SAWC Presents "Wine, Women & Song" Fundraiser March 3

TUCSON, AZ – "Wine, Women and Song" is the joyful annual fundraiser of the Southern Arizona Women's Chorus. The March 3 event features wine tastings by Total Wine, gourmet hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction, a raffle with the potential of a $10,000 win and an array of songs from members of the 90-voice chorus.

The chorus is known for its eclectic and versatile repertoire that spans from classical music to Broadway, folk, jazz, spiritual, seasonal and other popular songs. SAWC presents two ticketed concerts each year, plus numerous sing-out performances at festivals, events, schools and senior communities throughout Southern Arizona. The chorus has entertained the metro area for nearly 30 years.

Last year this event raised more than $8,000 to help the chorus collaborate with local and national artists, commission new works for women's voices, provide scholarships and present workshops for schools, other community choral groups and the public. Terrie Ashbaugh has directed the women's chorus since 1998, including its Carnegie Hall debut.

Wine, Women and Song will be presented Saturday, March 3, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Tucson Osteopathic Medical Foundation at 3182 N. Swan Rd. (on the southeast corner of Swan and Camp Lowell).

The fundraiser features a 200-ticket raffle where the winner splits the raffle proceeds with the chorus – a take-home prize of $10,000 if all raffle tickets are sold. Raffle tickets are $100 each.

Tickets to the wine-tasting event are $35 each in advance, or $40 at the door. A discounted package includes admission for two and one raffle ticket for $150. Call 404-3148 for more information or to purchase tickets.

SAWC's upcoming spring concert is called "Earth, Sea, Sky," with selections of songs of the elements. The selections include works that sound like underwater, songs of the earth like "Tundra" and adventures on the seashore.

The program also includes two premieres. The chorus commissioned new compositions for women's chorus and steel drum, collaborating with Jovert – A Steel Drum Band from Tucson High School.

The concert will be presented Friday, Apr. 20 at 7 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1220 W. Magee Rd. (just east of La Canada) and on Sunday, Apr. 22 at 3 p.m. at Catalina Foothills High School, 4300 E. Sunrise Dr.

Ashbaugh is a co-founder of the Women in Song Festival for Women's Choruses, whose inaugural festival was in April of 2010 in Seattle with choirs from Arizona, Washington, Alaska and Canada attending. This festival will be offered again in April of 2013 here in Tucson.

She also is Director of Music at Ascension Lutheran Church and School. For 10 years Ashbaugh served as director of the University of Arizona Faculty/Staff Choir. She also composes and arranges music.

SAWC began in 1981 as a project for a UA graduate student and grew into the Foothills Women's Chorus, directed by the late Terry Howell. The chorus incorporated in 1985 and changed its name to Southern Arizona Women's Chorus in 2006. SAWC performs an ever-expanding repertoire written specifically for women's or treble voices.
