Second Master Class in Ensemble Acting at The Rogue Theatre

From: Director [mailto:director@theroguetheatre.org]
Sent: Thursday, October 31, 2013 12:11 AM
Subject: Second Master Class in Ensemble Acting at The Rogue Theatre

MASTER CLASSES IN ENSEMBLE ACTING AT THE ROGUE THEATRE

Saturday November 9th

10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

For the first time, The Rogue is offering a series of master acting classes. The classes will be facilitated by Rogue resident actor and training coordinator, Matt Bowdren, with members from The Rogue Theatre's Resident Acting Company as guests and participants.

The classes will focus on the same training that the Rogue actors engage in on a weekly basis, training the actor to work in a larger ensemble, to engage the imagination to fuel acting choices, and to unlock potential for creating character.

The second class in the series on November 9th will be a three-hour session that expands upon character creation methods while working in a resident ensemble. On our feet we will use archetypes to identify habitual gestures, patterns, and physical lives. Through the archetypes, and Laban effort shapes, we will create usable characters and scenarios. All of our work is geared toward expanding our range and understanding of the role of the actor in an ensemble.

Matt Bowdren holds an M.F.A. in Performance from the University of Georgia and a B.F.A. from the University of Arizona. He teaches as an Adjunct Instructor in Acting at both the University of Arizona and Pima Community College. Matt is the training coordinator for and member of The Rogue Theatre's Resident Acting Company. At The Rogue, Matt most recently appeared in Mistake of the Goddess, after the quake, Richard III, Metamorphosis, Mother Courage, The Night Heron, and Journey to the West.  Other Arizona credits include The Pillowman (The Now Theatre), Romeo and Juliet (Southwest Shakespeare), and Titus Andronicus (Arizona Repertory Theatre).  In Georgia, Matt has been seen in The Shape of Things, Betrayal, Endgame, and The Comedy of Errors. In New York City, Matt performed in Somewhere in Between with Collaborative Stages and Midsummer Night's Dream with the Hudson Shakespeare Company.

All levels of acting skill and experience

(actors 16 years old and older) are invited.

Cost: $35 per session

Please reserve your space in this limited enrollment class by contacting director@TheRogueTheatre.org.

You find yourself with a growing fear of commitment--AND then you discover you have long-lost siblings AND as luck would have it, you meet up with an old rival AND there is a case of mistaken identity at a wedding AND you are faced with intrigue of a possible murder...

Where are you?

No, not on your couch eating ice cream out of the carton in a ratty robe watching your "stories" (you DO have a life after all and are not pathetic!)

You are at the Arizona Women's Theatre Company's Pandora Festival of New Works--a three day event at the Black Box on Brown Theatre at 318 E. Brown Road, Mesa, AZ .

On November 15, 16, 17  the Pandora Festival will showcase new works that have been previously adjudicated with the 16 most popular works presented over two evenings and two matinees.

"Every year we put out a call for our Arizona sister's works--our Arizona women writers, our mothers and daughters, our aunts and grandmothers, our 'sisters'. Their works are juried by other Arizona women who write, read, teach, direct and produce in real life. And what magically appears is the annual festival.  They take a chance on us and we take a chance---that You will love their works!"

Call for Directors, UofA Studio Series - applications due 10/31

University of Arizona

The School of Theatre, Film and Television

Call for Directors/Director Application

Studio Series   TAR 497W/597W

The School of Theatre, Film and Television produces a season of Studio Series productions each year for majors in the BA program in Theatre Arts or majors in the BA in Film and Television.  The Studio Series is dedicated to supporting original, contemporary, and experimental pieces of performance through a “bare essentials” production format that draws primary focus to the artistic and intellectual labor of theatre students.  Its community-centered, people-generated approach to performance provides creative learning opportunities for student artists, thought-provoking experiences for audiences, and occasions for productive dialogue around topics relevant to student populations and the broader Tucson community.

The Studio Series productions are coordinated by a committee that includes faculty and student representatives from the School.  The School provides a stock set of scenery, props and costumes as well as limited lighting and sound.  Productions are housed in the Harold Dixon Directing Studio which is a black box theatre that seats about 80. The playing space is approximately 14’ x 25’ with a 9’ ceiling/grid.  Due to the small space and ceiling height, smoking, the firing of guns, and video projections are not possible.

Directors are also instructors for the course TAR 497W and are responsible for the course as well as the production. Our goal is to offer 5- 10 roles per production. Given our population, we encourage scripts with a strong cast of women characters.  We also encourage full act plays that embrace a variety of styles as well as contemporary new works.

There are four productions in the season – two during fall semester and two during spring. At least one of the productions (usually the second production in fall) is a devised play.  Auditions are held at the beginning of each semester (Aug/Sept for Fall; January for Spring).  Rehearsals are four weeks with a fifth week of dress rehearsals and four performances.  Devised productions usually rehearse for six weeks in order to accommodate script development.

Please submit a cover letter with your resume and up to three play titles and/or up to three ideas for a devised play you would like to direct in the series.  If you have a copy of the play script, please include.  For each devised play idea and/or script suggested, please include a statement that addresses the following:

  • Conceptualization for the production
  • How the devised play or script fits the mission of the Studio Series
  • # of Characters

                Male:

                Female:

  • How the Design/Technical Requirements fits with the “bare essentials” production format
  • Marketing and Outreach ideas for the play

Please address and send your application (either as hard copy or as PDF) to:

From the award-winning writers of Ragtime, A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE tells the story of Alfie Byrne, a bus driver in 1964 Dublin, whose heart holds secrets he can't share with anyone but his imagined confidante, Oscar Wilde. When Alfie attempts to put on an amateur production of Wilde's Salome in the local church hall, he confronts the forces of bigotry and shame over a love "that dare not speak its name." But the redemptive power of theater changes his life and brings his friends back to his side. A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE is a tender and beautifully woven tale of love, friendship and coming to terms with who we are and who we love.

ALL SOULS PROCESSION, STEEPED IN TRADITION, TAKES PLACE THIS WEEKEND IN DOWNTOWN

All Souls procession is a time to honor and celebrate those who have been lost.

by James J. Jefferies

This Sunday, November 3rd, the 24th Annual All Souls Procession will wind its way through Downtown Tucson once again. In the early 1990s, this event began as a small, invitation-only procession with just a few hundred people, according to organizer Nadia Hagen, who began her journey with the event around 1996. “I came from a background of working on tribal-industrial shows, big concerts,” said Hagen. “I felt as though there was an opportunity here to turn this event into something more open and expressive.” Nearly a generation later, there’s ample evidence to support this assertion, as this year’s event is expected to attract nearly 100,000 participants.
