The Comedy Genius of
Mark Twain II
Opens January 6th
The Comedy Genius of Mark Twain II, an ALL NEW show opens at The Comedy Playhouse on January 6th. The show will present 10 more of Mark Twain's comic essays. Included will be The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavaras County and Journalism in Tennessee.
Born Samuel Clemens in 1835, Mark Twain's book Roughing It, chronicled his adventures with his brother Orion, as they traveled west in 1861. After failing as a miner, he found work as a reporter for a Virginia City Nevada newspaper, the Territorial Enterprise.
It was here that Clemens used his first penname, Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass, in submitting a humorous tale about traveling. Clemens finally settled on the penname "Mark Twain," which was a term from his days as a youth in Missouri. The bottom sounder of a riverboat shouted "Mark Twain", when there was 2 fathoms (twelve feet) of water beneath the hull of the boat, and thus navigation was safe.
In 1865, Mark Twain rocketed to fame when a New York weekly newspaper, The Saturday Press, published The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavaras County. In 1869, Twain published his first book, Innocents Abroad or The New Pilgrims's Progress. The book was a collection of humorous essays and observations he made during a five month cruise through Europe and the Holy Lands in 1867.
