Subject: Special Event: INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATION OF COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE DAY AT ROGUE THEATRE & UA

TUCSON TO PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL THEATRICAL CELEBRATION OF COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE DAY TUCSON—Matt Walley and Angela Horchem of Illegitimate Theatre Ensemble are bringing Commedia dell’Arte Day to The Rogue Theatre and the UA School of Theatre, Film, & Television on February 25th, the “birthday” of Commedia dell'Arte and of professional theatre. On February 25, 1545, a troupe of comic actors in Padua, Italy signed legal documents to become the first incorporated theatre company. The documents, drawn up by a local notary, are the oldest extant documentation of actors conceiving of their work as a legitimate industry. Commedia dell’Arte—which translates as Theatre of the Professional—was born, and it began to spread through public squares, royal courts, and theatres all over Europe.

Matt and Angela—also responsible for organizing the national celebration of the play It Can’t Happen Here at The Rogue Theatre earlier this season—are adding Tucson to this international celebration of Commedia dell’Arte. Matt is directing a performance featuring UA faculty and students alongside local professional actors and musicians, all wearing masks made by Angela and playing music directed by Paul Amiel. The performances will take place at 12:00 PM at the Alumni Plaza on the mall at UA, and again at 2:00 PM at The Rogue Theatre. Admission is free, but a $5 donation is suggested. A musical parade will precede each performance, so please come early to enjoy the festivities! After each performance, volunteers will gather signatures to petition the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) to recognize Commedia dell'Arte as an official piece of "Intangible Cultural Heritage.”

The annual Commedia dell'Arte Day is celebrated every February 25th and supported by the Italian Commission of UNESCO and the Italian Center of International Theatre Institute (ITI). It was conceived to promote knowledge of this global theatrical language—which is still performed today throughout the world—and to prove the existence of an international community that recognizes itself as a part of this tradition. Commedia dell’Arte Day is organized by SAT, a cultural association made up of Commedia dell’Arte professionals, and Faction of Fools, a Commedia dell’Arte Theatre Company based in Washington, D.C.

The first annual Commedia dell’Arte Day took place in 2010, with events centered in Bologna, Italy. Over sixty international events occurred on all six inhabited continents and in over twenty world languages. This year’s events are centered in Malaga, and an ever-growing list of participating locations across the globe is updated regularly at Commedia dell’Arte Day’s official website, www.commediadellarteday.org/eventi.
