Oro Valley Theater Company announces auditions for The Lion in Winter by Oscar-winning writer, James Goldman. Directed by Gene Abravaya
Tuesday, May 7th and Wednesday, May 8th in the Sunset Room of the Oro Valley Community Center. 6 to 10 pm
10555 N La Canada Drive, Oro Valley, 8573
Chinon, France, Christmas, 1183. Henry Plantagenet, King of England and half of France, gathers his family – Eldest son Richard (The Lionheart); Geoffrey, his middle son; and John, the youngest; along with his wife, Eleanor, whom he has temporarily released from prison so she can enjoy the holiday; Henry's current mistress, Alais, Princess of France; and her brother, Philip, the King of France.
Once gathered, the struggle for power and the plotting begins as each conspires either to be Henry's appointed heir and the next King of England or owner of "The Aquitaine," the richest province in France.
"Goldman's screenplay is glorious, both melodramatic and savagely funny." – Rotten Tomatoes 91%
"Brutal; biting, wickedly funny; Game of Thrones meets Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf." – Roger Ebert
Roles that are open:
Richard (30s) – strong; aggressive; Henry's first born. He considers himself the heir already and is willing to fight anyone – even Henry – for his future throne.
Geoffrey (Early 30s) – a thinker; a conspirer; shrewd and clever; the middle brother who has grown-up as neither Henry's nor Eleanor's favorite.
John (Late 20s) – a spoiled brat in a man's body; he knows he is his father's favorite and uses it to his advantage whenever possible. He is unscrupulous but lacks the imagination and intelligence to be truly dangerous.
Philip of France (30s) – smart; cunning; vindictive; he is tired of sharing France with Henry and eager to prove himself a gamesman.
Alais – (20s to early 30s) – she is in love with Henry; a pawn at times for his games but strong enough to stand up to him and even to Eleanor.
Actors will be asked to cold read from the script. We will have scripts available.
Rehearsals will begin the last week of September. Performances in mid-November. Stipends available.
