SAPAC & The Inner Voice Studio present the musical ALICE BY HEART

Southern Arizona Performing Arts Company  and The Inner Voice Studio present

ALICE BY HEART

by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater

Alice by Heart is a stirring indie-folk musical inspired by "Alice in Wonderland", that asks serious questions about the purpose of art in hard times, escapism and grief.

In Alice by Heart, teens are taking shelter in an underground train station during the London bombing blitz of 1941. In order to distract themselves, they take on familiar characters, including the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, Caterpillar, Cheshire Cat and Queen of Hearts and use found objects as props. As they travel through the tale, the actors explore the poignancy of first love, coming to terms with loss, and finding the courage to move forward. This musical encourages us all to celebrate the transformational power of the imagination, even in the harshest of times.

PRE-SHOW TALKBACK + TEA PARTY

One hour before every show, there will be a 30 minute Pre-Show Talkback and Mad Hatter Tea Party where members of the production team and cast will discuss the show, concept, and answer any audience questions before diving into Wonderland! We highly recommend attending as it will aid in your enjoyment of this beautiful and complicated show and give you a chance to meet the amazing performers and creative team. The Tea Party is being sponsored  by Tucson's own Scented Leaf Tea House with thematic drinks made by their mixologist just for this show! We will also have Alice in Wonderland Snacks!

ALICE BY HEART PRESS RELEASE

We want to bring creative, innovative, and immersive theater to Tucson.

We have created a theater and stage at 3330 E Speedway Blvd (the former Bookmans). The space has exposed brick and an industrial look with exposed ceilings that is reminiscent of the London Subway of the 1940s and will immediately bring the audience into the world the actors are creating.  There will be moving scaffolding that the actors can climb with a live band. We want to have the feel of an underground rock concert as the actors go back and forth between the escape of imagination and the bleak real world of war.

Thank you to our friends at Larsen Baker for sponsoring this production and unconventional performance space!
