We are so grateful for our Unscrewed Theater friends and family!

As of this morning, we've raised just under $5,000 for the theater -- and we had a BLAST at the special show on Tuesday.

So, a HUGE thank you to everyone out there who's supported us this last year in so many ways! We're thankful to still be here, ready to give you a smile (or laugh!) when you need it.

We are so, SO lucky to be part of this community.

It's been quite the year.
And we're still here.
Bringing funny to your home.
So you're never alone.

At least on Saturday night.

So power up your internet-connected devices and join us for another fun weekend of laughter - and a month of new learning opportunities.

Happy Friday, y'all! Time to celebrate the close of another week...and the rise of the weekend.

And there's no better way to celebrate than with some laughter and fun with our improv community around the world!

First time? Get ready to develop that Friday habit!

Dawn's guest this week is none other than John Gebretatose!  John joins us from the Twin Cities, where he's got more than a decade of comedy experience under his belt.

John (he/him/his) rose from the ranks of HUGE Theater students to become an improv instructor. He trained and worked at Brave New Workshop and has performed stand-up comedy in the Twin Cities for over eleven years. He is a co-founder of renowned Twin Cities improv troupe Blackout Improv and a founding member of Late Nights Minneapolis With Joe Rapp.

Over the past few years, John has become a leading light in efforts to change the face of American improv, making it even more welcoming and representative of the communities around it. He has lead and facilitated diversity and inclusion programming for improv theaters all over the world with a mission of uplifting all voices.

John has taught improv workshops internationally, coached improv groups, and currently teaches at HUGE in addition to heading up diversity and inclusion programs. He is the co-founder of the Black and Funny Improv Festival as well as the Twin Cities chapter of Our Cities on Our Stages.

Saturday, 4/10

9:30pm (MST/PDT)
UNCENSORED Improv Comedy

Unscripted.
Unexpected.
Uncensored!

Come for the ribald humor. Stay for the belly laughs.

Tonight's totally uncensored show features special guest Megan Sherrod, who is joining us from Austin, TX!

Megan is an improviser, teacher, and director. On stage, critics have called her "charming" and said her performances have a "vulnerability [that] is manifest and moving."

She is a member of the award-winning musical improv ensemble Rook and a regular on the Hideout Theatre stage, which specializes in narrative improv. She's performed and taught across the United States and internationally.

When improvising, Megan enjoys connecting with audiences through the creation of varied characters – from playful and silly to grounded and vulnerable and everything in between.

Outside of improv, Megan is a professional singer, voice teacher, theatre producer, and dog mom.

Megan is ready to make stuff up with David, Kate, Jon, Cy - & your host, Rob Sparks!

Starting April 30

Back by Popular Demand!
Liz Allen Workshops
Fridays, 6-9pm (MST/PDT)

Last October, Liz Allen was one of the first coaches to jump into our online Unscrewed Theater Virtual Training Center.

Those classes sold out within a week.

And she's back!

And you can tap into her expertise from ANYWHERE starting Friday, April 30.

Liz Allen brings a lifetime of improv experience to our Unscrewed Theater workshops. She has performed, coached, directed and written about improv for over 28 years.  All the while, winning award after award and teaching hundreds of workshops.

She has performed and coached across the country – at iO Chicago, Neo-Futurarium, The Second City at the Flamingo Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, and The Improv Shop in St. Louis.  Liz was honored to coach The Commune, the improv ensemble in Mike Birbiglia's 2016 feature film Don't Think Twice.

For three years running, she won the Del Close Coach of the Year Award, now called the Liz Allen Excellence in Teaching Award.  She also co-wrote the book Improvising Better with Jimmy Carrane in 2006.

These days you can find her teaching improv online, and we are honored (and EXCITED!) to offer her workshops.

The Guts of Form

Friday, April 30. 6-9pm MST

What is a long-form, really, and why do we do it? Liz will share her opinions about this. Understanding the guts of form helps improvisers feel confident knowing when and how to initiate transitions, pattern-fulfillments, edits, callbacks, and new ideas, while inside a form. Understanding the guts of form avoids common freak-outs, such as "we're failing up here, oh, god, what should I do?" which often leads to forced misguided moves that grind the form to a halt.

This workshop covers Liz's views and tips towards understanding how to navigate long-forms so that each experience is a fulfilling expression of group voice.

The State of Second Beats

Friday, May 7. 6-9pm MST

It's time for second beats, and there are endless options. Now what? Liz will share her opinion about this. Second beats are the unsung workhorses of long-form. They are a platform for patterns, solidifying tone, and expanding characters. But usually, they 'just happen' and are under-utilized. Frequently, they're boring linear repeats of the first beats, mired in plot, or tangents that bear no resemblance to the first beats. But, when second beats focus on character and non-plot aspects of the first beats, then a fulfilling long-form is underway.

In this workshop, Liz shares her techniques on how to approach second beats and their influence on form.

Cavalcade of Characters

Friday, May 14. 6-9pm MST

You've created these characters, now what do you do with them? Liz will share her opinions about this. Improvisers often get bogged down in characters as long-forms progress. Some characters are over-used, and some are forgotten, and this can be frustrating. Most forms don't pause for players to get their bearings, so the cavalcade of characters has to be captured and maximized while staying in the moment. This is a challenging aspect of improvising.

In this workshop, Liz offers tools for keeping track of, managing, and connecting characters inside a long-form.
