Reveille Bids Farewell to Shawn Cullen
Artistic Director for Southern Arizona GALA Choruses

Reveille Men's Chorus congratulates Artistic Director/Conductor Mr. Shawn Cullen on his accepted Ph.D. fellowship at the Conservatory of Music and Dance at The University of Missouri-Kansas City. He will begin doctoral studies within an interdisciplinary teaching fellowship in Music Education and Curriculum and Instruction starting in the Fall 2017 academic semester. A national search for the next Artistic Director of both Reveille Men's Chorus and Desert Voices Chorus will commence immediately, with the goal to announce the new appointment in July.

Reveille Men's Chorus and Desert Voices Chorus maintain a consistently strong position administratively and financially, with a continued broad base of community support.  The organizations are working in tandem and positioned to attract artistic talent to lead the organizations to the next chapters of excellence and success.

Shawn joined the Reveille Men's Chorus staff in 2009. During his 8-year tenure, the Chorus has grown dramatically in terms of members/ singers, audience, and local and national recognition. More than 60 singers now perform in a concert cycle to consistently packed houses changing venues to both the Temple of Music and Art and the Leo Rich Theater for needed space drawing some of the largest audiences for choral programming in Southern Arizona. Under Shawn's leadership, Reveille has earned a reputation for musically excellent, entertaining, relevant programming with humor and heart. This includes productions with thematic presentations from classical choral repertoire, Broadway, music written for and by the LGBTQ community, original stories of LGTBQ history and members' personal stories of the coming out process. Through these moving concerts that entertain and educate, Shawn has enabled the Chorus to achieve its mission: Changing Lives Through Music. During the past 8 years Shawn has conducted the chorus at two quadrennial GALA (Gay and Lesbian Association) Chorus festivals and travelled internationally to perform with the Puerto Vallarta Gay Men's Chorus. Mr. Cullen also led Reveille to make their debut performance with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra in 2013 for "Broadway Rocks!" as the first LGBTQ chorus to perform with a professional symphony orchestra in the state of Arizona. In January 2017 Shawn was appointed to the GALA Choruses national board of directors for a 3-year term.

Shawn's artistic vision will continue for both Reveille and Desert Voices as their seasons come to an end this summer. Shawn's final concerts with Reveille Men's Chorus will take place on May 13th and 14th for "What's Love Got To Do (got to do with it)" at the Temple of Music and Art. Shawn's final concert with Desert Voices will take place on June 11th along side multiple invited GALA Choruses from the Arizona region for the 2nd annual "Celebrating the Spectrum" concert, also at the Temple of Music and Art.

Mr. Cullen has also served the Tucson community as an award-winning music educator and leader for Tucson Unified School District for the past 12 years, adjunct faculty member in University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music as director of the Pride of Arizona Pep Band (2009-2013) and served as conductor of 9 productions with the Arizona Repertory Theater in the UA School of Theater, Film and Television. Shawn is a proud Arizona Wildcat earning both his Bachelor's of Music Education and Masters of Music in conducting at the University of Arizona.

The Reveille and Desert Voices families extend heart felt, sincere thanks to Shawn, along with congratulations and best wishes
to him on his next endeavor in Kansas City.
