 Goin' Retro

Arizona Women's Chorus Presents Rock-n-Roll Spring Concert April 29 at 3 p.m.

It's time to rock out with the Arizona Women's Chorus. The "Goin' Retro" program on Saturday, April 29 features all-time favorite rock-n-roll tunes from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Get into the spirit and dress up - or down - for the concert on April 29 at 3 p.m. at the Catalina Foothills High School Music Hall at 4300 E. Sunrise Dr. Tickets are $20 at the door or in advance online at:  azwomenschorus.org or by calling (520) 404-3148

The women's chorus, conducted by founder and longtime artistic director Terrie Ashbaugh, will perform a variety of retro rock favorites with a live band. Highlights include "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," written by Diane Warren and Albert Hammond and recorded by American rock band Starship, "Joyful, Joyful" from Sister Act 2, lyrics by Glen Hansen, and "Only  Time" by Enya. There also will be audience singalongs of popular Beatle's tunes.

Ashbaugh said, "We sing a highly varied repertoire. Our performances have included music such as the Baroque "Missa de Profunctis," Broadway medleys, Spanish folksongs, jazzy sambas and more. We have commissioned new choral pieces for women's voices by David Childs, Brant Adams, Khris Dodge, Sheena Phillips, Robert Cohen and Mark Hayes."

The chorus was founded in 1981 as the Foothill's Women's Chorus, then changed its name to the Southern Arizona Women's Chorus after its 2006 Carnegie Hall debut. The chorus also performed at the 2016 World War II Commemoration Ceremonies in Normandy, France, for D-Day and at Pearl Harbor for Pearl Harbor Day.

Early in 2022 the Arizona Women's Chorus was reformed as a new 501(c)3, Ashbaugh said. She has led the chorus since 1998. She is also a professional pianist, vocalist and choral arranger.

The 70-plus-member Arizona Women's Chorus traditionally presents two major concert programs a year, plus numerous community outreach activities throughout the season. The repertoire spans from classical music to Broadway, folk, jazz, spiritual, seasonal and other popular songs.  More information on the women's chorus is available at azwomenschorus.org or by calling (520) 404-3148.
