BORDERLANDS THEATER TO PRESENT ITS 2001-11 SEASON : ¨THE SEASON OF THE SHAKING BORDERLANDS.¨ 25 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE AND RISK-TAKING IN BORDER THEATER!
Welcome to our 25th Anniversary Season. We are proud to present new plays by Southwestern and border voices, along with a family Tucson tradition, and the best of Latino/Chicano theater! This year our productions will team up with community partners to create "production events" with the Screening Room, Raices Taller 222 Gallery, The University of Arizona College of Humanities and Derechos Humanos.

In this riveting play -based on actual interviews by Anna Ochoa O’Leary- four women trek the desert towards the American dream. On their way they push the limits of their physical and emotional endurance, and they establish profound yet fragile connections with each other through the magical storytelling of the youngest of them, an indigenous woman from Chiapas.

Join the shepherds, dog and sheep in their perilous march onto Belen to witness the birth of the Baby Jesus. As they pass through the wilds of Arizona they will encounter scary (but whacky) racial- profiling Devils who will snare them with all kinds of gadgets and “laws”, and glorious Archangels who will save them at the last minute with flaming swords and beautiful songs. Sweet Christmas carols sung in English and Spanish accompanied by Gertie and the T.O. Boyz Waila Band! Pinatas for the little ones in every show!

A Chicano recast of Sophocles’masterpiece by McArthur Foundation Fellow Luis Alfaro. “Oedipus”is set in a California prison and the Pico Union neighborhood in Los Angeles. In Alfaro’s reimagining of the Greek tragedy, Oedipus, who’s been raised in a prison, is carried by “el destino” to an unavoidable appointment down California’s dusty Highway 99 and later into a lonely widow’s bed. Poetic, brutal, and raw, OEDIPUS EL REY is an electrifying and unforgettable myth for the modern age!

SLUMBER OF REASON
By the Latina Dance Project. A new dance drama based on ”Los Caprichos” by Spanish painter Francisco de Goya. Enigmatic and controversial “Los Caprichos” summarized the economic and political crisis of 18th century Europe. Using humor, song, dance, text and video LDP recasts these powerful images to create a new set of modern day “caprichos” exploring our contemporary demons.

Would you sacrifice your family for a political career? In this high stakes drama set in Tucson and Phoenix, two Latino brothers- one blond and fair skinned, and the other darker, - have each other but not much else in common. The one brother, an attorney and politician, attempts to make a place both for his ideals and his ambitions as he is threatened by his brother’s past history. In the process he is confronted by tough decisions about loyalty to his brother and the status of his career he has worked so hard to achieve.
