2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama   •   April 23 – May 3, 2026   •   Black Box Theatre, Pima West Campus

About the Production

Fairview begins as a warmly comic family drama: Beverly is obsessively preparing a birthday dinner for her mother, her husband is being sent on errands, and her sister can't be bothered to help. The Frasiers are an upper-middle-class Black family and everything about their household radiates aspirational normalcy. Then, with precision and mounting dread, the play turns.

In Act Two, the family's scene replays in near-silence while four disembodied white voices are heard from offstage — revealed to be an audience watching the action — casually debating which race they'd choose to be if they could. In Act Three, those voices become bodies: white actors enter the stage and assume roles within the Black family's story, rewriting it as they go. The play ends with Keisha, the Frasiers' college-bound daughter, breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to the audience about who controls the stories we tell — and who gets to listen.

The Pima production is directed by Esther Almazán, with Tanisha Ray serving as Assistant Director and Dramaturg. It is performed in the intimate Black Box Theatre, making the play's dissection of surveillance and the white gaze all the more immediate.

"A hard-hitting drama that examines race in a highly conceptual, layered structure, ultimately bringing audiences into the actors' community to face deep-seated prejudices."

— The Pulitzer Prize Committee, 2019
