ANNOUNCING

OUR 2012-2013 SEASON

Great literature.

Intimate setting.

Journey to the West

by Mary Zimmerman

September 6 - 23, 2012

A Chinese epic from the 16th century brought to life by the acclaimed Mary Zimmerman: the monk Tripitaka's 17-year journey to India to receive scrolls of wisdom from the Buddha.  He is accompanied on this odyssey by the immortals Monkey, Pig, and a reformed cannibal as they experience episodes of hardship and enlightenment.  A great and canonical work of the East rendered in a fanciful yet profound style.

The Night Heron

by Jez Butterworth

November 1 - 18, 2012

The sighting of a rare bird has brought attention to the remote fens of England where two middle-aged men, recently unemployed and being blackmailed for a horrible secret, struggle to survive in a broken cabin.  One of them, Wattmore, is recreating an iconostasis, a vast painting of saints, which dominates the stage as both men, their lodger, and those they are running from all seek their own kind of salvation.  A black comedy that owes a great deal to Harold Pinter.

Mother Courage

by Bertolt Brecht

January 10 - 27, 2012

What many regard as Brecht's masterpiece, Mother Courage profiteers from a constant state of war, as she loses her children to it one by one.  Her cynical manipulation of the miseries of others robs her of her title, and at the play's end, she is mother to no one.  Written in a burst of energy after the invasion of Poland, it is one of our principle ruminations on the nature of war.

Kafka's Monkey and Metamorphosis

by Franz Kafka

Kafka's Monkey adapted by Colin Teevan; Metamorphosis adapted by Cynthia Meier

February 28 - March 17, 2013

Two parables about the modern world. In Kafka's Monkey, a chimpanzee reveals to us what it is to be human.  In Metamorphosis, a young man awakes to discover that he has become an enormous insect and struggles to adjust to his new existence.

Richard III

by William Shakespeare

April 25 - May 12, 2013

Shakespeare's most charming monster manipulates and murders his way to the throne of England, seducing the audience as he ensnares his victims.  In

Richard III, mortal fear finds its place in politics.  While Richard's deformities encase a hideous heart, the play's language is among the most graceful in the Shakespearean canon.
