A Pair of Plays

By J. M. Barrie

Continues Through March 4th

A Pair of Plays by J. M. Barrie continues at The Comedy Playhouse through March 4thA Pair of Plays by J. M. Barrie consists of The Old Lady Shows Her Medals and A Well Remembered Voice.  Written during World War I, these heart-warming comedies depict ordinary people filling the void in their lives that had been caused by The Great War.

James Mathew Barrie (1860-1937) is best remembered today as the author of Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't  Grow Up.  The character of Peter Pan first appeared in Barrie's 1902 novel Little White Bird or Adventures in Kensington Gardens.  The book was written for adults and was rather dark and foreboding.  Barrie took the story, lightened it and expanded it and created the play.  The play premiered in 1904 and was an immediate hit.  Barrie later took the characters and reworked the story again in his 1911 novel Peter and Wendy.

The Old Lady Shows Her Medals is the story of a lonely charwoman and her attempts to be part of the war effort.   Feeling left out and alone, she invents a fictitious son in order to gain standing among her friends.  What's she to do when "her son" appears at her door?

A Well Remembered Voice shows a husband and wife dealing with the loss of their son. The wife has turned to spiritualism, while the husband denies his feelings of affection for his son.  Suddenly, a well remembered voice reminds a father of his love for his son.
