Wamer Mime and A3D Productions present, “Tales of Transformation”

Wamer Mime and A3D Productions present, "Tales of Transformation" directed by Rick Wamer

Three physically imagined, short plays to provoke reflection and humor.  "Kafka's Monkey" is the award-winning play by Colin Teevan.   A thirty-five-minute solo monologue of particularly physical endurance. Imprisoned in a cage and desperate to escape, Kafka's monkey reveals his journey to become a walking, talking, spitting, smoking, hard-drinking man of the stage.  Based on the short story A Report to an Academy by Franz Kafka, this new adaptation reveals human tensions with freedom and choice, how we often deal with our human limitations, and begs the question, "How far behind us is our primitive animal nature?"  A cogent tale for our times.

"Inside Caligari" is an ensemble theatrical mime work by Rick Wamer, loosely inspired by the silent film classic, "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari", and is a query into current hazards of social and populist inducements to slumber and, "What price, freedom?"  A short visually poetic essay on the transformational conflicts within the carnival of the mind!  "Genesis" is a short monologue by Rick Wamer that takes place at a young author's conference.  A reveal of a more innocent time stolen away by confrontations of harsh realities of life and death.  It is a delightfully humorous pathos of the transformation of innocence to the next phase of life's journey.

Wamer has cast Kate Clarke in the lead role of "Kafka's Monkey" which represents his spoken theatre directorial debut in Tucson, following many years of directing and co-producing the works of Theatrical Mime Theatre with Lorie Heald.  In Seattle, Ms. Clarke has worked with Annex Theatre, Alice B., The Seattle Group, The Empty Space, New City Theatre, Printers Devil, and the Seattle Shakespeare company. The cast of "Inside Caligari" includes three actors from Los Angeles, Jessica Denison, Brenna Fredrickson, and Susanne Makosky, and Ryan Lawrence from Tucson.  "Genesis", a work he created, is also performed by Wamer, the 2015 recipient of the Buffalo Exchange Contributor to the Arts Award.  Wamer exhibits "...an impressive depth of interpretation and heart" – Marcel Marceau "…never less than mesmerizing." – Tucson Weekly

Free staged reading of “The Higher Education of Khalid Amir" on February 20

From: Monica Bauer [mailto:playwrightmeb@aol.com]
Sent: Friday, January 27, 2017 9:59 AM
Subject: press release for free staged reading on February 20

"NOT MY PRESIDENT'S DAY" POLITICAL THEATER

February 20th, from 7 to 8:30,

on the ZUZI Theater stage at The Historic Y

Free, adult situations and language

Join local actors from many of Tucson's theaters for a staged reading of an award-winning political comedy, "The Higher Education of Khalid Amir", directed by the playwright, Monica Bauer. Featuring Tony Caprile, Alida Holguin Gunn, Mark Klugheit, Roger Owen, Clark Ray, Daymeon L. Rembert, and guest artist from New York Debra Lass.

A staged reading of "The Higher Education of Khalid Amir", winner for Best New Script at the Midtown International Theater Festival off-off Broadway, is being presented at ZUZI Theater as part of a national  theater action called "Not My President's Day." On February 20th, theater artists from around the nation will be presenting work that is anti-Trump and anti-Trumpism, organized through the national Facebook group "Nasty Women and Bad Hombres." Tucson's theater action is being coordinated by Monica Bauer, an off-off Broadway playwright who relocated to Tucson in 2015. Since becoming a Tucsonan, Bauer has produced a Solo Theater Festival, and participated in both the 2016 and 2017 Tucson Fringe Festivals. Her group, Theater New and Now, will be presenting a three week run of her play "The Maternal Instinct" at ZUZI! Theater in The Historic Y in March.

Bauer is excited to bring this political play to Tucson. "I'm grateful to Shawn Burke and The Historic Y as well as all these terrific local actors, for this chance to participate in the national "Not My President's Day" theater action. Whether Trump is targeting Muslims, Mexican immigrants, feminists or people of color, he is certainly not my president, and I want to share this funny and hope-filled play with the people of my new home town."

The playwright, who divides her theater work between Tucson and New York, is presenting this free of charge as part of her life long commitment to political activism. The play uses satire to examine Islamaphobia and hatred of immigrants through the eyes of Khalid Amir, a gay, cross-dressing Arab professor accused of terrorism, as he is pursued by the dumbest FBI agent in American history. Bauer comes by her keen understanding of Islamophobia from the year she spent as an Assistant Professor at the American University in Cairo. She recently co-produced, with New York theater artist Aizzah Fatima, a collection of anti-Trump plays at the Lady Liberty Theater Festival. Her short play about a Syrian refugee applying for a job, "No Irish Need Apply," was recently seen at the Kennedy Center, and the Irish Arts Center in Manhattan. She is the winner of many awards, including the Emerging Playwright Award from New York's Urban Stages.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE "NOT MY PRESIDENT'S DAY" STAGED READING OF "THE HIGHER EDUCATION OF KHALID AMIR," PLEASE CONTACT MONICA BAUER, 203-906-4810, playwrightmeb@aol.com
