taught by Radomir Pashev for local dance students

The directing board of the Tucson Dance Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the dance education and performing arts experience of young Tucson artists, is pleased to announce that it will underwrite a Ballroom Master Workshop to be taught Saturday, August 7th by renowned international ballroom professional competitor and instructor Radomir Pashev.  The workshops, one for ages 8-11 at 10-11:30am and another for ages  12-17 at 11:30am-1:00pm, will introduce young dancers who’ve been studying ballet, tap and jazz to a discipline that’s been rapidly increasing in popularity thanks to wildly popular dance shows like ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” and FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance.”  Tucson Dance Academy will provide the location for the workshop at its studios at 4241 W. Ina Rd. and all qualified Tucson area dancers ages 8-17 will be invited to attend.  We ask that dancers have completed at least 2 years of dance instruction, said Tucson Dance Academy director Tammy Booth, adding that, “of course, placement will also be based on availability.”  An exception will be made for interested male students who may not have prior dance experience.  Interested students may call (520) 744-6882 to register.

Radomir Pashev and his partner Devorah Kastner are professional ballroom dance instructors and competitors, who currently teach in the Phoenix area.  In addition to instructing, they compete professionally all over the US in the 9-dance category of ballroom, which includes Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, Cha-Cha-Cha,Rumba, Swing, Bolero, and Mambo. In 2008, they became the U.S. National Vice Champions. “Ballroom Dancing is no longer reserved for your grandparents” says Mr. Pashev, “It’s become so widely accepted in this country and it’s exciting to see the hunger that young people have to learn the classic dances.”  Growing up in Bulgaria, a willing young student is exactly what Radomir was NOT.  Selected for his physical lines at the age of 7 in a communist country, Radomir spent several miserable years, against his will, training to become a ballroom dancer.  His attitude took a radical change, however, once he entered into puberty and realized that all that time with female partners had given him the edge over other boys.  In contrast, partner Devorah, a native Arizonan, began her ballroom dance career at the relatively late age of 17. Recently, Mr. Pashev has been in the process of bringing another ballroom late bloomer to the national stage, Tucson Dance Academy instructor Carly Booth.

Ms. Booth, a third generation member of a family of dancers and dance teacher, distinguished herself at the age of seventeen as an Elite Gold Division ballroom dancer. In 2009, she won a world title, placing third in the World Youth Pro/Am International Latin Championship held in Ohio, and just recently placed first in the Pro/Am national competition in Chicago.  Carly credits Mr. Pashev for her success, “Radomir is really experienced and knows how to connect with his students, he’s also very patient and has a good sense of humor.”  He always seems to know how to challenge and bring out the best in me.  Of his young protégé’s future in ballroom, Mr. Pashev says, “she is an incredibly talented and focused student--for Carly, the sky is the limit!”

Like her teacher, Carly Booth is passionate about sharing her love of ballroom with young people.  She and her mother, Tucson Dance Academy director Tammy Booth, are initiating a ballroom program this summer.   Beginning Ballroom classes will be taught for dancers in 2 age groups: 8-11 and 12-17.  Starting July 9th, the 4 wk class held on consecutive Fridays will cover the basics of 3 of the 5 international Latin Dances: Cha-Cha,Samba and Rumba.

Note:  Tucson Dance Academy’s Summer Schedule begins July 5th with a wide variety of classes for beginner to advanced.  See www.tucsondanceacademy.com for details.
