"GEORGIA McBRIDE" AT ATC IS VIGOROUSLY FILLED WITH LAUGHS, DISCO, GLITZ AND SOAP BUBBLES

by Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

The full cast in costume to present "The Legend of Georgia McBride."

First of all, “The Legend of Georgia McBride” by Matthew Lopez is a whole lot of hip-shaking fun with drag queens. But more than that, the Arizona Theatre Company's production directed by Meredith McDonough is an equally rambunctious and heartfelt celebration of life, especially family life – and a wonderful reminder that joyful humor has the power to unite us all.

For sure, it is impossible to be angry at anyone when you are laughing so hard. Also, “Georgia McBride” premiered in 2014 before gender issues became as politicized as they are today.

In the program notes, company artistic director Matt August writes “We at ATC recognize the vital importance of doing this play NOW, in the face of the anti-diversity and anti-drag sentiment that is sweeping the country.”

This particular music-filled journey of discovery begins in Panama City, a coastal town on the panhandle of Florida known in some circles as The Redneck Riviera. Casey (Kevin Kantor) definitely has a gritty low budget determination to survive no matter what. He's an Elvis impersonator at Cleo's Bar, and has the white jumpsuit to prove it.

But business isn't so good at Cleo's. Eddie (James Pickering) the club owner wants to pump up some excitement with a different act. His cousin Miss Tracy Mills (Courter Simmons) suggests a drag show. After all, she knows this business from the bottom up.

Only, there's no room here for Elvis. Then with his future already looking bleak, Casey discovers his wife Jo (Renea S. Brown) is pregnant. What's a poor boy to do? With a deep breath, Casey takes a stab at going drag. Miss Tracy is more than happy to teach him the ropes...or rather, the wigs!

“What state were you born in? What's the name of the first girl you kissed? That's your drag name,” commands Miss Tracy. Quicker than you can say “These tights are too tight,” the legend of Georgia McBride is born.

Their drag revue is an instant hit in Panama City. As the shows, the sets and the costumes get bigger and bigger, ATC keeps pulling out more stops, releasing more brakes, riding more insistent disco beats until, without ever looking back, leaps with a big plunge straight into all that glitz!

Backstage, Miss Tracy is also urging Casey to keep digging down inside himself, getting deeper in touch with his female side, feeling that surge of feminine power.

"The only limits are the limits of our imagination,” Miss Tracy keeps insisting.

Completing the cast are towering, broad shouldered and delicate Rexy (Armand Fields), along with ensemble members Marshall Glass and Max Murray.

The wildly fanciful costume designs by Patrick Holt and expansive scenic designs by Collette Pollard don't waste a drop of that imagination. Equally rich are the original music and sound design by Lindsay Jones, the original lighting design by Paul Toben; coupled with the adapted lighting design by Victoria Bain and David Shocket. Their extra effort deserves extra credit.

My favorite part was seeing how deftly Rexy can maneuver on roller skates. That and the swirling mirror balls combined with waves of wafting soap bubbles filling the stage in the grand finale that brought the hand-clapping audience to its feet.

"The Legend of Georgia McBride,” running approximately 100 minutes without intermission, continues through June 24 with 7:30 p.m. evening performances, 2 p.m. matinees, in the downtown Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. Tickets are $25-$85. For details and reservations, atc.org or phone 833-ATC-SEAT.

COVID protocol does not require masks but they are being encouraged.

EVERYTHING ON STAGE IS A LITTLE FASTER AND FARTHER OUT IN THE GASLIGHT'S "THE REVENGERS"

by Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

photo  copyright: Brian Gawne/The Gaslight Theatre

Janee Page flaunts her evil ways as the wicked sorceress Ruby Witch.

Make way for a whole brand new show at the Gaslight Theatre, written and directed by Katherine Byrnes and Mike Yarema to keep up with the times, becoming the first Gaslight production to include smart phones, computer messaging and references to TikTok.

The song list has a fresher flavor as well, as we meet “The Revengers,” a daring collection of super-powered heroes caught up in fanciful (and elaborately costumed) adventures across time and space, turning worm holes into galactic freeways stretching from the top of Mount Everest to the cold space of dying planet Zerox, where desperate times demand desperate actions.

Deep in this Interstellar Universe, reality makes its own rules, the action is zippy and plot lines zingy, often turning on the surprises of a single pun. To power the beating heart of digital intrigue in this race for supersonic survival is the indomitable multi-hued Energy Cube, for whoever holds The Cube holds the ultimate power.

And when the greatest scene stealer is a massive bright green and muscular, eternally angry character known as the Insatiable Bulk (David Orley), well, you know today's Hollywood influencers on the big screen are a long way from the Land of Oz.

Borrowing a bit from Norse mythology, the troubled brothers Thor, Lord of Thunder (Jake Chapman) and Loki, Monarch of Mischief (Todd Thompson) soon turn against each other, even though both are wearing battle helmets that flaunt equally menacing wings and horns.

Loki, raising the level of mendacity in his Mischief, tricks Thor into handing over the radiating Cube, thus endangering the very existence of Earth itself. Can Loki accelerate global warming and turn us all into cinders?

Loki is joined by a strikingly mysterious sorceress filled with evil body language to match her devious attitudes, the relentless Ruby Witch (Janee Page), whose sinister powers become quite convincing.

She is opposed by the intimidating Lady Steel (Heather Stricker), a female force for good, clad all in red, with muscle power to match.

Using his brains and brawn for bad deeds is Zanor (Yarema), the evil mastermind in black. We know he's the dude in charge because his helmet has more horns than anybody else.

Meanwhile, back on Terra Firma, in the highly advanced laboratory of renowned astrophysicist Dr. Erika Selving (Samantha Cormier) and her eager lab assistant Janey (Erin Thompson), more unexpected threats are lurking.

For the Gaslight's traditional olio add-on, the gang stays closer to home, turning to that family favorite TV show, “The Brady Bunch,” showcasing early 1970s fashion favorites such as bright orange shirts tucked into flowered pants – and that was just the boys!

As each Brady appeared on stage – Marcia, Jan, Cindy, Greg, Peter, Bobby, mom Carol and dad Mike, as well as Alice the housekeeper – it was like deja vu all over again.

Looking bouncy as ever, their song list included “Sunshine Day,” “I'm A Believer” and “Come On, Get Happy.” Some of the special guests stopping by were Davy Jones, the Partridge family and...my personal favorite...Kermit the frog singing “It Ain't Easy Being Green,”

“The Revengers” runs through August 27 with performances at various times Tuesdays through Sundays in the Gaslight Theatre, 7010 E. Broadway Blvd.

Tickets are $27 plus tax, with special discounts for groups, students, seniors, military, first responders, and children age 2-12. For details and reservations, 520-886-9428, or visit www.thegaslighttheatre.com

OLDEN TYMES FILL THE GASLIGHT STAGE IN THIS TIGHTLY STRUNG PRESENTATION OF "ROBIN HOOD"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

photo by Brian Gawne/ The Gaslight Theatre

True love links the iconic hearts of Robin Hood (Mike Yarema) and Maid Marian (Janee Page) amid the arboreal splendor of  Sherwood Forest when they sing "Rockin' Robin!"

When it comes to being a straight arrow, nobody does it better than Sir Robin of Locksley – more popularly known in recent centuries as Robin Hood.

Gaslight Theatre is here to remind us of the tales spread about this idealistic Englishman of Olde by presenting its own lively Gaslight stage version titled, “Robin Hood” or “It Sherwood Be Fun.”

Mike Yarema has the title role, strutting about with his Merry Men: Little John (Brian Hale) and Will Scarlett (Jacob Brown). Before the performance is over, they will be jousting on horseback, swinging from ropes, sword fighting the Sheriff of Nottingham (Todd Thompson), and chasing all manner of lords a-leaping, sometimes wearing sunglasses.

Meanwhile the dastardly Sheriff is joined by Sir Guy of Gisbourne (Jake Chapman), the sorceress Countess (Heather Stricker) and her assistant, Wormwood (David Orley) who is the nefarious provider of rare ingredients for her dark potions.

Together they oppose the noble Robin's cheery band by casting evil spells, predicting the future with the aid of a mystical black eight-ball and singing several songs that prominently include “evil” in the lyrics.

At the heart of this confounding conflict are a pair of defiant beauties: the humble peasant lass Fiona (Erin Thompson) and the irresistible maid herself, Maid Marian (Janee Page).

Whenever Robin and Maid Marian see each other, cheerful birds descend from the theater's overhead rigging to chirp cheerfully, just like they always did in those old Disney movies.

The Gaslight's traditional olio segment following the main show is particularly bright and shiny – a bell-bottom swaying, fanciful, fantastical multi-hued tribute to the Beatles and their sea of unbridled psychedelic joy.

Thoroughly researched in art styles and color combinations, the presentation begins with those four mop tops wearing Nehru-styled gray suits and acting all proper, right on through a 10-song program to the dazzling magical mystery tour, while their beloved yellow submarine keeps making appearances – first seen far away, then closer and closer until a very large portion of it is onstage with the resplendent lads themselves.

The Beatles are played by Yarema, Chapman, Thompson and Brown. Not to be outdone are the Gaslight's own Go-Go Girls – Page, Stricker and Thompson – in equally resplendent mini skirts and other fashions recalling that epic costumery of the 1960s.

Joyful choreography by Katherine Byrnes, mind-sweeping costume designs from Renee Cloutier, wrapped in lighting by David Darland and Michael Mueller, with spirited backdrops and stage designs by Tom Benson complete this vigorous journey of the heart. The co-directors are Byrnes and Yarema, with musical direction by Josh Lamoreaux.

“Robin Hood” and the Beatles olio continue through June 4, with performances Tuesdays through Sundays at the Gaslight Theatre, 7010 E. Broadway Blvd. Reservations are required. For complete details, visit www.thegaslighttheatre.com or phone 520-886-9428.

Dick Foster’s Broadway show is opening, but he’s having serious problems.  Stubborn leading ladies and minimal working capital are just a few of his headaches.  An aspiring young actress, Mary Collins, walks on the stage and could be the one to save the show, if only they had the money to put it on.  Meanwhile, ’Legs’ Ruby is on the run from the mob and brings with him a side-splitting array of characters.  Just as all appears lost for Dick and his dream show, an ’angel’ arises with the financial backing.  Mary gets her big chance at stardom, and the show goes on!  This play is filled with appealing character roles including delightful chorus girls and goofy gangsters.
