BORDERLANDS THEATER TO PRESENT THE WORLD PREMIERE OF THE PLAY “SHE WAS MY BROTHER” BY JULIE JENSEN, SEPTEMBER 24-OCTOBER 11, 2009 AT ZUZI’S LITTLE THEATER, 783 N. 5TH AVENUE.

Julie Jensen, the playwright who brought us the critically acclaimed play “Dust Eaters” (2007 Season), is back with “the most unlikely love story every told.” What happens when two Victorian white anthropologists –Tullis, a mature woman and Wilson, a young man- encounter Lamana, a “two-spirited” religious leader of the Zuni pueblo? This moving and intense play, loosely based on historical fact, explores the borderline between love, sexual orientation and fluid gender identities.

Directed by Barclay Goldsmith. Featuring Los Angeles film actor Kalani Queypo (“New World”, “Bones”, “The Royal Tennenbaums”, and Culture Clash) and local actors Martie van der Voort and Brian Levario.

Tucson, Arizona--
Pima Community College Theatre Arts brings to life one of the most memorable characters in American children’s fiction in its first production of the season, RAMONA QUIMBY. Adapted by Len Jenkins and based on the Newberry Award-winning books by Beverly Cleary it is directed by Betsy Kruse Craig. The production runs September 23 through October 4 in the Center for the Arts Proscenium Theatre (public performances are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.) ASL interpreters are available October 2. Tickets are $6. Ramona’s Play Date, a free event for families featuring kid-friendly activities and treats, is Saturday, September 12 from 9-11 a.m. in the Black Box Theatre.

Set against a Paul Klee-inspired backdrop of shapes and colors, the precocious eight-year old Ramona’s world is revealed. Third grade is not fun, her older sister Beezus always gets her way, her dad loses his job and her beloved Aunt Bea is getting married and moving to Alaska. Ramona’s life, filled with the struggles of growing up and colored with serious grown-up themes of recession and unemployment, speaks to kids in a voice they can relate to and understand. Though her family is not perfect, she discovers they care deeply for her and together they face difficulties with spunk and humor. Director Craig says “the play points out that while being a grown up isn't easy, being a kid is not always a bed of roses!”

The Pima Community College Center for the Arts is located on West Campus at 2202 West Anklam Road, Tucson (just west of downtown). For ticket information contact the box office at 206-6986 or centerforthearts@pima.edu.

Tucson: National Premiere of Flicker, IndeFliks@the Alley, Beowulf Alley Theatre

National Premiere of Flicker

IndeFliks@the Alley

Beowulf Alley Theatre

Beowulf Alley Theatre launches IndeFliks@the Alley with the National Premiere of Flicker, a film by Aaron Hendren, Friday and Saturday, September 4th and 5th, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

Beowulf Alley Theatre, 11 South 6th Ave, between Broadway and Congress in Downtown Tucson, known for its high quality theatrical productions, has added screening equipment to its beautiful 95-seat air-conditioned theatre and is launching a series of Independent Film screenings.  The inaugural event is a national premiere of a new film by an accomplished independent filmmaker from Albuquerque, NM, Aaron Hendren (www.eggmurders.com).  Tickets are $12 at the door or online in advance at www.beowulfalley.org.  There will be a discussion with the Producer/Writer/Director, Aaron Hendren on Saturday, September 5th following the screening.

"It is a great example of the well-directed and acted independent slasher movie."

 - Buried.com

“Keep your friends close and your enemy’s shovel” is the tagline from Flicker, a horror movie opening in 10 cities across the United States, including Beowulf Alley in Tucson, Arizona.

Over the weekend of September 4th, Flicker will be screened in Tucson, Denver, Albuquerque, Paducah, Boise, Santa Fe, Portland, Brookline, Eugene and Hartford.

The trailer for Flicker has been one of the most popular of the summer on Apple.com.  Blending rock and roll, country and folk, the Flicker Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is heard around the world thanks to many stores including Amazon and iTunes.

Egg Murders Productions, LLC produced Flicker and is often met with some questions and puzzlement about the movie.  People want to know what it is and where it came from.  As Flicker is unlike the most recent National Treasure movie, and that lot, we tell people: “It’s not a sequel, a remake or based on a comic book.  You deserve it.”

Flicker centers on Pretty, a young woman on a camping vacation with her friends.  She awakens in her tent to find that her friends have disappeared in the middle of the night.  Keeping a flicker of hope alive, she searches for her missing friends while fighting the elements and the strange inhabitants of a desolate mountain town.

Flicker was written and directed by Aaron Hendren (The Faithful and the Foul, Hamlet) and stars actors from Terminator Salvation, Swing Vote, Easy Money and The Lost Room.  The music comes from The Bad Memories and Jimmy Deveney (of Horse Opera fame.)  Starring Katy Houska as Pretty, the cast is supported by Babak Tafti, Kate Schroeder, Abigail H. Blueher and Lauren Poole.

For more information, see www.beowulfalley.org.  To view the trailer, see www.eggmurders.com.

Public parking is available on the street at meters Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for 50 cents per half hour and FREE all other times including weekends.  The lot across the street from Beowulf Alley at Broadway and 6th Avenue is available FREE Monday through Friday after 3 p.m. and all weekend.  The City Garage at Pennington and Scott, just two blocks from the theatre, is secure with the first hour free, additional hours at $2 to a maximum of $8.

Beowulf Alley Theatre Company, a 501 (c)(3) organization, is committed to enriching the community and enhancing appreciation of the arts through the production of innovative, invigorating theatre and theatrical education with the highest standards for acting and production.  Equal and fair treatment will be provided to all participants regardless of race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, familial status and/or marital status.  Founded on the basis of dialogues with local theatre artists who wanted a permanent home to practice their craft, its intimate 95-seat theatre provides a facility that meets professional standards where performing artists, educators, and technicians can present their skills.  Because Beowulf Alley engages a talent and volunteer  pool that calls Tucson “home” for its productions, the Theatre is committed to helping grow a new generation of Tucson talent with its programs including education for adults and youth, late night theatre to experiment with and gain experience, readers theatre for playwrights’ unpublished works, lunchtime theatre to bring art to the workday and screenings of independent film artists.  And true to its roots, the Theatre maintains ongoing dialogues with the community, including Dialogues with theatergoers after the first Sunday matinee performance of each of its main stage plays, at Readers’ Theatre nights, and other presentations, providing an opportunity for theatergoers to discuss the plays with the director and artists.  Writers who cover the Tucson arts scene say the Theatre provides its audiences with “the best total package”—plays, performances and productions that are high in artistic and technical quality.  Beowulf Alley has received critical acclaim, including two Mac Awards and seven MAC nominations.  The company has presented over 325 performances to Tucson audiences since 2002 and has served hundreds of theatre artists.  The theater also provides performance and rehearsal space for other Tucson theater companies.  For more information, log on to www.beowulfalley.org.  We thank the National Endowment for the Arts, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Tucson Pima Arts Council, the Janet S. Comedy Improvisation - What a wonderful class to get you to think fast, think on your feet, loosen up your body, and how you move.  In this class, you're also taught dialects.  You don't have to be a "funny person" to do really well in this class, to have a fantastic time, and to learn a great deal.  Comedy improv isn’t half as hard as it looks when you learn it from a former Saturday Night Live cast member.  Anna gives you the keys: formats, dialects, and structure.  Come play, have a ball, and enjoy discovering how funny you can be.  Also, for acting students, studying comedy improv loosens up the body, helps you think fast on your feet, introduces dialects, and sharpens your timing.

4 consecutive Wednesday nights

$35 per week
(If you have to miss one of them, you just pay for it and then take class 5 free.)

Tucson: Crew Call, documentary film All Souls Procession/Calexico Concert

All Souls Procession/Calexico Concert Film (Downtown Tucson)

Date: 2009-08-24, 8:14PM MST
Reply to: douglas.biggers@gmail.com

Volunteers and possibly paid staff wanted for unique film project in November. The film is part concert-film (Calexico at the Rialto), part documentary about the 20th Annual All Souls Procession, with other thematic elements related to the collision of cultures that happen at the US/Mexico border, especially around our attitudes towards death. Looking for production assistants of all types, we need both brawn and brains and everything in between, grips, camera department help, carpenters, make-up, scenic artists, sound people, cooks, runners, researchers, etc. during the weekend of November 7/8.

The more experience you have making films the better, but if you have none, don't let that keep you from showing us what you got! This is a professional production with participation from industry professionals, but the budget is low, with proceeds to partially benefit the Rialto Theatre, Loft Cinema and Many Mouths One Stomach (organizers of the All Souls Procession). Put together a brief resume of your experience relevant to the project and come to a meeting at the Rialto Theatre on Tuesday, September 1 at 6:30 to learn more about volunteer and other opportunities.

Feel free to forward resumes or other info in advance of the meeting to douglas.biggers@gmail.com

Director - Danny Vinik

Over the last 2 decades, Danny Vinik has been involved with all aspects of Indie and Digital film production. Danny studied filmmaking at UCSC with Eli Hollander and at NYU with Jim Jarmusch. During the 90's Danny worked as director of digital development at Chris Hanley's Muse Films, during the production of among others, Buffalo 66, The Virgin Suicides, American Psycho, and Bully. In 2002, Danny created Brink Films and produced the drug comedy Spun starring Mickey Rourke, Jason Schwartzman and Britanny Murphy. Spun was shot in Super16 and scanned at high res to digital. Once in a digital state it was edited and then blown up to 35mm. Spun was one of the first feature films to be edited in high res, forgoing the traditional Avid low res edit and Edit Decision List (EDL) to cut the film, in favor of a completely Non-Linear (NLE) system where what you see is what you get. Spun is in the Guinness book of world records for the film with the most edits (over 5000).

Danny has been an online pioneer since the inception of the web, as we know it. He is widely credited with, if not inventing, at least perfecting, the cyberbar. He is a writer, film producer, nightclub promoter, film distributor and web developer. His novel BLUE PAIGE was published in 1999. He directed the critically respected documentary TV Party in 2005. His company BRINK MEDIA creates award winning web solutions and marketing campaigns for a wide variety of clients including Kevin Spacey's filmmaker's community site TriggerStreet.com, Christy Turlington and the country of Holland.

TTA List posting retraction

Dear TTA List Members,

I must have been brain-dead when I posted the announcement to meet “at the Duck Pond” with no reply-to address.  That does not meet my standards for posting on the TTA List.

Thanks to several members who have raised concerns.  I have removed it from the listserv and blog.

I don’t recommend it, but if you decide to go anyway, I’m curious to know what you find.  Drop me an email about it.

Best Regards,

Bill

Tucson: Casting Call, UofA thesis film titled "THE BIG JOB."

Principal Cast needed for Short Film (Western) (Tucson, AZ)

Date: 2009-08-24, 5:17PM MST
Reply to: gigantisaurus@gmail.com

Hello,

My name is Adam Valencia, I am a senior at the University of Arizona and I am currently in Pre-Production for my thesis film titled "THE BIG JOB."

It is a combination of both the modern psychological western and the brash, romantic western of the technicolor age. The story involves three cowboys on the hunt for a precious diamond hidden somewhere in the Arizona desert. It is very violent, very dark, and will hopefully be rather elegant. I am looking to shoot towards the end of October, in locations around Benson, Mescal, Patagonia, and Tucson.

Truth be told, I have a lot of ambition in me and am in need of a strong Cast that will help bring the script to life.

I am looking for:

A middle aged badass. The protganist, he is Conan meets Humphrey Bogart.

A middle aged world weary man. (See Dustin Hoffman in Papillon + Richard Dreyfuss in Jaws)

A young (mid 20's) gunslinger with something to prove.

An older desperate man. Grey hair, or salt and pepper.

A middle aged sheriff, whom is posing to be a sheriff. a liar. a fake. a rat. a sleuth. devilish.

A middle aged to older bad guy. The character says very little, but is intense and important.

I apologize for the broad and vague descriptions, however what I am casting for is essentially age, look, bad guys, good guys, and willingness to work hard on a low budget short.
Compensation is up in the air because I am in pre-production, however food, lodging, and transportation will all be covered.
I promise you, although this is a student film, it will be run like a professional set.

If you are interested, please contact me at: gigantisaurus@gmail.com

Headshot and resume is preferred, however any photo(s) that you could provide would be much appreciated.

Thank you so much, I hope to hear from you soon.

Best,

Adam Valencia
