This month, the lighting on film sets generated almost as much heat as Tucson's sizzling summer season. Here's the rundown on the local buzz.

Local Currency

Our offices recently assisted an action-packed western titled The Last Dollar which just finished shooting at Old Tucson and Tucson Mountain Park . Directed by William Shockley and bursting at the seams with major talent (Dermot Mulroney, Jacqueline BissetDominic MonaghanGrainger Hines), this future classic from Thunderbird Pictures employed over 200 local actors and almost 100 local crew over the course of the 20-day shoot. We'll post updates about future screenings of this project when they're announced.

Auto Focus

The talented folks at Atlanta-and-Phoenix-based Zuma Films, (including owner / Executive Producer Barry Thiessen) recently brought us a dazzling commercial for Honda which employed a number of scenic downtown streets as prime locations (all of which were coordinated by longtime Location Manager Jean Davis). Since the finished project isn't yet ready, we're illustrating this story with a photo showcasing the exterior of the Historic Pima County Courthouse, one of the many cinematic locations for the shoot.

Win-Win

Our heartiest congratulations go out to UA School of Theatre, Film & Television (TFTV) faculty members Lisa Molomot and Jacob Bricca, both of whom earned a Peabody Award for their work on Missing in Brooks County, a stirring documentary on the issue of immigration in a rural area of Texas.

Lisa Molomot, adjunct professor in the School of Theatre, Film and Television and the James E. Rogers College of Law, co-directed the film with Jeff Bemis. Jacob Bricca, associate professor at TFTV, was the editor. Molomot and Bricca also served as two of the film's producers.

Using the slogan "Stories that matter," the Peabody Awards honor excellence in storytelling that reflects social issues and emerging voices. Missing in Brooks County is one of eight films to win in the documentary category.

Tricked Out

Join us on Sunday, June 24th at 6pm for a special screening of the rousing new Western drama Double Crossed in Durango (written and directed by Mike Doherty, pictured above on the right) which was shot almost entirely at some of our most spectacular locations: Mescal, San Pedro Chapel, and Trail Dust Town.

A band of unexpected travelers find themselves taking on the overwhelming challenge of robbing the Denver and Rio Grande railroad which travels from Durango, CO to Silverton, CO. Will they encounter their vast fortune or will their adventure end in a derailed catastrophe?

This is your chance to watch the director's cut of Double-Crossed in Durango on the big screen, now with more action, locations, and western drama! For information on ticket prices and more, head over to the website of The Loft Cinema.

Mix & Mingle

It's time yet again for another monthly mixer where all of southern AZ's crew, actors, and everyone in-between can eat, drink, mingle and network.

This month's meeting spot is extra special to us because it was utilized as one of the many camera-ready locations for the upcoming JJ Abram's series for HBO titled Duster, which filmed here in the latter half of 2021.

Date/Time: Wednesday, June 28th, 2023 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
Place: Danny's Baboquivari (2910 E Fort Lowell Rd, Tucson, AZ 85716)
Parking: Ample parking is available
Cost: Free to attend. Drinks and food truck snacks are available for purchase.

As always, these monthly series of free nighttime film community events are co-hosted by Film Tucson and the AZ Production Association.

No need to RSVP--just show up. Look for the Film Tucson banners. Questions? E-mail Monica Lopez at mlopez@visittucson.org.
