AN AFTERNOON OF UNNATURAL SELECTION

The Rogue Theatre teams up with
The Charles Darwin Experience for an afternoon of improvisation.

In celebration of all the supporters who have helped The Rogue renovate a new theatre, The Rogue Theatre is joining with UA's The Charles Darwin Experience to present an afternoon of long-form improvisation on Sunday August 16, 2009 at 4:00 p.m.

More story-oriented than short-form, or comedy improv, the long-form allows the actors to spin out a spontaneous story and explore character and situation in greater depth.  Long-form improvisations typically play out for a half-hour or more. There will, of course, be plenty of laughs and a few quick games thrown in, molded by audience suggestions and participation, for a variety of improvisation experiences. This event promises an afternoon that is fast, funny and fascinating.

"The idea for an afternoon of improv grew out of our association with John Shartzer, who is a delightful young man and has acted in many of the Rogue plays," says Rogue Associate Artistic Director, Cynthia Meier.  "John is a member of the long-lived UA Charles Darwin improv troupe.  Joe McGrath and I went to see one of their performances last year and laughed and laughed.  Afterwards, we wondered if we could create some kind of collaboration that combined our ensemble's acting skills with the incredible wit of the Darwinites.  John liked the idea, too, and here we are!  The rehearsals have been a lot of fun, and we wanted to share some of the fun with our Rogue renovation donors."

An Afternoon of Unnatural Selection is a free event for donors to The Rogue Theatre renovation - and it is easy to be a Rogue donor!  Audience members who have not formally donated will be given the chance to give any amount at the event.  The afternoon will take place at the new Rogue Theatre at 300 East University between 4th & 5th Avenues.  Free parking is available in a lot on Herbert Alley just east of the theatre.  Reservations are not required but are encouraged by e-mailing director@theroguetheatre.org.

The Rogue Theatre's mission is to create the highest quality theatre possible,
challenging, stretching, and invigorating our community.

We emphasize

LANGUAGE by placing primary value on quality language and literature;
ENSEMBLE by developing performers who seek continuous improvement and creating an academy for training ourselves and emerging theatre artists;
CHALLENGING IDEAS by presenting plays which offer complex and provocative points of view
related to important social, political, and personal issues.

Directed by Cynthia Jeffery

with: Carlisle Ellis, Rhonda Hallquist, Holli Henderson, Carrie Hill, Elizabeth Leadon, T Loving, Peg Peterson & Toni Press-Coffman".

This fast-paced savage comedy takes a brutally honest look into the world of American theatre when three actresses are brought together for an ill-fated production of Anton Chekhov¹s, The Three Sisters. Anton In Show Business skewers incompetent producers, egotistical directors, surgically beautified actors, crass sponsors and self-important critics while celebrating the importance of theatre as an art form today. Mature themes and language.

BEST COMEDY

BEST ACTOR – Ryan DeLuca

THE BIBLE BELT . . . AND OTHER ACCESSORIES

Written by Paul Bonin-Rodriguez and directed by Kevin Johnson

The local press says:

"Ryan DeLuca is excellent . . . The Bible Belt is a complete and satisfying theater experience . . . It's damn hard to own the stage for some 80 minutes, solo and without a break, but DeLuca pulls it off admirably." – Gene Armstrong Tucson Weekly

"DeLuca snugly fits role in poignant 'Bible Belt'…There is a sweetness and innocence of Ryan DeLuca's performance that gives the poignant parts a tug of courageous heartbreak" -  Chuck Graham, Tucson Citizen

"Comedy about Dairy Queen worker staged with indelible joy and affection . . . Oh, how we love this character. . . The Bible Belt, like 'Talk of the Town,' is a strong story, and DeLuca knows how to tell it . . . We can't wait to see what he's up to next."  - Kathy Allen, The Arizona Daily Star

THE BIBLE BELT . . . AND OTHER ACCESSORIES is the continuing story of Johnny Hobson – now a young man still living in a small Texas town, still working at The Dairy Queen, but now discovering things outside of the city limits, including love, humor, and a driving passion to become the next big fashion designer. Winning his Home Economics class contest and going to State Competition, Johnny discovers an admirer, a taste for vegan tamale pie, and an amazingly broad use of rhinestones . . .

When Annie first arrives, wearing sneakers and carrying her belongings in a grocery cart, Manley is taken aback, but she seems so eager to please that he relents after which their relationship progresses rapidly from initial reserve to active hatred. Annie is one of the world's great oddballs, who insults her employer, denigrates his writing, admits she forged her references, accuses Manley of lusting after her and, in general, makes his life  hell. The lively wit and biting humor become funnier as this odd couple go head to head in this outrageous comedy!!

Subject: Re: Tucson Desert Harmony Fundraiser

Come join the fun, be in the cool air conditioned atmosphere, and help a local chapter of the International Sweet Adelines raise funds! A bowling party for all, Saturday, August 1st, 2009 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, you get: 2 hours of bowling, bowling ball, rental shoes, all included, for $12.00 per person.  It's at Lucky Strike Bowl in midtown, 4015 E. Speedway, on the north side of Speedway, between Alvernon and Columbus.
Plus there'll be plenty of good food and drinks, including beer, at reasonable prices on the full menu at the bowling alley. When you arrive, be sure to say you are there in support of Tucson Desert Harmony, please!
Tucson Desert Harmony is Southern Arizona's premier a cappella women's chorus. TDH is a local chapter of Sweet Adelines International, and has successfully built an award-winning women's chorus here in Tucson. This community-wide group of women sing four-part harmony in the "barbershop" style. They sing the familiar songs—the ones people like to hum along with—and also apply the barbershop style to many popular contemporary songs.
The chorus competes annually with other choruses throughout a four-state region that includes West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Southern California. Over the past five years Tucson Desert Harmony improved its scores every year, culminating in a first place finish in 2008 which earned an invitation to compete on a worldwide stage at the October 2009 Sweet Adelines International Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. They always welcome new singers.
Tucson Desert Harmony promotes quality barbershop music while singing with passion, enthusiasm and energy, with each chorus member committed to excellence. Members understand that excellence in singing is accomplished through education, practice, performing, and competing while having fun. Further, the chorus members are committed to sharing their love of music with each other and their community.  For information, please contact www.tucsondesertharmony.org or call (520) 790-1813.

Tucson: BRAUN & BROMBERG JAZZ BENEFIT

July 6, 2009; FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

For further information, call 520-903-1265 or visit www.tucsonjazz.org

RENOWNED JAZZ MUSICIANS HELP LOCAL SOCIETY

Rick Braun and Brian Bromberg have practically become household names for Tucson jazz fans, especially those who regularly attend the Tucson Jazz Society?s annual New Year?s Eve Gala. And to not disappoint anyone anticipating a repeat appearance, they?re on the 2009 line-up, as well.

In the meantime, as a kind of Christmas in July, the two talented musicians will return to Tucson for a special sneak preview and fundraiser concert on the 31st of this month to help out their friends at TJS. Organizers of the Celebrity Jazz Benefit are thankful for the generosity of these busy musicians and hope the event will put the non-profit in a more positive financial position.

Trumpeter Braun got his start in contemporary jazz with Sade in 1994 and has been cranking out CDs and gathering awards ever since. His “Beat Street” was the No. 1 smooth jazz record for 1995, he received Gavin?s Artist of the Year and Album of the Year awards in 1996 and his subsequent CDs “Body and Soul” and “Full Stride” became smooth jazz chart toppers.

Bromberg, who grew up in Tucson and began his music career on drums, is now one of the most accomplished bassists in the world. Fluent on acoustic, electric, synthesizer and piccolo bass, Bromberg caught the attention of critics early on who noticed he was doing things with the bass that hadn?t been done before.

Each is considered a crossover artist, recording CDs in both contemporary jazz and mainstream jazz styles. Bromberg, especially, has bounced between the two. Braun is currently recording a tribute to trumpeter Chet Baker, which takes Braun back to his earlier career when his music was more reflective of Baker?s introspective approach. Not coincidently, Bromberg contributes to the album.

Straight-ahead jazz will be the emphasis of this timely mid-summer benefit concert as Braun and Bromberg heat up the stage backed by Judy Roberts, Greg Fishman and some of Tucson?s finest jazz artists.

The July 31 event will be held at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa, 3800 West Starr Pass Blvd., in its new air-conditioned pavilion, starting at 7 p.m. A special $99 room rate is being offered for the night, based on availability; call 888-527-8989.

Tickets are $25 for the general public, $20 for TJS members and $10 for students and military and are available through Bookman?s, www.tucsonjazz.org, 520-903-1265 or 800-595-4849. Premium tables for two are $175 general public, $150 members. Additional contributions are welcome.
