Comedic Improv on the Ave

Ever seen someone hit in the face by an imaginary pie or chased through an imaginary forest by an invisible flying purple people-eater? Well, neither have I, but if this sounds like something that could be your cup of, er, imaginary tea, a comedy show at the Tucson Improv Movement (TIM) is your perfect prescription. And come the middle of this month, a night of laughing your butt off will mean nothing more than an easy jaunt down 4th Avenue.
Though they are the youngest improv comedy troupe (and probably the youngest performance troupe in general) in Tucson, the TIM crew is rising quickly to the forefront of the local funny-folk scene, and their new location next to D&D Pinball on 7th Street promises them even more visibility — and more regular shows — than ever before.
TIM’s Producer and Founding Member Justin Lucasewicz came to Tucson in 2012 by way of North Carolina, where he performed and trained future cast members with a comedy group called DSI Theater. In October of that year he taught his first local improv class to a group of five students in the back room of Lotus Massage and Wellness Center (“so, lots of good jokes there,” he says) and by May of 2013, he and his first ensemble players were performing weekly shows and holding regular classes at the Red Barn Theater on North Main Street just south of Speedway. But, as enrollment in TIM’s workshops continued to increase, Lucasewicz and team saw that the small theater was not going to be able to meet their needs indefinitely.
“We’ve outgrown our digs at the Red Barn Theater,” says Lucasewicz. He explains that TIM has had to work around the schedule of the house performance troupe there, meaning severe limitations on the number of shows that the comedy troupe can put on, as well as limits to the availability if the space for teaching classes. The new space, he says, will allow TIM to bump the number of weekly performances from one to upwards of five right off the bat, and will also allow for much greater flexibility with respect to catering to improv students.
Since June, cast members have been working to get the new space ready (soundproofing the wall shared with the neighboring pinball arcade, building a stage, getting the lighting and sound systems up to snuff, painting) to prepare for their “Backers-Only” soft open on Saturday, Sept. 6, which will feature performances for the fans that contributed to their $10,000 Kickstarter Campaign toward renovations. The following Friday, though, performances will open to the public for the first time and needless to say, the TIM comedians are jazzed for the big day. Not only will TIM be the best (and, often, only) place to catch a live theatrical performance on 4th, but Lucasewicz says that being on the Avenue means that the crew is “getting a lot of really good buzz, which,” he asserts, “is cool.” Super cool.
If you’re looking to have your gut-busted on a Friday or Saturday night or are searching for a way to sharpen your funny bone, 4th Avenue is now officially Tucson’s primary proprietor of the world’s best medicine. No, I’m not talking about medical marijuana — I’m talking about laughter. And when it comes to that good stuff, I think we could all afford to up our dosage.
The new TIM location can be found at 329 E. 7th St. The grand opening is Saturday, Sept. 13. Showtimes and information on registering for improv classes are available at TucsonImprov.com.

Subject: IFA September Call Sheet

1.  Philip Sedgwick Awarded IFA Writer of the Year.  Independent Film Arizona has given its 2014 Best Writer Award to celebrated screenwriter Philip Sedgwick.  Phil has written more than forty screenplays, including most recently, the highly acclaimed Mirage at Zabul Province.  The IFA Best Writer Award will be presented at IFA's Tuesday, September 2 Meeting, at 7:00 PM at the Auld Dubliner, 800 University in Tucson.  Phil will be presenting his Ten Tips for a Successful Screenwriter at the September 2 Meeting.

2. Arizona Underground Film Festival.  The 7th Annual Arizona Underground Film Festival will present from September 19 to September 27.  It is still accepting submissions and encourages submissions from Southern Arizona filmmakers.  To submit or for more information  go to their website at azuff.org

3.  September 5 -- First Friday at the Loft.  This Friday (September 5) is the first friday of the month so at 9:00 PM Max Cannon will be hosting First Friday at the Loft (3233 East Speedway in Tucson).  Bring in your short (less than 15 minutes) during the day on Friday and see if it gets some love (and a $200 cash prize) or if it gets the feared gong.  It cost nothing to submit a film and all films play for at least three minutes.

4.  IFA's September Actors Meeting.  Independent Film Arizona meets on the first Tuesday of every month. 5.  James Gandolfini.  Ya Ya Perez (Independent Film Arizona's resident film critic) would like to recommend Romance and Cigarettes.  This is a 2005 release that went straight to DVD, despite the fact that it was directed by John Turturro and starred James Gandolfini and Kate Winslet.   This film is both a relationship drama and it is a musical.  If you want Tony Soprano to sing to you -- check out Romance and Cigarettes.  It's lots of fun.

6.  Tucson Film and Music Festival. The Tucson Film and Music Festival will be presenting from October 9 to October 12. STRADA Company seeks

One female dancer

to perform in a show at the 2014 Tucson Fringe Festival. This is a paid position. The dance piece has specific music and the part requires a handful of spoken lines as well. Interesting performers should contact Strada at

StradaTheatre@gmail.com

This is a paid position.

About the show.

Tucson, Arizona –August 29, 2014 – The other 2014 Tucson Fringe Festival show is a comical bit of anarchy called Time, Gentlemen, Please.  Following the life of a comic who suffers chronic depression, Time, Gentlemen, Please is a performance by the Comic interrupted by his life and possibly his death. "Comedy has often been described as 'shock and a victim,'" says Josh Parra, "Shock and a victim is also an excellent definition for your whole life." While the company is touching upon the raw nerve in the wake of Robin Williams' death, Scott is undeterred. "Depression and humor are strange handmaidens. Should we just pretend that's not a problem? It's a raw show."

Schedule at the Tucson Fringe

Time, Gentlemen, Please by the STRADA company

Friday, September 12 at 7:30 PM at Club Congress

Saturday, September 13 at 2:30 PM Club Congress

About FST!

FST! was founded in 2012 as a creative outlet for women to have a voice in Tucson. Each month FST! invites four or more women to write and perform personal stories based on a set prompt or theme. With each person's individual perspective on the theme, each FST! performance is uniquely unpredictable, often inspiring much laughter and the occasional tear from the audience. As passionate as FST! members are about storytelling, FST! also focuses on supporting the local community by raising funds for arts and community organizations
