UA Showcasing Student Films Online

POSTED BY NOAH CULLEN ON WED, JUL 29, 2020 AT 11:00 AM

The University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film and Television’s 15th annual I Dream In Widescreen student film festival faced several challenges this year due to COVID-19. However, these complications turned the showcase into an online festival, allowing more viewers to see the student films than ever before.

Originally planned to be hosted at the Fox Theatre, I Dream In Widescreen will be held on Aug. 8th and 9th on Youtube live.

I Dream in Widescreen is the end of the year showcase for undergraduate thesis films. Typically, the films are viewed and juried by alumni followed by a party. This year, the films will still be juried in the same way but will also include guest speakers and talks from alumni as well as others in the industry.

The timing of the pandemic’s onset put the students in a tough position by not allowing them the immediate opportunity to finish their films. Lisanne Skyler, professor at the School of Theatre, Film and Television, explains how the school addressed this problem.

“This year, the lockdown happened as the filmmakers were all in post-production,” Skyler said. “So, fortunately, they were at picture-lock which means they had shot their films and they had made their story edits but they still had a lot to do and they couldn’t access anything on campus because it wasn’t safe.”

When discussing possible solutions, Sklyer came up with the idea of reaching out to Scott Weber, a professional sound mixer and professor in the industry. Weber operates a studio at his home and was able to help the students with their sound design.

“This is a good opportunity where I could come in and help with that, not only to physically mix the films so they get finished but I sort of pitched the idea to use this as sort of a teaching opportunity and a mentorship,” Weber said.

Through a series of individual and group Zoom calls, Weber was able to give the film students suggestions and advice.

“There was no time where we could safely have it in person, so we said let’s take this moment and get a wider audience for your films. So that’s how we came to not only put the films online but to really make this into an event to bring together our alumni community. Many prominent alumni luminaries are involved,” Skyler said.

Previous editions of the event did not include guest speakers. Some of the names joining the event include Eyde Belasco, the casting director for Transparent, Sorry to Bother You, and 500 Days of Summer. Scott Stuber, alum and head of original films at Netflix, is doing the kickoff talk.

I Dream In Widescreen will be hosted on the UA School of Theatre, Film and Television’s Youtube channel starting on Saturday, Aug. 8. For more information, visit https://idiw.tftv.arizona.edu/

LET THE FEAST BEGIN IN FRENCH AT LE RENDEZVOUS

LET THE FEAST BEGIN IN FRENCH AT LE RENDEZVOUS

Cold duck pate with a baguette, martinis and candlelight begin our evening of French fare from Le Rendezvous Bistro & Restaurant.

Everybody loves Italian food and who doesn't have a favorite Asian dish, but nothing says “special occasion” like reservations at a French restaurant. Particularly if it is Le Rendezvous Bistro & Restaurant, 3844 Fort Lowell Road.

Neither Bernice nor I had any birthdays or anniversaries to celebrate, but Bastille Day was in the air, and seeing how the Le Rendezvous menu said we could order “Escargot Au Chablis” and “Croque Monsieur” to go, there was no reason to resist.
So while she went looking for the perfect little black dress, I went online for the correct
Purple and gold would be the colors for our table setting, with proper attention paid to the warming and slicing of our demi-baguetttes.

The wine had already been cooled when I picked up our order curbside at the restaurant, so I wrapped the bottle in a beach towel for the ride home. That seemed to work pretty well.
Le Rendezvous does take its carry-out orders seriously. Every dish comes with its own re-heating instructions, from French Onion Soup to the Pithivier (almond cream in a puff pastry) that became our dessert. Both of the entrees we picked – Coq Au Riesling and Duck Confit Cassoulet – were frozen in flavor-sealed pouches ready to be dropped straight into boiling pots of water.

Coq au Riesling with bacon, mushrooms, mashed potatoes and garden vegetables is Gallic comfort food, for sure.

These thoughtfully prepared dishes came out of the pot looking quite lovely, as Bernice opened and plated them for their photos. Ever attentive to details, Victor found beguiling French cafe music from the Pandora website's Nouvelle Vague channel to play softly in the background.
I kept pushing aside thoughts of wondering whatever happened to my black beret and wishing I could light up an unfiltered cigarette. Another sip of that crisp martini kept my attention focused on the hefty slice of coarsely ground pate, rich with a complex blend of roast duck and garden herb flavors.

The Duck Confit Cassoulet of white beans, with a link of andouille sausage, was equally comforting.

Only, that set my mind swirling with visions of those formal paintings that always portray a classic French countryside. The ones where two young people in tousled clothing enjoy each other's company under the welcoming boughs that spread across a verdant meadow. You know the kind.
Was it the light from those tall candles that kept flickering in my memory?

Our tandem of entrees, Coq Au Riesling and Duck Confit Cassoulet, did look enticing in that candlelight. Each was an ample portion framed with promising side dishes adding their own accent notes.
Just as the name suggests, Coq Au Riesling is a white wine version of the more familiar Coq Au Vin. The Riesling lends its own sweetness, especially appreciated after that opening course of savory pate.
The chicken itself was tender and moist, full of deep flavors that added an extra dimension to the potential that's possible in “carry-out” orders. This can be said of the duck, as well.
Served in an equally generous portion, the dish traveled without incident from its midtown restaurant kitchen to Bernice's northwest side home. Along for the ride was a complementary link of andouille sausage to balance out the flavors nicely.
The Angel of Dessert joins us for a divine finish to our dinner of companionable delights.
Our dessert of Pithivier was simplicity itself, a puff pastry filled with almond crème which takes its name from the town of Pithiviers in the country's north-central region. Le Rendezvous recommends heating for 10 minutes in a 300-degree toaster oven. We added our own cups of dark roast French coffee.

The candles still had a few inches left to burn, so we lingered on with another coffee, wanting to savor more of our memories of the evening and those soft rhythms of Nouvelle Vague.

Our toast to Le Rendezvous for its culinary magic carpet. Thanks for the memories.

Good Health to Everyone!!!

🎪🎪🎪

As much as we're missing regular life, we have been enjoying connecting with people virtually and in small groups. Fall session begins August 3rd.

How it will work:

We will run a combination of small group lessons and classes and virtual offerings.

Small Group Lessons

Our primary offering for the fall semester will be small group lessons by appointment. You can request a private session or to be added to a group of three. Pricing will be $50 an hour for one person, $80 for two, $100 for three ($33.33 per person). You will let us know what skill you want to do, if you want to do a one-on-one or be assigned to a group of three and a few times that work. We will create the schedule based on responses. You can request your session here:

Virtual Classes

We will continue to run virtual classes with Tran, Katherine, and Jordan.

Tran will offer Handstands, Contortion and Flexibility.

Katherine will offer Baby Circus and Advanced Circus.

QUESTION! I'd also be glad to offer Preschool and Kinder circus virtually as Baby Circus has gone so well, let me know if you are interested!

Jordan will offer an At Home Muscle Recovery class.

Camps--- Your feedback is appreciated!

With school being a bit up in the air, we thought we might offer a small group, socially distanced "camp" style class two afternoons a week. Tuesday/Thursday 1:00-3:30. $30 a class or $50 for both per week. We are also open to doing more/longer sessions if it is desired!

Is this something you would be interested in/attend? Email me to let me know. We'll run it with 4 kids and we'll cap it at 8 kids. Just like summer camp they will each have a dedicated mat station that is at least 6 feet (but in general more like 10ft) away from other kids and they work from that station.

Group Classes

We will offer one regular group class a week that is Beg/Int Youth Circus, Saturdays 11:30-1:00. It will be $20 per class, capped at 8 kids. Register here:   https://circusacademytucson.com/fall-2020-class-schedule-and-pricing

As artists, it is both our passion and our duty to reflect the world around us.

Consequently, Winding Road is proud to present Schrodinger's Gun, by Greg A. Smith.  Schrodinger's Gun is an entry from our first annual Eight 10s in Tucson ten minute play festival.

Mr. Smith's suspenseful commentary on police brutality has achieved heightened relevance in the current climate of protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

We would like to thank Mr. Smith for permitting us to stream this topical work. We hope that you will find it illuminating.

Tucson Artists for Change: Tucson virtual Town Hall and Survey

Subject: Reminder: Tucson Town Hall ans Survey

For Immediate Release 07/24/20

TUCSON PERFORMING ARTS TOWN HALL

ON DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14TH, 2020 at 6:00pm

There will be a virtual Town Hall with the goal to create a more inviting and equitable experience for all our local and visiting artists.

Experiences that local artists have had in relationship to racial bias will be addressed, followed by a discussion of action plans that many of our local performing arts leaders are proposing for their own organizations around topics specific, but not exclusive, to the performing arts.

We wanted to remind our Performing Arts Community to please engage with this anonymous survey linked here (before July 31st if possible).

We have already received several testimonials and are incredibly grateful to those of you who have been willing to share your unnecessarily painful experiences. Truly, thank you.

We also wanted to acknowledge that all artists, no matter your ethnicity, might have encountered or witnessed behavior that could have roots in racial bias, AND that encountering or witnessing moments of allyship are equally as valuable to this process – we appreciate them all.

We are all at different stages of understanding our own inherent biases, but as a community, and only as a community, we can and will work towards being inclusive, equitable, and above all, anti-racist.

We invite you, artists from all walks, patrons of the arts, and anyone else in the community who wants to witness and support this movement to attend the September 14th Town Hall.

A precise web address to join the event will be released closer to the Town Hall date, so please keep an eye out!

Thank you,

Tucson Performing Artists for Change
