WINDING ROAD PRESENTS AARON POSNER'S "STUPID F#!*ING BIRD"

Irreverent Reimagining of Chekhov's "The Seagull" Opens February 1, 2019

Tucson, AZ, JANUARY 11, 2019 – Winding Road Theater Ensemble will open the second main stage play of its 2018-2019 season, "Stupid Fucking Bird" by Aaron Posner, on Friday, February 1, 2019. A reception will follow the opening night performance.

Stupid Fucking Bird is a contemporary adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull that takes a satirical spin on a theatrical classic, but brings out the essence of Chekhov's overall message about what it means to create art.

About this production

"Aaron Posner has updated The Seagull not only for modern audiences, but with modern characters, while retaining Chekhov's signature slice-of-life presentation," says director Maria Caprile, who also serves as Winding Road's Co-Artistic Director. "Who would Con, the temperamental young Russian artist, be if he were an American living today? Would Nina be a fragile bird or an opportunistic scavenger? This production combines hilarity, tragedy, and on-stage musical highlights performed by the cast, all of which makes this production a real treat for actors and also for audiences, regardless of whether or not they are familiar with Chekhov and his works."

The cast includes local performers Jodi Ajanovic, Tony Caprile, Liz-Claire Feliciano, Tyler Gastelum, Samantha Severson, Richard Thompson, and China Young.

About the play

Stupid Fucking Bird premiered in 2013 at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, DC, followed by additional productions at The Arden Theatre Company in 2014, The San Francisco Playhouse in 2015, and Off-Broadway at the Pearl Theatre in 2016.

Among its many positive reviews, The Economist published: "The script is new and crackling, at once incisive, poignant and darkly funny. Like the original, it affords plenty of opportunities to chuckle with recognition. And like the original, it delivers an ending that is destined to make its audience weep." (August 9, 2014)
