Media Alert

For Immediate Release—04 May 2011

STORIES OF LOCAL ELEMENTARY STUDENT AUTHORS SOAR TO LIFE TUCSON—Please join the hungry, story-eating Magic Box as it presents the annual “Best of Stories that Soar!” extravaganza! This fun-filled, family-friendly, literacy and performing arts event will take place on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre on the UA Campus. Because of the overwhelming participation of Southern Arizona’s youth, this year’s event will feature two totally different shows--the “Four-O’Clock” and the “Six-O’Clock”--sandwiching the “Red Carpet Reception” that features original songs (with lyrics written by elementary authors), crazy contests, raffles, book displays, free refreshments, face painting, and VIP treatment for authors!

The Magic Box spends most of the year gobbling stories at local schools, libraries, or other community locations. Each time it is stuffed full, it returns to Story Headquarters where professional adult performers from the Stories that Soar! ensemble read each story and adapt some for the stage. Then, they take the performance back to the authors who watch their stories soar to life! This year 5,566 authors fed the Magic Box 6,814 stories. That’s a new record for participation! Big thanks to Anna Lawrence Intermediate School’s 231 students for writing 1,349 of the stories! Over the year, the Stories that Soar! ensemble created 14 original shows featuring 265 stories. Although the Magic Box loves them all, time only allows for some of them to be shared at the “Best of STS!” celebration. Which stories will be featured? Are wedding bells in store for the Magic Box? Will Super Plumber save the day? Knowing the Magic Box, there are sure to be some thrills and chills too!

Tickets are available at Antigone Books and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle’s Toys at $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. Parking for Stevie Eller Theatre is free at the Cherry Street Garage on the UA Campus. The Magic Box and Stories that Soar! are a part of SharMoore Children’s Productions, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to empowering children to believe in themselves by giving voice to their original words and creative ideas.
