A Valentine for Tucson Theater Audiences

Winding Road Theater Ensemble announces the second production of its inaugural season: Frankie & Johnny in the Clair de Lune by Terrence McNally, which will take place at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Tucson, Arizona. A sexy, humorous play about fearlessly—and fearfully—falling in love, the play will be performed by a real-life married couple Amy Erbe and Terry Erbe. Winding Road Theater Ensemble chose this play specifically for the Valentine’s Day season. "To my mind, this play is a true romance and is our Valentine to Tucson audiences," says director Lesley Abrams.

Originally produced Off-Broadway in 1987, Frankie & Johnny in the Clair de Lune enjoyed a Broadway revival in 2002. The film version, written by Terrence McNally and released in 1991, focused more on the dramatic elements of the play. Director Lesley Abrams says, "I felt the film version was too poignant, too serious. I read the play as a classic romantic comedy; a comic duet of sorts between a risk-taker and a risk-avoider complete with a soundtrack of beautiful, sentimental music."

Frankie & Johnny in the Clair de Lune* previews on Thursday, February 11, opens Friday February 12, with evening performances on February 13, 19, 20, 26 and 27, and Sunday matinees on February 14, 21 and 28. All evening shows are at 7:30 p.m.; matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $18, with group, student, senior, preview and theater artist discounts available for $15. There is also a special Valentine’s Day offer of two tickets for $20. Reservations can be made by calling 520-882-5502. No credit card sales are available, cash and check only. Position Summary The School of Theatre Arts seeks an Assistant Professor to direct and teach acting in a highly active professionally focused BFA actor training program. The successful candidate will be part of the Division of Acting and Musical Theatre as one of 7 full time teaching faculty and will direct two productions per year. This is a Tenure Eligible position.

Duties and Responsibilities Direct two productions per year. At least one show will be a main-stage production for the Arizona Repertory Theatre, the School's Professional Training Program.

Teach undergraduate acting and directing courses as assigned.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications Not applicable for this position.

Additional Minimum Qualifications * MFA or Ph.D.

* Previous professional directing experience.

* Two years of university teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications * Membership in SSDC, AFTRA, SAG or AEA.

* Experience in film and/or television performance and/or directing.

* Strong foundation in process-oriented, Stanislavsk- based actor training.

* Interest in directing Musical Theatre productions.

Arizona Onstage Productions presents a new vision of Hansel and Gretel – told with fantastical words, music and images of Appalachian folklore to create a haunting, classically flavored musical.

The two abandoned youths are welcomed by witch/priestess Mamba and her clan of ghosts, both the mythical and those based on American history, including Ivy, a Salem witch burned at the stake, Silas, a Confederate Soldier shot in the stomach, Little Wing, a Native American whose family, starving after Europeans came, left him to die and Mazy, a black slave who was abused by her Master and Mistress. These are joined by White Fawn, a talking/singing deer and various ghosts/hoodoos from Appalachian folklore, including the Bell Witch, Wampas Cat, Stephen Bishop, Martin Stone and several others straight out of the Tennessee/Kentucky Great Smoky Mountains' legends and oral history.

This 90-minute production features a cast over 20 performers, life-size puppets and orchestra. During its sold-out New York City run, LOST received unanimously glowing reviews:

Script Breakdown

This is the foundation course for learning the important building blocks to great performance. You’ll learn how to break down the script, how to analyze the character, how to play him/her, and most importantly how to mark the script in order to give a really great audition. Throughout the course, you’ll have two or three auditions, and you’ll be given lots of information and insightful advice about how to handle the important few minutes before each audition. This course is not just about auditioning - it’s also a great acting class.

An old man listening to his life spool past on reel-to-reel tapes, a mouth unable to stop speaking or grasp reality, a clown struggling against an unseen benefactor (or tormentor) in the desert. These scenarios represent three of Samuel Beckett's most haunting and fascinating one-act plays. Both lyrical and jarring, Beckett's works offer us the chance to step away from time and the outside world, and to experience the poetry of the human condition in all its rugged glory. Holding his mirror up to the most minute and mundane of situations, Samuel Beckett allows a whole world of possibility to spring to life. From the seed of a moment comes deep insight and understanding. This evening of one-acts offers three unique journeys into the poetic and ironic world of one of Ireland's greatest writers.

In 1953, Samuel Beckett turned the theatre world on its head when his masterpiece, Waiting for Godot, first appeared onstage. Unlike anything that had gone before, Beckett offered up an evening with four fascinating characters caught in a moment of time who, instead of expounding on their lives and history, merely existed in the present moment. Beckett's subsequent works gave the world a wonderful variety of oddball characters, each stuck (sometimes literally) in a time or place, each struggling with the reality of everyday existence turned upside down.

Director David Morden notes that, "The power of Beckett is that he doesn't tell us stories in any conventional way. We experience his characters and their dilemmas in a manner that is so different from almost any other theatre piece. It is thrilling to listen to his words as they enter our ears from a new direction and stimulate us in unfamiliar ways. Beckett is not so much about logic and reason as he is about music and sensation."

Krapp's Last Tape, Not I and Act Without Words preview on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 7:30 P.M. Opening Night is on Friday, February 26, 2010. Regular performances of Krapp's Last Tape, Not I and Act Without Words continue on Saturday, February 27 through Sunday, March 14, 2010. Curtain times are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 P.M. and Sundays at 2:00 P.M. Tickets are $24 and can be purchased online at TheRogueTheatre.org or by calling our box office at 520-551-2053. Cynthia Meier (Mouth/Not I) is the Managing and Associate Artistic Director for The Rogue Theatre for which she has performed in Our Town, A Delicate Balance, Immortal Longings, Six Characters in Search of an Author, Red Noses, The Goat (Best Actress, Arizona Daily Star 2008 Mac Award), The Maids, Endymion and The Balcony. For The Rogue, she adapted and directed James Joyce's The Dead, and directed Animal Farm, Orlando, Happy Days, The Good Woman of Setzuan, The Fever and The Cherry Orchard. A co-founder of Bloodhut Productions, Cynthia has also performed in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Arizona Repertory Theatre), A Streetcar Named Desire (Arizona Theatre Company), Blithe Spirit and A Midsummer Night's Dream (Michigan Repertory Theatre), Romeo & Juliet and Chicago Milagro (Borderlands Theater), A Namib Spring (1999 National Play Award winner), and Smirnova's Birthday, The Midnight Caller, and The Ballad of the Sad Cafe (Tucson Art Theatre). Joseph McGrath (Krapp/Krapp's Last Tape) is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Drama and the Artistic Director for The Rogue Theatre. For The Rogue, he has performed in The Fever, The Dead, Endymion, The Good Woman of Setzuan, The Cherry Orchard, The Goat, Happy Days (which he recently reprised in Bangalore, India), Red Noses, Six Characters in Search of an Author, Orlando, Animal Farm and A Delicate Balance (winner of the Arizona Daily Star 2009 Mac Award for Best Actor) and has directed The Balcony, Endymion, The Maids, Red Noses, Immortal Longings (which he also authored) and Our Town. Joe has toured with John Houseman's Acting Company and performed with the Utah Shakespearean Festival. In Tucson, he is a frequent performer with Ballet Tucson appearing in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Cinderella, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Dracula and The Nutcracker. He has also performed with Arizona Theatre Company, Arizona Opera, Tucson Art Theatre, Arizona OnStage, Green Thursday, Damesrocket Theatre, and Old Pueblo Playwrights in such plays as The Seagull, Assassins, Oleanna, The Threepenny Opera, and Anger Box. Joe is also a scenic designer and owns Sonora Theatre Works with his wife Regina Gagliano, producing theatrical scenery and draperies.
Patty Gallagher (Player/Act Without Words) is Associate Professor of Theatre Arts at University of California Santa Cruz where she directs courses in physical theatre, mask, Balinese dance, and clown traditions. She is Director in Residence for the Clown Conservatory, San Francisco School of Circus Arts. She holds a doctorate in Theatre from University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has performed clown and buffoon with Teatro Cronopio and studied in Laboratorio Grupo Malayerba. She has worked with the New Pickle Circus, Fool Time Circus, Folger Shakespeare Theatre, Ripe Time, San Francisco Circus and the Weird Sisters Ensemble. She has performed and directed workshops in Asia, South America, Europe, and the U.S., and was a Fulbright Scholar in Quito, Ecuador. With The Rogue Theatre, she has performed the roles of Shen Te in The Good Woman of Setzuan, Ranevskaya in The Cherry Orchard, Winnie in Happy Days (which she recently reprised in Bangalore, India), Sonnerie and Scarron in Red Noses, and Orlando in Orlando. Most recently, Patty delighted San Francisco audiences with Winnie in Happy Days and Quince in A Midsummer Night's Dream, both at California Shakespeare Festival.

Harlan Hokin (Musical Director) has performed extensively as a singer in Europe and the United States, including a stint with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He earned a doctorate in historical performance practice from Stanford, and has taught at Stanford and UC Santa Cruz. Harlan is an active workshop teacher and writer on topics of interest to singers and early music performers. Recent theatrical involvement has been with The Rogue Theatre as Musical Director for Our Town, A Delicate Balance, Animal Farm, Immortal Longings, Orlando, Six Characters in Search of an Author, Red Noses, The Goat, The Cherry Orchard, The Good Woman of Setzuan, The Maids, Endymion, The Dead and The Balcony, and Arizona Onstage Productions as Vocal Director for their production of Assassins. Harlan has also served as music director for Arizona Theatre Company's Summer On Stage program. He is currently serving as Artistic Director for the Arizona Early Music Society and is the father of two nearly perfect children.

Nic Adams (Stage Manager) has appeared with The Rogue Theatre in Orlando and Six Characters in Search of an Author and with the Now Theatre in This Property is Condemned and Cigarettes & Chocolate, both 'Rogue After Curfew' productions. Multi-Award winning Arizona Onstage Productions presents the Tucson Regional premiere of William Finn's hit Broadway musical comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. All but three slots are full for this Saturday, February 6th. We are adding slots the following Sunday, February 14th, starting at 2pm. Central Speedway/Alvernon location for auditons. The show will be presented at The Historic Temple of Music and Art. Please note that this professional production has no ties or relations to the upcoming U of A production, and is produced with full authorization from Music Theatre International. SPIC-O-RAMA is a one-man show written by John Leguizamo. It will feature Alejandro Samaniego performing all 6 characters of a Colombian-Puerto Rican family from Queens, NY. The performance will be coached by Philip Bennett. Meet the family:

-little Miggy, 9 years old and the youngest of the 4 boys presenting his science project to his school class, "Monsters, Freaks, and Weirdos," a project "based loosely on my family, and any similarities are just purely on purpose," he says.

-Krazy Willie, a Desert Storm veteran looking for ways to feel better about himself, while trying to convince his fiancé to actually show up at their wedding.

-Rafael, a flamboyant and "occasional heterosexual with a slight hint of masculinity." Rafael is an actor who firmly believes he is Lawrence Olivier's long lost love child and is on a quest to reunite himself with his "daddy."

-Javier, the brother who is the outsider in the family, takes center stage in his wheelchair. He reveals the heartbreaking truth about his feelings for the family.

-Gladyz, the mother. We see her trying to keep her family together as she smokes and eats chicken at the same time and calls it "smoked chicken."

-the father Felix makes his entrance at Krazy Willie's wedding by offering his toast to the newlyweds. This awkward, funny, and ultimately tragic speech ends with him flirting with his son's new bride.

Alternately hilarious and poignant, candid and intelligent, SPIC-O-RAMA is a must-see. It won the 1992 Dramatists' Guild Hull-Warriner Award for Best American Play, 1992 Lucille Lortel Outstanding Achievement Award for Best Broadway Performance, and 1992 Drama Desk Award for Best Solo Performance. It also aired on HBO, receiving four CableACE Awards.

Comedy Improvisation - What a wonderful class to get you to think fast, think on your feet, loosen up your body, and how you move. In this class, you're also taught dialects. You don't have to be a "funny person" to do really well in this class, to have a fantastic time, and to learn a great deal. Comedy improv isn’t half as hard as it looks when you learn it from a former Saturday Night Live cast member. Anna gives you the keys: formats, dialects, and structure. Come play, have a ball, and enjoy discovering how funny you can be. Also, for acting students, studying comedy improv loosens up the body, helps you think fast on your feet, introduces dialects, and sharpens your timing.

4 consecutive Wednesday nights
6:30pm-8:30pm
Start on any Wednesday (but you must call first to sign up).
$35 per week

WAYPOINT THEATRE COMPANY, southern Arizona's only faith-based live theatre organization, is accepting resumes and scheduling auditions to immediately fill a principle male role in the upcoming children's production, BARTHOLOMEW'S READING ADVENTURE by Dr. Gillette Elvgren, Jr. for the Tucson Festival of Books,
Mar. 13 & 14 on the University of Arizona campus.

Seeking: male, 18-50s for role of the dynamic and energetic Dr. Suess.

Play synopsis: Bart's mom is frustrated with his lack of interest in reading. She tries everything. In desperation, she takes Bart to see a doctor—Dr. Seuss, who succeeds in motivating Bart to read a story. But if Bartholomew wants to find out what the ending is, he has to jump into the book and become a part of the story.
This award-winning, multi-produced production does not use Seuss stories, but does re-create much of the rhyming and high energy wacky humor that typifies Seuss' stories. Through audience participation, Bartholomew learns about the various parts of the story, how they happen, and ultimately appreciates the written word.
