Eugene O'Neill's play The Emperor Jones garnered tons of attention when it was first staged in 1920, both for the brilliance of his theater and for the talented Black actor Charles S. Gilpin who starred as the titular emperor. In a time of Jim Crow segregation, minstrel shows, and blackface, Gilpin was the first Black man honored by the Drama League for his contributions to theater. The Emperor Jones was the perfect vehicle for an actor's career to take off in, so why isn't Gilpin a household name? The two great artists, Gilpin and O'Neill, fell out when Gilpin refused to say one word written in the play's text...
N gives us a view backstage of The Emperor Jones to peek in on the alternating comradery and conflict that destroyed Gilpin's career.
