The Theater Camp that pays YOU!

Borderlands Theater is now accepting applications to participate in our first ever Community Artist School summer theatre camp!

This innovative camp engages youth with arts education in theater making alongside comprehensive training in civic practice and applied theater. In response to the disproportionate effects of COVID-19 on the mental health of communities of color, Borderlands Theater will commission 8 youth, with stipends of $1200 each, to create an original play exploring the state of mental health among Tucson families. Participants work alongside experienced theatre instructors, a behavioral health counselor, and in partnership with the TUSD Department of Mexican American Student Services. Camp sessions include development of core theatre skills alongside research, conducting interviews, and the development of an original play. Community Artist School ensemble members tour the play to 8 schools throughout the 2023-2024 school year, receiving $100 per performance.

Is the Community Artist School Theatre Camp right for me?

·    Are you between the ages of 13-17 and would love to spend your time this summer creating a play to perform with your peers?

·    Are you interested in learning about careers in theater and how you can support and market yourself as a community artist?

·    Do you want to give back to your community through creative theater making?

·    Are you interested in removing the stigma around mental health and starting a dialogue among other teens and their families about how to access mental health resources?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then this might be the summer option for you!

When and where is the camp taking place?

Our full-day summer camp runs June 12-July 28 on Mondays-Fridays 9:00AM-4:00PM. The camp will take place at El Pueblo Neighborhood Center, 101 W. Irvington Road (across from the rodeo grounds).

Is theatre experience required?

You may consider yourself to have lots of theater experience already or maybe this is all new to you! We welcome any youth between the ages of 13 – 17 to apply. This summer we will have spots for 8 students – 7 student actors (no experience needed) and 1 stage manager (some experience is preferred).
