Tucson: film screening with director Q&A - Chinese Cultural Center

From: trvene@gmail.com
Sent: Friday, November 04, 2011 2:05 PM
Subject: Re: [tucsonstage] Tucson film screening with director Q&A

In honor of National Adoption Month,
Tucson Chinese Cultural Center Red Thread Families (co-sponsored by UA Hanson Film Institute)
is pleased to present the screening of 3 independent Chinese adoption films,
with special presentation and Q&A by filmmaker, Dr. Changfu Chang.

Dr. Chang is the writer/director/producer of Sofia 's Journey and Daughters' Return,
as well as co-director for The Invisible Red Thread.

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Location: Tucson Chinese Cultural Center 1288 W. River Rd.
Cost: TCCC Members $10, Non-Members $20
RSVP: 292-6900
www.tucsonchinese.org

4:30 p.m. The Invisible Red Thread (Approx. Running Time: 50 minutes) 15 year old Vivian Lum returns to her birth land to discover the life she might have had if she'd not been internationally adopted.

6 p.m. Sofia's Journey (Approx. Running Time: 45 minutes) Searching for Birth Parents (Series 1)

She is a lead singer of her school choir and an accomplished dancer. She often wonders where her talent comes from. Are her singing and dancing inherited traits? Her lack of knowledge of her birth parents has left her with an emotional void, a "hole in her heart."

This film documents the gripping journey of a 14-year old girl as she searches for her birth parents in China. Ultimately, the quest becomes the search for her past, identity, and place in complex relationships entwined with love and abandonment. Standing at the very spot where she was allegedly found 14 years ago, Sofia is anxious for answers to the unsettled questions: Will the myth of her birth be solved, will her birth parents come forward to reclaim her as their daughter, and, will the journey bring a closure to a chapter in her life?

Sofia's Journey is not just a suspense-filled, emotion-laden story but also an exploration of minds, choices, and cultural differences.

7:15 p.m. Daughters' Return (Approx. Running Time: 50 minutes) Searching for Birth Parents (Series 2)

Since the early 1990s, over 100,000 Chinese children, mostly girls, have been adopted by families in the West. Other than a few lines about their finding places, these children know nothing about their biological families. For many adoptees who are coming of age, the lack of information on their birth parents creates a sense of disappointment and frustration.

This film documents the unique experiences of two girls—Eline from the Netherlands and Ricki from the United States—who go to China to meet their birth parents and reconnect with their roots. For the Chinese children adopted internationally, their experiences remain extremely unusual. How do the adoptees find their birth parents? How do they bond with their birth families? How do they negotiate their identities based on new narratives of their past? What do these experiences mean to the adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive parents?

Daughter's Return is a rollercoaster, packed with unexpected turns of events, outpourings of emotion, and a timely engagement of critical issues concerning adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents.

Tucson: SOUTHERN ARIZONA SYMPHONY - Chinese Guzheng Concerto, Stravinsky's Firebird

SOUTHERN ARIZONA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Contact: Tim Secomb at 626-4513 or secomb@u.arizona.edu

Nov. 19 & 20

Eclectic SASO Concert Features Gershwin,

Guzheng Concerto, Stravinsky's Firebird

TUCSON, AZ – Eclectic and exotic certainly describe the Nov. 19 and 20 program of the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra.

Gershwin's Cuban Overture. A Chinese guzheng concerto. And birds – lots of birds. Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, The Dove and The Cuckoo from Respighi's The Birds, plus avian photographs by world-traveled photographer Irving Olson.

Chances are very good you've never heard He Zhanhao's "Lu You & Tang Wan" Concerto for Guzheng with Orchestra, Chorus and Soprano. SASO presents this work blending Chinese and Western influences with guzheng soloist Larry Leung, the Tucson Sino Choir and soprano Marcia Fest. Zhanhao co-composed The Butterfly Lovers violin concerto that SASO performed previously. The guzheng is a many-stringed Chinese instrument akin to a zither.

Leung, who lives in Tucson, said he was blessed with the desire learn and play music. He taught himself much. Then five years ago, with lessons and guidance from Master Li Ma, he decided to learn to play the guzheng, which also rekindled interest in his Chinese roots. This will be his first performance with a symphony orchestra and choir.

Founded in 2007, the Tucson Sino Choir is directed by Larry Lang. Soprano Fest is one of the choir's founders. In high school she was selected to attend the Gansui Province Opera Troupe, where for three years she received her performing arts training. She attended Lanzhou University, then worked at both Lanzhou University and Shenzhen University. She came the United States for graduate studies and ultimately moved to Tucson.

Music Director Linus Lerner will conduct. Lerner, who completed his doctorate in orchestral conducting at the University of Arizona, also serves as artistic director of the Bayou City Performing Arts in Houston. He has conducted orchestras, operas, choruses and instrumental groups in his native Brazil, the United States, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Spain, Mexico and China.

The SASO concerts will be presented Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the SaddleBrooke Desert View Performing Arts Center, 39900 S. Clubhouse Drive, and again on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 7575 N. Paseo del Norte.

Individual tickets are on sale now. Order SaddleBrooke tickets online at http://tickets.saddlebrooketwo.com or call 825-2818. Individual tickets at SaddleBrooke are $21 in advance, $23 at the door. Order the St. Andrew's tickets online at www.sasomusic.org or call 308-6226. Individual tickets at St. Andrew's are $20 in advance or at the door. They are complimentary for ages 17 and under.

The SASO season continues with three more concerts and a gala fundraiser:

Ø  SASO's annual fund-raising gala will be held Jan. 28, 2012 at the MountainView Country Club in SaddleBrooke, including dining, entertainment and both live and silent auctions. For information visit www.sasomusic.org or call 308-6226.

Ø  On Feb. 11 and 12 guest conductor Tao Fan returns to the SASO podium with his sister, pianist Cong Fan, performing the challenging Yellow River Piano Concerto by Yin and Chu.  Also on the program: Liu and Mao's Yao Dance Overture and Brahms' Symphony No. 2 in D Major.

Ø  On April 14 and 15 whimsy is in the air with Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals and a multi-media show. The program also features the innovative HarpFusion ensemble, along with music of Copland, Handel, Sibelius and a performance by the winner of SASO's annual youth concerto competition.

Ø  The season concludes May 19 and 20 with a rare concerto for two double basses by Bottesini, performed by Waldir Bertipaglia and Catalin Rotaru. The program opens with Isaac's Patriotic Overture and ends with Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 in D minor.

Founded in 1979, SASO is a vital community resource that unites performers and audiences through a passion for music. The orchestra presents world premieres, seldom-performed treasures and classical favorites. The orchestra has toured in China, giving six performances in five cities, including Beijing. For more information, visit www.sasomusic.org or call 308-6226.

UA’s Studio Series presents Short Attention Span Theatre by UA Theatre Students, directed by Laura Lippman, Adjunct Instructor for the School of Theatre, Film & Television

Using the format of the Chicago Neo-Futurists – meaning actors play themselves and topics will cover a wide range of varying genres and tones – students will engage their audience with up to 30 short plays in just one hour. The show is designed as an homage to the famous Neo-Futurists of Chicago, whose signature show, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, serves as the students’ performance model. For this production, the theme of secrets is the common thread among all the plays.

For each performance of Short Attention Span Theatre, the audience will choose the order of the plays at random. The cast has NO IDEA how each performance will turn out. Actors will only have 60 minutes to perform all of them. If they succeed in performing all plays within an hour, the actors are treated to delicious pizza and the audience feels good about themselves. However, if the actors fail to complete all 30 plays within the allotted hour, the audience gets to eat delicious pizza – and the actors go hungry – but they’re going to try to finish all the plays because, well, they need to eat.

(Adult themes and profanity).

Short Attention Span Theatre contains adult themes and harsh language, and is intended for mature audiences. If you are upset or offended by any of the following things: drug references, lawyers, profanity, passive-aggressive waiters, free form expressions of modern dance, violence, mockery and/or self-loathing, flashing lights, dangerous weaponry, dangerous liaisons, issues of race and religion, loud noises, soft noises, homosexual references, or heterosexual references, then Short Attention Span Theatre is not for you. Go home and watch TV. It's much safer in your living room.

Fuddy Meers is an American play by David Lindsay-Abaire. It tells the story of an amnesiac, Claire, who awakens each morning as a blank slate on which her husband and teenage son must imprint the facts of her life. One morning Claire is abducted by a limping, lisping man who claims her husband wants to kill her. The audience views the ensuing mayhem through the kaleidoscope of Claire's world. The play culminates in a cacophony of revelations, proving that everything is not what it appears to be.

The play's title "Fuddy Meers" is Gertie's attempt to pronounce the phrase "funny mirrors".

Tickets are $12 pre sale online and $15 at the door. (PLUS TAX).
