Step into the hilariously dysfunctional world of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Christopher Durang's Tony Award-winning comedy that's equal parts cheeky, chaotic, and deeply heartfelt. In a quiet Pennsylvania farmhouse, Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia lead a dull, humdrum existence—until their glamorous, larger-than-life movie star sister Masha storms in with her boy toy Spike in tow.

Add a soothsaying housekeeper and a neighborhood ingeˊnue to the mix, and what follows is a wild ride of sibling rivalries, fading dreams, and over-the-top antics. Will Masha sell the family home? Will Spike keep his shirt on? Will Sonia ever find true happiness—or at least a date?

Come for the biting wit, stay for the absurd Chekhovian twists, and leave with a grin on your face. Drama, comedy, and a touch of existential dread. This play has it all.

About the Play

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike received the Tony Award for Best Play in 2013. Written by Christopher Durang, the play is an affectionate riff on the plays of Anton Chekhov—borrowing character names, themes of stagnation and longing, and the structure of a country-house drama—while spinning them through a thoroughly contemporary, absurdist comic sensibility. The result is a play that is simultaneously a loving homage and a wickedly funny send-up: Chekhovian in its ache, Durangian in its anarchy.

At its heart, the play asks quietly piercing questions about regret, the passage of time, the lives we didn't live, and whether it's too late to change. The comedy never smothers the feeling—it makes room for it.
