About the Play
It is the 1880s. Electricity has just arrived, and with it — wonder. Dr. Givings is a devoted, well-meaning physician who has embraced a remarkable new medical device. His patients leave his office feeling considerably better than when they arrived. His wife Catherine, meanwhile, listens from the next room — and begins to wonder what exactly is going on in there.
What follows is one of the funniest, most surprising, and most genuinely touching plays of the past twenty years. Sarah Ruhl — one of America's most celebrated playwrights — takes a deliciously provocative premise and turns it into something luminous: a play about intimacy, marriage, desire, and the very human longing to truly connect with another person. It is witty and warm, poetic and playful, and by the end, unexpectedly moving.
This is a play about what we yearn for most — and how rarely we ask for it.
Cast & Creative Team
This Tony-nominated, Pulitzer Prize finalist play is not one to miss. The production features a stellar Tucson cast including Hannah Turner, Josh Parra, Allison Akmajian, Sean Patrick, Kat Basso, Taylor Rascher, and Tanisha Ray, with scenic design by Todd and Silken Poelstra, costumes by Maryann Trombino, lighting by James Blair, and sound by Rob Boone.
Charles Isherwood praised the play in his New York Times review as insightful, fresh, and funny — noting that it is richly observant in both thought and feeling.
