She's here with Dawn this week practicing her skills as an improviser and is ready to show how improv is something that EVERYONE can have fun with.

Dawn & Athira will perform a quick ten minute scene - and then hang out to chat about improv...and whatever else they feel like discussing. Join them for some fun, lightness - and some connection with other people out there in the world.

Family-Friendly Improv Comedy

We had so much fun last week with Free Range Comedy that a few of them decided they wanted to come back!

Tonight's special guest is a former Unscrewed Theater performer, and a current Free Range Comedy performer - it's Vicki McGee!

Vicki McGee has been doing comedy improv for decades! She cut her baby teeth at the L.A. Connection, has performed at the Comedy Store, and wound up in Arizona performing with Unscrewed Theater before landing on Maui and hatching Free Range Comedy. She and her husband, Bill Hubbard, relocated to Ventura County, CA where they opened Free Range Comedy SoCal where Vicki serves as Artistic Director, Lead Educator, and Chief Whip-cracker!

Vicki is back on our stage to play with Chris, Jon, Cy, Allana, Rosanne - & your host, Rob Sparks!

Come and laugh along with us from wherever you are, and end your Saturday night with a smile!

Open Mic Improv Night

Note: Even though the time is early, this show may contain adult language and scenes.

It's the last Sunday of the month - that means it's time for the Sunday SmashUp!

Once a month, we host an open mic night for improv teams around the world. Each team performs a short scene - and then we mix 'em all up!

This month's teams include:
~ Almost Reddy
~ Parks & Wreck
~ T.B.N.
~ Where Y'at?
~ Wild Hip Bootz

In the SmashUp scene, improvisers perform a scene with a partner from ANY of our performers, chosen at random. They'll get to test their skills and make up a scene with someone totally new - all live!

She has performed and coached across the country – at iO Chicago, Neo-Futurarium, The Second City at the Flamingo Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, and The Improv Shop in St. Louis.  Liz was honored to coach The Commune, the improv ensemble in Mike Birbiglia's 2016 feature film Don't Think Twice.

For three years running, she won the Del Close Coach of the Year Award, now called the Liz Allen Excellence in Teaching Award.  She also co-wrote the book Improvising Better with Jimmy Carrane in 2006.

And you can tap into her expertise from ANYWHERE starting Friday, April 30.

BUT there's limited space available, and spots are selling out fast!

Read more about the course options, and register to join us below! Liz will teach you how REALLY use your characters, how to lean in to long form, and the art of the second beat. All skills that are perfect for anyone who's looking to hone their skills - while having a lot of fun!

The Guts of Form

Friday, April 30. 6-9pm MST

What is a long-form, really, and why do we do it? Liz will share her opinions about this. Understanding the guts of form helps improvisers feel confident knowing when and how to initiate transitions, pattern-fulfillments, edits, callbacks, and new ideas, while inside a form. Understanding the guts of form avoids common freak-outs, such as "we're failing up here, oh, god, what should I do?" which often leads to forced misguided moves that grind the form to a halt.

This workshop covers Liz's views and tips towards understanding how to navigate long-forms so that each experience is a fulfilling expression of group voice.

The State of Second Beats

Friday, May 7. 6-9pm MST

It's time for second beats, and there are endless options. Now what? Liz will share her opinion about this. Second beats are the unsung workhorses of long-form. They are a platform for patterns, solidifying tone, and expanding characters. But usually, they 'just happen' and are under-utilized. Frequently, they're boring linear repeats of the first beats, mired in plot, or tangents that bear no resemblance to the first beats. But, when second beats focus on character and non-plot aspects of the first beats, then a fulfilling long-form is underway.

In this workshop, Liz shares her techniques on how to approach second beats and their influence on form.

Cavalcade of Characters

Friday, May 14. 6-9pm MST

You've created these characters, now what do you do with them? Liz will share her opinions about this. Improvisers often get bogged down in characters as long-forms progress. Some characters are over-used, and some are forgotten, and this can be frustrating. Most forms don't pause for players to get their bearings, so the cavalcade of characters has to be captured and maximized while staying in the moment. This is a challenging aspect of improvising.

In this workshop, Liz offers tools for keeping track of, managing, and connecting characters inside a long-form.
