Job Description
Technical Director is responsible for the safe and successful technical execution of all live events for the Fox Tucson Theatre. The Technical Director will handle all technical aspects of the “advance” of upcoming shows, as well as manage all technical aspects of theatre facilities, including event load-ins, set-ups, strikes, and use of the facility’s sound, lighting, stage and other technical equipment and systems. The TD ensures that all technical aspects of the production work smoothly and safely.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of theatre equipment, including but not limited to lighting systems, digital & analog sound systems, automated rigging systems, digital cinema/video equipment (experience with 35mm film projection would be helpful as well).
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction.
  • Advises on capital equipment upgrade projects.
  • In consultation with Executive Director, monitors and allocates backstage and technical budgets.
  • Ability to read, interpret and implement stage plots, light plots and building schematics.
  • In consultation with end users (renters etc.) creates day of show schedule for all technical areas including staffing, rehearsals and load in and out times.
  • Effectively communicates all pertinent technical information to all end users and Fox Theatre staff.
  • Organize, schedule, manage, and train stagehands (from Rhino Staging, or other sources), including tracking crew work hours.
  • Act as primary venue point of contact for all technical matters on day of show from load in until load out is completed.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and legal codes for local, state, OSHA, and other federal guidelines is required.
  • Coordinate and advance performances and events, ensuring all technical and logistical needs are properly attended to.
  • Reads and interprets technical riders in order to make timely budgetary decisions based on technical labor and equipment requirements for incoming shows.
  • Interact with facility users (including renters, co-promoters, etc.) in the planning, coordination and execution of programs, services and events.
  • Supervise the rigging and strike of theatrical lighting, sound and overall stage set up for a variety of productions and events including nationally renowned musical acts, touring and local theatrical productions, and other presentations and productions.
  • Develop, implement and monitor policies to ensure safe work practices and environment in the backstage and stage areas.
  • Conduct periodic inspections and inventory of facilities, equipment and supplies.
  • Build and maintain effective & proactive working relationships with local vendors and production companies.
  • Other responsibilities as requested, as part of a positive and productive team pursuing the best for those we serve.

Requirements and Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include: a degree of two years or more from a higher education institution (or an equivalent in specialized equipment training plus high school diploma), along with significant (5+ years or more) professional experience in technical production of the performing arts. The TD must be able to work safely around power tools, on ladders and lifts, and around electricity. Hands-on work with various crews may be required. The TD must be physically fit enough to spend most of the day on his/her feet, and able to lift 40 pounds or more. CTS certification (Certified Technology Specialist) is a plus but is not required.
Some supervisory/managerial experience is preferred. The successful candidate will have excellent people skills, along with professionalism, courtesy, leadership, and the ability to problem-solve creatively. Other desirable traits include an even-temper and being a team player. Full-time, immediate hire, this position will require working long and irregular hours, evenings, and weekends.
