AUDITION NOTICE
DAVID IVES' VENUS IN FUR
PRESENTED BY NEXT STAGE THEATRE SOUTHWEST
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
ARIZONA ROSE THEATRE

Next Stage Theatre Southwest will present David Ives' comedic, sexy and slightly supernatural masterpiece, Venus in Fur, at the Arizona Rose Theatre for 9 performances between January 20 and 30, 2022.

The roles available (both leads) are:

·   Thomas, playwright and director, late 20s-early 50s

·   Vanda, actress, 20s-early 40s

Venus in Fur is extraordinary theater and an actor's cornucopia. An actress from nowhere shows up unannounced and delivers the audition of a lifetime; one that teaches the playwright more about his own work — and himself —than he ever knew. The play is a roller coaster, careening wildly from cold read to fully realized play-within-a-play to role reversals within the interior play and the characters themselves. So not just an actor's cornucopia, but also an actor's challenge.

Per the New York Times, Venus in Fur is a "spooky, sexy comedy," but no dated farce about philandering bosses and naughty secretaries. Venus, rather, is "something darker, stranger and altogether more delicious: a suspense-packed study of the erotics of power, in which the two participants prove to be seriously, almost scarily adept."

The Arizona Rose Theatre, an intimate space with excellent technical capabilities, located on the lower level of the Tucson Mall, will be configured in the round for this run, and is the perfect setting for this taut evening (85 minutes without intermission) of theatre. A little sense of the play is available from the attached promo clip from the Broadway production.

Rehearsals will be begin after Thanksgiving. Due to some generous underwriting support, significant stipends are available for cast and crew, and there will be an extensive promotional campaign. All appropriate covid protocols will be followed.

Mark Klugheit will direct. This will be the seventh full length theatrical work Mark has directed in Tucson, and his previous plays, including Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage and Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, have garnered a total of 19 MAC and Carmen Award nominations.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, August 21 from noon to 3:00 pm and Sunday, August 22 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at St. Francis in the Foothills Church, NW Corner of River and Swan, Room 42. Those auditioning should bring a hard copy resume and head shot. Sides will be furnished electronically one week prior to auditions and will be available in hard copy at the audition site. Masks should be worn, but may be removed while reading by those actors fully vaccinated.

Please contact Director Mark Klugheit (mklugheit@comcast.net) to obtain sides, reserve an audition spot or with any questions.
