George Bernard Shaw’s

Candida

Will Open June 10th

George Bernard Shaw’s Candida will open at The Comedy Playhouse on June 10th.  Written in 1896 and published in 1898 as part of his Plays Pleasant, Candida is one of Shaw’s earlier plays.  Candida was also one of Shaw’s personal favorites. Candida tells the story of the Reverend James Morell, one of the finest public speakers in London, and his wife Candida.  Candida has just returned from a month in the country with their two children.  She has also brought back with her a friend of the family, the young poet Eugene Marchbanks.  Before the end of the play, Candida is forced to make a choice that will alter the rest of her life.

As in all of Shaw’s plays, Candida provides Shaw an opportunity to observe and comment on an aspect of the human experience.  In Candida, Shaw turns his attention to the subject of marriage and what constitutes a successful union between a husband and a wife.  Of course, Shaw’s views are surprising and unique.  Candida stars Drew Kallen as Morell, Cristin Phibbs as Candida and Colin Roberts as Marchbanks.  Also on hand to provide comic support are Paul Hammack, Tina Swope and Frank Solis.

Candida will run from June 10 to July 10 (dark July 1, 2, 3) Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm   Admission is $18.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.

The Comedy Playhouse is located at 3620 N. 1st Avenue at the northeast corner of 1st Avenue and Prince Road.  The Comedy Playhouse has lit, adjacent parking.  Candida is appropriate for all ages.
