantly insisting he is the Angel of Music. He also makes us feel the sadness in this angel's heart, an artistic genius longing to make his unknown ingenue Christine Daae the soaring star of the Paris Opera House.

Christine, the shy favorite of the Phantom, is at first flattered by this ghostly force. But as he becomes more demanding, Christine (Kelly Coates) comes to resent his supernatural powers.

But as every Gaslight regular will tell you, the most truly enduring ghost of this theater is Elvis Presley. So no one is surprised when these Parisian singers and company bust out a populist groove, giving their songs a distinctive 1980s rock 'n' roll beat.

The recipe is irresistible. Peter VanSlyke wrote the original show (based on the novel by Gaston Leroux), now adapted for today's audience by Katherine Byrnes and Mike Yarema. They encourage every campy mannerism imaginable to poke more holes in the pompous attitudes of the arrogant Paris Opera House stars.

Madame Carlotta (Heather Stricker) is the haughty soprano, overflowing with diva conceit She is paired alongside the Great Sorelli (Charlie Hall), a baritone also filled with the fullness of himself.

Delivering her non-singing role with an abundance of insider comedy is Samantha Cormier as Madame Giry, a longtime backstage employee of the Opera House.

Yarema completes the romantic links playing Raul, the Count de Chagny. a patron of the Opera and devoted protector of Christine. The harder the Phantom controls Christine, the more desperately she longs for the strong arms of Raul.

The Gaslight's aftershow olio continues to celebrate 1980s rock with a visit to the Ed McMahon (Charlie Hall) television show, ”Star Seekers.” Tribute performers include Weird Al Yankovic, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna and Devo.

“The Phantom of the Opera” runs through Nov. 2, with performances Tuesdays through Sundays at the Gaslight Theatre, 7010 E. Broadway Blvd.

MOLIERE'S CRISP COMEDY "TARTUFFE" MAY BE 362 YEARS OLD, BUT THE ROGUE THEATRE MAKES IT FEEL OVEN FRESH

The villainous Tartuffe (Matt Walley) tries to work his selfish charms on Elmire (Sophie Gibson-Rush).

 

First performed in 1664, Moliere's “Tartuffe” couldn't seem more timely if it was first performed last week. The charming Rogue Theatre production directed by Joseph McGrath, working from the translation by Richard Wilbur, is an immediate theatrical delight.

The combination of stage settings, lighting, costumes, wigs and harpsichord accompaniment that compliments Moliere's dialogue written completely in rhyming couplets create a whimsical atmosphere full of Baroque joy and juice.

Not to give away the ending, but Tartuffe is a charlatan masquerading as a Christian who is later caught and disgraced by a sexual escapade. This piece of classic theater may have been written 362 years ago but the title could easily be updated from “Tartuffe” to “Trump.”

The title role of Tartuffe is played by Rogue veteran Matt Walley wearing a black coat of religious piety, always conniving darker plans even as he affects an attitude of devout service to the Lord.

Determined to reveal this scoundrel's true intentions is a delightful Chelsea Bowdren as Dorine, the animated maid who doesn't trust Tatuffe any farther than she can throw him.

The plot's pivot point is Orgon (Aaron Shand), master of an estate much admired by Tartuffe. He also admires Orgon's wife Elmire (Sophie Gibson-Rush).

Shand's performance travels the arc of complex character change from the innocent Christian who believes in Tartuffe's goodness to the crushed and angry landowner realizing too late that Tartuffe is a scoundrel who just bamboozled Orgon out of all his property and wealth.

In that sense the play becomes a duet of intention between defenseless innocence and arrogant guile.

Adding shades of depth in supporting roles are Bryn Booth as Mariane, the daughter of Orgon, very much in love with noble Valere (Hunter Hnat). Christopher Pankratz is Cleante, Orgon's brother in law, while Cynthia Meier sets a defiant tone as Mme. Pernelle, Orgon's angry mother, determined to defend Tartuffe to her family.

While Moliere's rhymed couplets do bring a certain artificial quality to the conversation, save some of your attention for those rhymes. Lots of them are remarkably clever.

“Tartuffe” runs through Sept. 28 with performances Fridays and Saturdays at7:30 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m., in the Historic Y, 300 E. University Blvd. Tickets are $49; student rush (when available) $15 with student ID.

The University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television Presents The Climate Project

 

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona's School of Theatre, Film & Television (TFTV) proudly presents The Climate Project, an original work of physical theatre that explores the urgent issue of climate change in the Sonoran Desert and beyond. Free performances will take place at the Tornabene Theatre from September 25 to 28, 2025.

 

Devised by Theatre students together with faculty member Rick Wamer, The Climate Project uses the "theatre of metamorphosis" approach – a movement-based form of physical theatre – to reflect on environmental transformation and human impact. The production features a twenty-member ensemble whose performance is the result of a year's worth of collaborative research and creative exploration.

Originally commissioned by Mannakin Theatre & Dance, excerpts from the project have been showcased in Minneapolis and San Francisco, earning praise for their inventive storytelling and relevance.

 

The production has also received support from multiple University of Arizona sources. Funding was provided by the Technology Research Initiative Fund/Water, Environmental, and Energy Solutions Initiative through the Arts Research and Resilience program and College of Fine Arts Small Grants. Additional backing came from the School of Theatre, Film & Television and the College of Fine Arts.

Thanks to this support, the ensemble was able to collaborate with Tucson-based aerial artist Nate Dryden, who worked closely with student performers to incorporate trapeze and aerial elements into the piece, expanding the production's physical vocabulary.

"Stepping into the world of collaborative devising has been a transformative experience, grounding me more fully in my physical presence while lifting me skyward as a trapeze artist," says student Nika Aguilar. "Under the gentle guidance of Rick Wamer and Nate Dryden, I've discovered a balance of grace and strength in my performance practice."

 

"I am so inspired by the perseverance, resilience, and creative collaborative work these students bring to each rehearsal," shares Wamer. "They impress me every day.  I feel so fortunate to be able to guide the ensemble in devising The Climate Project, an issue that they find meaningful and relevant to our times."

 

The Climate Project is the first workshop performance of TFTV's 2025–26 season and serves as the centerpiece of a week-long initiative focused on climate awareness and action across campus.

We're gearing up for one of my favorite times of the year—our Tucson Comedy Arts Festival, happening November 6–15. Planning is in full swing, and we're cooking up a lineup that will bring some incredible headliners to Tucson from all over the country. It's going to be an awesome 10 days of shows, workshops, and community—everything that makes our comedy scene so special.

In the meantime, we've got something equally fun happening right now on our stage: the 3v3 Improv Tournament. Three-person teams are squaring off each week, and you—the audience—get to decide who moves forward. We are in week three, and there are two teams already in the championship. This Saturday, we will send our 3rd team through, then you get to vote one more Wild Card into the finale!

The Soapbox w/New TIM Company Members
(Re)telling Tucson's Story
Friday night at 7:30pm

Joseph Blanco is an electrical engineer who's spent the past few years living in China, Sweden, and around the country before moving to Tucson last year. During the day he is designing sustainable energy projects in the construction and mining industries, and at night he runs a non-profit focused on conducting research and creating programs for aiding fellow Filipino Americans. In his free time hobbies include playing rugby, watching movies, and latest one is learning improv. A chronic over-thinker and pattern seeker, he loves finding unique forms of storytelling to connect with identity, culture, and one another.

Bryan Betz has lived in Tucson off-and-on since 2013. He has been doing aircraft maintenance for the past 12 years and has been performing and writing both music and comedy for over 20. He won first place in the entire state of Alabama in a duo musical theater competition, did social work in Mexico and Scotland, served the military in the Philippines, Korea, and Japan, and he ran a 5k, a 10k, a half marathon, and a full marathon all in one weekend without ever doing more than a 5k before. He has never cussed in his life, has beaten both Tetris and Pac-man, plays the world's smallet trumpet, and he has no idea what else to tell you, other than giving you the full context of this paragraph at the show on September 19th at 7:30pm.

 

Matt Collins has proudly called Tucson home for over a decade, where he teaches high school calculus and precalculus. Outside the classroom, he loves catching live music and comedy, discovering new local eats with his wife, and keeping his crossword streak going strong. Matt has enjoyed playing at TIM for just over a year and is excited to step up to the Soapbox and share a story!  

Julian Pradeep originally grew up in the Pacific Northwest and is a fan of all things Seattle, except the cloudy days. He has lived in Tucson the last 3 years, trying to escape the clouds and working as a Physical Therapist. He spends the rest of his time hiking, traveling, playing chess, and watching tennis. Julian enjoys making people laugh, and calls Improv his great escape. He is excited to be a new company member and join the TIM team! 

Everyone has a story to tell. Four short and personal stories from our special guest at 7:30pm will inspire Tucson's premier improv comedy team.

Tamara Snow (Female Lead; 20’s-50’s; Any Ethnicity): A dying woman who throws one last party to say goodbye. Actor Compensation: $200.

Mary Lewis (Lead; 20’s-50’s; Any Ethnicity): Tam’s best friend. Mary deals with Tam’s situation through humor. Actor Compensation: $200.

Larry Phillips (Co-Lead; LGBTQ Role; 20’s-50’s; Any Ethnicity): Larry struggles to maintain a brave front throughout Tam's party. Actor Compensation: $100.

In a dystopian world where language is rationed to only 1,000 approved words, Alli and her son Orhan live a normal life; going to school, owning and operating a bakery. Life is good until the words "I think I see a city that rues words" are plastered on a wall over the bakery. The City begins a man-hunt for the perpetrator. It is then that our hero, Orhan, discovers that even a single word can change the world.

Join the S&S for this timely tale by the beloved storyteller, Finegan Kruckemeyer, author of This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries and This Girl Does Nothing and You and Me and the Space Between.

This is the third Hybrid meeting of the month which means we meet both in person and on Zoom.  We meet in reality at St Francis in the Foothills, Room 50.
