August 2011

Get Ready for
"An Evening of A. A. Milne"
 Opens July 29

On Friday, July 29th "An Evening of A. A. Milne" will open at The Comedy Playhouse.  "An Evening of A. A Milne" will consist of three of his one-act plays, "The Camberly Triangle," "The Boy Came Home," and "Wurzel-Flummery." Last August, The Comedy Playhouse presented Milne's "The Dover Road." The play was so well received by the audience and the actors enjoyed presenting it so much that I decided to bring Milne's works back again this summer.

All of the evening plays are full of surprises.  You'll never guess how they turn out.  Here's the story for each.

"The Camberly Triangle"

Kate Camberly's husband Dennis went off to war three years ago.  She hadn't heard a word from him in many months.  She presumed him dead, and went on with her life.  She's met a new man, who has asked her to marry him.  Now, she's received a letter from her husband informing her that he's on his way home.   What is she to do?

"The Boy Came Home"

Phillip has just returned from four years at the front.  His uncle James wants him to come in to the family business, but Phillip has other ideas.  Or does he?

"Wurzel-Flummery"

Conservative Member of Parliament, Robert Crawshaw has just received a most unusual letter.  A man, unknown to him has died and left him 50,000 on the condition that he changes his name to Wurzel-Flummery.  Well,

50,000 is 50.000, but, Wurzel-Flummery???

Join Jon Benda, Denise Blum, Paul Hammack, Sean O'Connell, David Gunther, Cristin Phibbs, Jacob Waters, Brenna Summers and Bruce Bieszki as they present these clever, cheerful works of A A. Milne.

"An Evening of A. A. Milne" will run from July 29th to August 28th. Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 and Sunday afternoon at 3:00.

Admission to "An Evening of A, A. Milne" is $18.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.  The Comedy Playhouse is located at 3620 N. 1st Avenue at the northeast corner of the intersection of 1st Avenue and Prince Road.  The Comedy Playhouse has lit, adjacent parking.  "An Evening of A. A. Milne" is appropriate for ages eight and up.

"The Comedy Genius of

O. Henry"

Opens September 2

"The Comedy Genius of O. Henry" will open at The Comedy Playhouse on Friday September 29th. The will be the third in the very successful "The Comedy Genius of…" series William Sydney Porter was born in 1862 in North Carolina.  In his early years he tried his hand at several careers such as pharmacist, draftsman, bank teller and journalist. In 1887, he married Athol Estes.  His daughter, Margaret, was born in 1889.  In 1895, while working as a bank teller, he was accused of embezzlement.  He fled the country but returned to stand trial in 1898.  He was found guilty and sentenced to five years in jail.  It was during his time in jail that he began to write under the pen name O. Henry.  Since he was a convict, he couldn't use his real name and expect to have his stories published.  He was released from jail after serving two years.

From then on, he supported himself and his family by writing his famous short stories.  Although the public adored him, critics at the time were cool to his work.  Readers were pleased by his "O. Henry endings," but the critics found them contrived.

Time has changed the critical view of him.  His narrations are clever and witty, his stories are humorous and his endings never fail to surprise. His work is perfect fare for "The Comedy Genius of…"series.

"The Comedy Genius of O. Henry" will run for only 5 performances from September 2nd to September 10th. Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 and Sunday afternoon at 3:00 (only one matinee).   Admission is only $12.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.

"The Comedy Genius of" series is becoming popular.  I had to turn people away for the last two performances.  Don't get left out of the fun.  Make your reservations early!
