SAPAC presents Hot Mikado

HOT MIKADO

PERFORMING AT SCOUNDREL & SCAMP THEATRE

January 17-26, 2020

This hilarious and ‘HOT’ updating of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic masterpiece weaves a sharp witted, fun-filled tale where - despite life or death stakes - characters still find time to tap their toes and croon their troubles away. Set in a fictionalized Japan, at a time when outlandish laws harshly sentence people for almost any indiscretion, it is the language of jazz, gospel and the blues that is spoken most fluently. Hot Mikado thrills by combining traditional Japanese storytelling with the big band sights and sounds of popular American song and dance.

Have you wondered what are the secrets of great performing artists, and how you could work toward becoming one yourself?

In our Technique I, II, and III classes, you will experience the foundation of what Stanislavsky considered his ‘greatest discovery’ after 40 years of research: Psychophysical Action. (The "secret" deemed by all great actors to produce organic behavior & spontaneity in performance). Master Teacher, Director, Author (Experiencing Stanislavsky Today) Philip G. Bennett, will share with you what he has found to be the most successful acting techniques from his 50 years of teaching the System. You will learn: Focus & Concentration through Yoga based Meditation; Psychophysical Conditioning Exercises that unite the mind and body and release spontaneous emotions; all 89 Elements of the Stanislavsky System based on Physical Action; Short and Long-Form Dramatic Improvisation tools (Etudes) used with ‘Active Analysis through Physical Actions,’ and applied to the interpretation of a text; Monologue & Scene Study...just to name a few. Students who show proficiency take part in public Showcases of selected Scenes and Full-Length Plays.

The Best Way to Enjoy the Tucson Fringe Festival

From: Tucson Fringe Festival <tucsonfringe@gmail.com>
Sent: Monday, December 23, 2019 3:14 PM
Subject: The Best Way to Enjoy the Tucson Fringe Festival

The 2020 Tucson Fringe Festival is

Almost Here

The 9th Annual Tucson Fringe Festival is just around the corner, January 9-12, 2020. Whether you're a seasoned Fringe Expert, or this is going to be your first Fringe Festival we're here to help you get the most out of your weekend.

HOW DO I FIND OUT ABOUT FRINGE FESTIVAL SHOWS?
We've got 23 shows in our festival this year - that's a lot to take in. How do you decide if you want to see some storytelling, acrobatics, improv, drama, dance, or original music? We've got lots of ways to access our lineup. Our full-color printed program is available on our website here. Or check out the weekend schedule at a glance here.  Or scroll through the list of show pictures and descriptions here

WHERE and WHEN CAN I GET A SNEAK PEEK AT THE SHOWS?
If you're like me, you want to see the movie trailer before shelling out your hard-earned cash to see the whole thing. On Thursday, January 9th we've got THREE ways for you to see some of the variety that Fringe has to offer.

Bookmans East 2-3pm
Bookmans Midtown 3-4pm

And our special TWO MINUTE PREVIEW PARTY will be Thursday January 9th 6-9pm on the Cafe Passe Patio - mingle with the performers and check out snippets of 15 different shows!

HOW DO I GET TICKETS?
Use the button below to access our ticketing page where you can see show descriptions and buy tickets right there. Each show is only $10 if you buy tickets individually (discounts for multi-show passes). 100% of that revenue goes right back to the performers.

Click Here For Tickets and Multi-Show Passes

WHAT ABOUT THE MULTI-SHOW PASSES?
Multi-show passes are a great way to save some money and get more out of your festival weekend. They can be used with a friend, or keep it for yourself and see as many shows as you can. Each show is only one hour long, with 30 minutes in between - plenty of time to walk to another venue (or take a Bird scooter if you're feeling adventurous!), or check out one of the restaurants or retailers offering a discount for Fringe button-holder.

HOW DO I RESERVE A SEAT FOR A SPECIFIC SHOW WHEN I HAVE A MULTI-SHOW PASS?
When you purchase the multi-show pass, there's a "memo" box that you can comment in before you pay. Simply type in the names of the shows you want to see and the times (remember, many shows have two or three performances) and we'll reserve you a seat.  Or, you can always email us at tucsonfringe@gmail.com or call us at 520-261-4851.

What's the FRINGE BUTTON all about?
As you probably know, 100% of the ticket sales at Tucson Fringe go back to the performers.
This little $3 button is what keeps the festival itself going. It's like your ticket into the Carnival Fair Grounds. Plus, it's like a secret decoder ring that unlocks discounts at several downtown retailers and restaurants. And you don't have to eat a whole box of cereal to get it!
You can purchase your button online
or at any of our venues.
Every audience member needs a button
to get in to the shows.

Our Unscrewed Instructors

Alan has been a member of Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed since 2015. With over seven years of Improv experience, he has five years of teaching improvisation skills to college students to adults.

Alan believes that basic improv techniques can be taken off-stage to improve personal and professional relationships for everyone. All you need is you.

Mike has been studying, performing and teaching improv for over 15 years. He is one of the founding members of Unscrewed Theater and performs weekly with the Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed: Tucson's premier improv troop.

He firmly believes that the skills you learn in improv are directly applicable to everyday life as well!

Scott has been a member of Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed for over 13 years.

He was born Houston, Texas, and struggles to hide his thick southern accent. He's also married to another member of the troupe. You get to guess who.

During the day Scott is better lit and works as a teacher.

Cy is a musician with an IT day job. She's a perpetual student of music, theater, and improv and relishes every opportunity to entertain people.

Along with being the musical director for From The Top, she performs with Unscrewed Theater's Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed and From The Top and Tucson's nerdiest steel drum band, Apocalypso.

Cy is probably not your uncle.

Jessica has been at main stage player with Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed for over 12 years and has been teaching for five.

She holds a bachelors degree in theater with a emphasis in directing from University of Michigan and combines a passion for performance with grounded, real world techniques in her classes.

Chris has been a performing member of Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed since 2005, and teaching improv for over five years. He is currently Executive Director of Unscrewed Theater.

In addition to collaborating with Unscrewed Theater's professional instructor team, Chris has studied improv theory with a variety of improv veterans, including educational directors of Second City and iO.

Chris believes the world would be a better place if everyone took an improv class - AND, it's fun!

“MASTER HAROLD”…AND THE BOYS

By ATHOL FUGARD
Directed by KENT GASH

A semi-autobiographical masterwork.Of all Athol Fugard’s plays, none is more personal or shatteringly honest than “Master Harold”…and the Boys; because it relates a boyhood incident which involved himself and which haunted him for years until he tried to atone by writing this play. It may take place in South Africa during the early years of apartheid, but its depiction of the ways in which people are capable of hurting even those they love transcends the political landscape of bigotry and oppression that inspired it. The play recounts the long, rainy afternoon that Hally (“Master Harold”) spends with Sam and Willie, two middle-aged African servants of his parents’ household who have cared for seventeen-year-old Hally his whole life. This particular afternoon turns into a profound and life-changing experience for all involved. A stunning masterpiece, one of the most powerful coming-of-age plays ever written, and still timely, still compelling, still profoundly moving.
