A Letter from the Artistic Director

Dear Winding Road Supporters,

As the AD, I sometimes have to make tough decisions.

When omicron first raised its ugly head back in November, I took a wait and see approach to staging our next play, Miss American Pie by Gwendolyn Rice. This play takes place in a working kitchen, and while we watched the news and the graphs, we continued sourcing cabinetry and appliances to use onstage at the Cabaret Theater, knowing that we might not be building that set in the end. Much as we looked forward to continue presenting our shows in person this season, I feel that it is no longer responsible to ask patrons to gather together. Last week, I made the call to take the show online.

Because Winding Road took time to plan alternatives, we're prepared to present the show to you as a fully produced recorded production, NOT a Zoom play. Fortunately, Miss American Pie is an intimate conversation that lends itself well to this format. I've been rehearsing with Ensemble Member Denise Blum in her kitchen for weeks, and Ensemble Member Alex Alegria has designed theatrical lighting to illuminate the space. We are bringing in professionals to film the show, and plan to have Ensemble Members present for our recorded production, to give you the experience of a live audience.

Miss American Pie is truly a treat, both history lesson and baking tutorial. Maggie will teach us how how to make a classic apple pie, including weaving a lattice crust, while remembering the events of election night, 2016.  She'll also share what she learned about American history, reaching back to the first efforts of English colonization. You'll be inspired and enlightened, and I promise you'll be thinking about this one for weeks to come.

Please join us for this very special play. I feel confident that you'll enjoy our online presentation of Gwendolyn Rice's Miss American Pie. We only wish we could have shared this pie with you in person.

With thanks for your continued support,

Maria A. Caprile
Artistic Director
