About FST!

FST! (Female StoryTellers) was founded in 2012 as a creative outlet for women to have a voice in Tucson. Each month FST! invites four or more women to write and perform personal stories based on a set prompt or theme. With each person's individual perspective on the theme, each FST! performance is uniquely unpredictable, often inspiring much laughter and the occasional tear from the audience. As passionate as FST! members are about storytelling, FST! also focuses on supporting the local community by raising funds for arts and community organizations.

"NAOMI AND MICHELLE'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE" IS

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Looking for more action are Amanda Valenzuela (L) as Michelle and Jennifer Ackerley Lawrence is Naomi at the Great American Playhouse.

Have you ever wondered what Franklin D. Roosevelt would look like rocking out in his wheel chair, a blanket on his lap, singing “It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight, risin’ up to the challenge of our rival!”

Well, wonder no more. You can see for yourself in the hale and hearty new show on the northwest side at the Great America Playhouse, “Naomi and Michelle’s Excellent Adventure.”

Taking audiences on a time traveling trip through history, writer/director Sean MacArthur stops by the White House in 1944 where the President (Nick Seivert) is riding herd on the war’s two most polarizing generals – Patton (Michael Claridge) and MacArthur (Sean MacArthur).

Staying within the melodrama spirit of music and comedy, MacArthur (the playwright) pays tribute to the war’s victors but also imagines a hilarious hissy fit between Patton and MacArthur (the general) that can only be described as an egomaniacal four-star cat fight.

As one character remarks onstage, “War is God’s way of teaching American’s geography.”

You gotta’ love it.  Going for a mix of mediums somewhere between “Saturday Night Live” and Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show,” GAP is staging some thoughtfully funny theater for the month of Independence Day.

In unobtrusive ways we are reminded how many of the problems our Forefathers faced in fighting for independence have come back around to us again.

Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams are in Philadelphia in 1776 singing about “Takin’ It To The Streets” while there are references to the Tea Party and Obamacare, reminding us without saying a word that our nation was born in revolution.

But we are still talking entertainment here, giving the heroes a big cheer and giving the villains a big boo, laughing at the dopey antics and exaggerated clueless observations of Naomi (Jennifer Ackerley Lawrence) and Michelle (Amanda Valenzuela).

Most of the roles are double cast, but at the performance I attended, Valenzuela was totally awesome, dude. Still in high school at Catalina Foothills, her dedication to this clownish role and the concentrated energy she poured into it were exceptional.

Lawrence was a good match, balancing Valenzuela move for move. But Lawrence is graduated from New York’s American Musical and Dramatic Academy. These two could take their act on the road any time.

In any melodrama, you can’t have great heroes without great villains. Jacinda Rose Swinehart comes out to do all the heavy lifting in the show’s full run as the angry cheerleader Arianna.

Her sidekick and general punching bag is hapless Todd (Brian Paradis), always game but rarely a winner.

Ridiculous high school cheers are always good for a laugh, but this time Arianna turns the short-burst cheer into a long-form chant that builds up steam like a locomotive – ending with the capper “It’s our duty to kick your booty!”

As for the plot, well you know that one. It’s drawn from the 1989 film starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.”  There is a pink telephone booth that becomes the time machine taking Naomi and Michelle to various pivotal moments in history.

The two girls are best pals and most excellent volleyball players who must pass their history class if they are to be academically eligible for the big volleyball game.

“Naomi and Michelle’s Excellent Adventure” runs through August 30, with performances at 7 p.m. Thursdays, 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, at the Great American Playhouse, 13005 N. Oracle Road at Rancho Vistoso Blvd.

Tickets are $17.95 general admission, $15.95 students, seniors and active duty military, $7.95 children 12 and under. For details and reservations, 520-512-5145, or visit www.greatamericanplayhouse.com

TUCSON IMPROV MOVEMENT finds a new home

-----Original Message-----
From: Daniel Geffre [mailto:drgeffre@gmail.com]

Subject: TUCSON IMPROV MOVEMENT PRESS RELEASE

TUCSON IMPROV MOVEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 16, 2014
Contact: Justin Lukasewicz
520.314.7299
info@tucsonimprov.com

The Tucson Improv Movement (TIM) is excited to announce that they are
moving to historic 4th Avenue where they will be opening their very
own theater. They signed a lease at 329 East. 7th Street where they
will continue to develop an improvisational comedy theater and
training school, which they have been running for a wonderful year and
a half out of the Red Barn theater. The 1,600 square foot warehouse
space next to D&D Pinball will better accommodate their needs and the
needs of their patrons, providing a nicer facility and a more central
location. TIM is excited to expand with even more weekly, varied
shows, and are honored to continue to contribute to the growing comedy
scene in Tucson. The space will be open to the public this September.

Tucson Improv Movement is the Old Pueblo's newest Improv comedy
organization. Founded in October 2012, the idea came to Justin
Lukasewicz shortly after moving back to Tucson. "For the size of
Tucson, I did not see a lot of improv comedy happening. It became my
daily goal to find ways to create a vibrant comedy community in town!"
Through this TIM was created to provide a venue for people to learn,
perform, and enjoy the art of improvisation. Built through the hard
work of a dedicated collection of comedians, TIM has grown into a
diverse group of thirty performing improvisers. "It's the silliest
type of environment, but its actually the least judgmental," stated
Ben Dietzel a performing company member. TIM produces hilarious long
form improv comedy based on the same
philosophy as the great comedy venues in Los Angeles, Chicago and New
York City. Catch the comedy of the big city, right here in the Old
Peublo!

The Tucson Improv Movement's comedy school allows anyone to easily
learn improv with no prior experience. The comedy school features five
levels of improv training, with the ultimate goal of perfecting the
harold, the most famous long form improv format created by Del Close
in the 1960's. Harvey Gardner a recent student said, "Thanks for your
great gift to us all, clear pointers to how we may confidently,
enthusiastically, innovatively and cooperatively improvise the rest of
our lives." TIM teaches a fast-paced, smart comedy style that pushes
directly on the funny in a scene.

The Tucson Improv Movement currently performs weekly at the Red Barn
Theater on Saturday afternoon at 5 PM. Tickets are $5 at the door, and
$3 for students and military. More information about all of their
comedy offerings: classes, shows, booking, and special events, is
available at tucsonimprov.com, as well as their Facebook and Twitter.

Tucson Improv Movement is currently crowdfunding necessary renovations
for their new space through Kickstarter. Renovations include lights,
sound equipment, chairs, soundproofing, and everything else that goes
into making a modern theater space, all to be completed in time for
their grand opening the weekend of September 13th. For more
information and to donate please visit http://bit.ly/TIMsnewhome (case
sensitive). TIM hopes to create a new comedy hub in the center of
downtown Tucson, a place where everyone can come together to laugh,
learn the comedy arts, and perform. On the new space, instructor
and performer Cory Jenks was proud to say "We have created a fun and positive
environment for people to come learn, practice, and watch improvised
comedy in a short time in a less than ideal space, and I can only
imagine the amazing things we will do once we get to the space we are
moving into!"

A SHARPER "DOROTHY PARKER'S LAST CALL"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

     Leslie Abrams becomes Dorothy Parker.

Leslie Abrams at Live Theatre Workshop has sharpened her take on the acerbic wit of Dorothy Parker, best known for being an outspoken female among males enjoying the heady atmosphere in the 1920s and 1930s at the famed Algonquin Round Table -- New York’s literary equivalent of the cool kids’ table.

Other dazzling minds who gathered around this Manhattan dining room at the Algonquin Hotel included Alexander Woollcott, Robert Benchley, Harold Ross, Robert E. Sherwood and Franklin Pierce Adams, the newspaper columnist who made their wordplay and wars of wit famous in “The Conning Tower.”

Abrams as Parker mentions several times how sophomoric she considered the snarky comments that made her and other Round Table regulars so well known, because pop culture personalities of those times were actually admired for being smart.

It’s easy to forget these days – buried under the 24/7 media barrage of new faces determined to get our attention with rude, crude, loud and obnoxious behavior – that there was a period when biting humor was considered a weapon of mass destruction.

A rapier wit, they called this weapon, and one of the most brilliant in wielding it precisely was Dorothy Parker. Her career spanned both World Wars and her resume came to include satirist, short story writer, literary critic and screenwriter.

Yet it was the rabid rejoinders that people remember best to this day.

Wikipedia reminds us Parker also received two Academy Award nominations for screen writing and was later considered by the government to be such a threatening social activist she was put on Hollywood’s communist blacklist. Parker also left her entire estate to the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., when she passed away in 1967.

It is this life-long dedication to social justice that first motivated Abrams to write “Dorothy Parker’s Last Call” some five years ago and perform it as a one-woman piece of theater.

The work as directed by Sabian Trout has had some fine tuning in rehearsals for this production, which runs a crisp and quick 85 minutes without intermission.

Abrams spices her portrayal with plenty of Parker’s salty sizzlers, but we do get some depth and insight into the writer’s troubled childhood from which came her insistence on justice for all.

Notable Parker quotes include: “If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to.”

“This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.”

“Brevity is the soul of lingerie.”

Performances of  “Dorothy Parker’s Last Call” continue through July 19 at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, at Live Theatre Workshop, 5317 E. Speedway Blvd.  Closing Thursday Performance, July 17, 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 general admission; $18 for seniors 62+, students and military; $14 for the Closing Thursday Performance. For details and reservations, 520-327-4242, or visit www.livetheatreworkshop.org

Auditions continue at St. Francis Theatre, A Midsummer Night’s Dream

From: David Goguen [mailto:theplaysthethingdg@gmail.com]
Sent: Monday, June 23, 2014 11:00 PM
Subject: Auditions continue at St. Francis Theatre

Auditions continue at St. Francis Theatre for September performances of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The two remaining audition times are:

Thursday 06-26-14, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm &

Saturday 06-28-14, 10:00 am to noon

All auditions at St Francis in the Foothills  4625 E. River Rd.  Tucson AZ 85718  Room 30-31

We will be casting up to 16 adult parts (young and older) and 5 youth parts (general age range of 15 to 19 with previous stage experience).

A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of Shakespeare's most beloved and entertaining plays. It depicts the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, the madcap romantic escapades of four young lovers and the efforts of six inept amateur actors as they seek to achieve fame.  These characters are helped or hindered (or both) by a group of fairies from the forest.  This lighthearted comedy will, for the most part, retain William Shakespeare's brilliant original language but will be set in modern times to enhance relevancy and comedic opportunities.  Prior classical/Shakespearian experience is not required.

Come prepared to read excerpts from the script that will be provided.  Bring a bio and headshot, if available.  Plan to stay for as long as the full 2 hour block.  This play will be directed by Mike Wilkinson.

St. Francis Theatre has provided a wide variety of theatrical entertainment to a loyal following for over 20 years.  We specialize in offering a quality theatre experience in an intimate setting at an affordable price.
