Early Spring Term

March 2 through April 12, 2026

 

The TheatreLab offers: Active Analysis through Physical Actions. The Lab is a safe, intimate and supportive environment for honest exploration and artistic growth. A place for the serious novice and professional alike.

Classes include:  Meditation, Psychophysical Conditioning Exercises, Voice and Speech, Dramatic Improvisation, Scene Study, Active Text Analysis through Physical Actions, Shakespeare and the Classics, Public Performance Scene Nights

 

Class Schedule

Foundation Technique

Saturday  12:00–2:45  Starts March 7th  —  6 Weeks

Introduction to the Stanislavsky System of Psychophysical Action. First steps to Building a Character through Improvisational techniques.

Classical Acting

Sunday  6:00–8:45  Starts March 8th  —  6 Weeks

A workshop based on the vocal and physical exercises as practiced by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Emphasis on Shakespeare and includes work on Greek drama and other major classical texts.

In-Depth and Advanced Character Exploration

Monday  6:00–8:45  Starts March 2nd  —  Audit Only (FULL)

Emphasis on Contemporary texts. Requires ability to Improvise Actions for Text Analysis. Foundation Technique is a prerequisite or its equivalent.

About the Director

Philip G. Bennett, Founder and Artistic Director, is internationally recognized as a master teacher of the Stanislavsky System of Acting with 56 years of experience. He holds a BA in Humanities and a graduate Certificate of Mastery from the renowned American Stanislavsky Theatre in New York, where he served as actor, teacher and Assistant Artistic Director to Sonia Moore, émigré actress/director from the Third Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre. Bennett founded the San Francisco Theatre Academy, with film affiliates in the Bay Area and Hollywood. He is a recipient of the prestigious Hollywood DramaLogue Award for Best Direction and Debut of a New Company. Graduate students appear regularly in film and television and are accepted in conservatories and repertory companies in the US and the UK. Mr. Bennett’s textbook, co-written with Prof. Stephanie Daventry French, Experiencing Stanislavsky Today, is published by Routledge Academic Publishers, London and New York.
