ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE
In her newest work, I Am, five-time Tony Award-nominated choreographer Camille A. Brown explores Black joy and dreams up new futures, opening up creative possibilities for how we can all live and be in the world. Drawing on the world of Lovecraft Country and rooted in the social dances of the African Diaspora, this electrifying evening blends athletic precision with cultural storytelling. With her company of fearless dancers and live music, Brown creates movement that feels joyful and unstoppable.
Known for blending powerful storytelling with dynamic movement, Brown’s work taps into ancestral and contemporary stories to capture deeply personal experiences and cultural narratives of African American identity. She made history in 2022 as the first Black woman to direct and choreograph a Broadway play since Katherine Dunham in 1955, with the revival of for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf. Within the same season, she became the first Black artist at The Metropolitan Opera to direct a mainstage production.
