HALF AND HALF is a beautifully constructed new comedy which explores marriages past and present in two related one-act plays. In the first act, set at a breakfast in 1970, the breadwinner husband reads the newspaper and the homemaker wife fries the eggs. In act two, at breakfast 35 years later, the career-minded wife reads the paper and the stay-at-home husband cooks the frittata. With his unique comic insight, Sherman looks at how husbands and wives accept and reject their roles, how their roles have changed and, how their roles just might be changing back. ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
JAMES SHERMAN is the author of the plays MAGIC TIME, THE GOD OF ISAAC, MR. 80%, THE ESCAPE ARTIST, BEAU JEST, THIS OLD MAN CAME ROLLING HOME, JEST A SECOND!, ROMANCE IN D, FROM DOOR TO DOOR, THE OLD MAN’S FRIEND, AFFLUENZA!, HALF AND HALF, RELATIVELY CLOSE, and JACOB AND JACK. James was a theatre student at Illinois State University in the early 1970s. He began his professional career as a writer and performer with The Second City in Chicago and received an M.F.A. degree from Brandeis University. Since 1986, he has been a Playwright-in-Residence at the Tony Award-winning Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago, and he is proud to be a member of the Victory Gardens Playwrights Ensemble. In the summer of 2006, James directed his own screenplay of his play BEAU JEST, starring Lainie Kazan, Seymour Cassel, and Robyn Cohen. James currently teaches Playwriting and Improvisation at Columbia College of Chicago and DePaul University. He has been a teacher of Playwriting and Acting on the faculties of The Second City Training Center, Chicago Dramatists Workshop, and Victory Gardens Theater. He was a visiting professor for the spring '01 semester in Seoul, South Korea, at the Korean National University of the Arts. He has led workshops in Improvisation at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. He has been the recipient of fellowships from The MacDowell Colony, the Ragdale Foundation, The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Yaddo. He is a member of The Dramatists Guild of America.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES
KRISTI LOERA - Susan / Lucy - has been acting in Tucson for 17 years and was last seen performing on the mainstage in SEASON’S GREETINGS!!! (2010 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award Nomination for Best Actress, Comedy). She is the Executive Director of Live Theatre Workshop, where she has appeared in the mainstage in productions of WIFE BEGINS AT FORTY, PICNIC, THE UNEXPECTED GUEST, THE HOUSEKEEPER, LEMON SKY, DESIGN FOR MURDER, DANCING AT LUGHNASA, PRIVATE LIVES, THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO, CHAPTER TWO, CAUGHT IN THE NET, DEARLY DEPARTED, I HATE HAMLET, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, DEATHTRAP, SYLVIA, RUN FOR YOUR WIFE, BABY WITH THE BATHWATER and THE HEIDI CHRONICLES, to name a few. Kristi also recently directed the mainstage production of TAKING STEPS, the Etcetera production of MR. MARMALADE and the All Together Theatre production of RAPUNZEL. Notable roles with Etcetera include Liz (THE BOOK OF LIZ), Mother (THE EATING DISORDER TALENT SHOW), Sharla (KILLER JOE) and Agnes (BUG).
Paul Matlock - Production Stage Manager - has served on the technical crew for many mainstage and late-night productions at LTW, including TAKING STEPS, DON’T DRESS FOR DINNER, PICNIC, SAVAGE IN LIMBO and HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH, to name a few. Earlier this season Paul performed with Winding Road Theatre Ensemble in their productions of THE LION IN WINTER (John) and FIFTH OF JULY (Weston) as well as in the staged reading of RAG AND BONE (T-Bone) for Etcetera.
Shannon Rzucidlo - Young Lucy / Katie - is a native Tucsonan. She studied theatre arts at the University of Arizona and has performed both locally and internationally. Most recently she has appeared in the premiere of STEPHEN’S SYNDROME at the BATC Page on the Stage festival. Other performing credits include: Stories that Soar, THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, ANYTHING GOES, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, and THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA. She has worked as a teaching artist at Lexington Children’s Theatre and serves as the Assistant Education and Outreach Coordinator at UApresents. This fall she will begin an internship at Arizona Theatre Company and will appear in ROUGH CROSSING at Beowulf Alley.
Missie Scheffman - Direction - is excited to be directing her third mainstage production at LTW after helming the company’s first musical I DO! I DO! and last summer’s A THOUSAND CLOWNS. Missie is also an actress at LTW where you may have caught her in THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG, SPIDER’S WEB, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST and THE MISS FIRECRACKER CONTEST, to name a few. She has a BFA from the University of Arizona in Theater.
Rick Shipman - Stewart / Jeremy - has been acting for 14 years and recently moved to Tucson from Phoenix. Since coming to Tucson Rick has appeared in many local performances, most recently in LTW’s mainstage productions of THE DINNER PARTY, DON’T DRESS FOR DINNER and A THOUSAND CLOWNS. He has also been seen in Tucson with Arizona Repetory Theatre in RUM AND COKE and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, with The Rogue Theatre in THE GOAT and RED NOSES, as Greg in Studio Connections’ SYLVIA and as Tom in Beowulf Alley’s DINNER WITH FRIENDS.
Emilio Zweig - Assistant Stage Manager - is happy to be backstage for his second production with the mainstage at Live Theatre Workshop after recently working on TAKING STEPS. You may have previously caught him performing in the late-night Etcetera productions of THE BOOK OF LIZ and KIMBERLY AKIMBO, with Borderlands Theatre in THE PASTORELA or with Winding Road Theatre Ensemble in ARMOR.
