What's happing at Borderlands Theater in 2021

Digital Desmadre Launch this Sunday!

Happy New Year,

from Borderlands!

Introducing a New Generation of Tucson Theatre Makers!

DIGITAL DESMADRE LAUNCH PARTY

Sunday, January 31 @ 7pm (MST)

on the Borderlands Facebook page

Tune in and meet the Digital Desmadre crew as they host a screening of four digital shorts created last fall. With cocktails and party games to keep it fun, the ensemble members of Digital Desmadre give brief introductions to each video. Mix up your own tasty cocktail and join us this Sunday!

Digital Desmadre was launched last fall as a NextGen project to nurture emerging Latinx performers and writers in Tucson through the creation of digital sketch comedy videos disseminated through social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. The project strategically uses humor to initiate dialogue around our most pressing issues.

Borderlands Theater Commissions Anita

Borderlands Theater is thrilled to announce the commissioning of Anita, a musical in the universe of Annie pero muy differente, very different. "A Latinx version of Annie was the starting point and then it became its own unique thing that speaks to today's audiences," says Milta Ortiz.

Milta Ortiz and Quetzal Guerrero incubated the idea for Anita at Arizona State University, thanks to a Mellon Projecting All Voices fellowship at Arizona State University, where Milta is currently a fellow. "We had a good time hashing out the plot, themes, and message of the play, talking about the music and lyrics. We complement each other well."

Borderlands Theater has now secured funding for the development team to see the project through a week-long developmental reading this fall.

Anita centers Latinx characters and culture, highlighting the sound of the Southwest border region with cumbias, boleros, and mariachi music. Bookwriter, Milta Ortiz, is excited to work with talented musician Quetzal Guerrero, as composer and lyricist. "We're having fun writing the script and lyrics, and vibing with the music. I hope it shows in the product."

In case you're wondering, here is a short synopsis: Anita, a spunky immigrant girl finds herself separated from her parents, yet remains hopeful and does everything she can to reunite with them. So much so that she ends up in the middle of a PR blitz for the "shelter", where she resides. She meets Luz Dorado, a career minded PR executive, who will do anything to make her client, John Panchez—the owner of the "shelters"—happy. The media and social media can't get enough of Anita's vibrant smile and curly brown hair, so Luz gets the idea to temporarily foster Anita, who really just wants her parents. This creates a situation that brings out the worst and best of people.

Saturday, 1/30

7:30pm
Family-Friendly Improv Comedy

Tonight's special guest team will be joining us from Phoenix AND L.A. We're pleased to welcome Jacque Arend & Xchel Hernandez - AKA MuChuChu!

Jacque Arend and Xchel Hernandez Zendejas have shared the stage for many years building amazing chemistry and trust. They both attended the iO Chicago Summer Intensive in 2005 and returned to Phoenix performing together immediately, by chance, as the myth is that Xchel would turn to stone if he made friends that summer. In 2006 the two of them, along with four other members, formed The Light Rail Pirates and performed and regularly rehearsed for a solid four years.

In 2012 through a substitution in a Cagematch at The Torch Theatre in Phoenix, MuChuChu was born. That summer, MuChuChu found its voice as a two-person Harold. Jacque & Xchel use high energy, strong commitment, and tons of risk-taking to achieve this lofty goal. Tonight, they are reunited thanks to the power of Zoom.

MuChuChu will perform as a team, and then join Rob, Jessica, Jon, Chris, Rosanne, David - & your host, Cy Barlow for family-friendly improv games and scenes.

Improve Your Life

With IMPROV! New Workshops & Classes!

Saturdays @ 10AM

Starting January 30
ImprovBlox: Characters & Spacework

Last Chance to Register!

ImprovBlox: Characters & Spacework starts THIS Saturday!

If you're ready to try something new in the world of improv, this class is gonna be your best bet!

Our very own Cy Barlow brings her talent from the stage into the (virtual) classroom. She'll guide you as you learn the building blocks for creating strong characters and dynamic worlds & helps you bring your improv to the next level!

Characters & Spacework is 7-week online course, adapted especially for Zoom! This session will be split into two topics:

Characters
You'll learn the building blocks for creating strong and memorable three-dimensional characters that can connect with scene partners and drive a successful scene.

Spacework
You'll learn tools to create a dynamic "physical" world that will propel you, your scene partners, and the audience into the center of your scene. Spacework is the essential language of great characters, group mind and successful scenes.

Instructor: Cy Barlow! Cy performs with Unscrewed Theater's Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed & From The Top and with Tucson's nerdiest steel drum band, Apocalypso. And for the next 7 weeks, Cy will teach you how to create strong, believable characters - and how to create a "physical" world with nothing but your movements...and maybe a folding chair.

Rollin' in Riches

February Online Workshops!

Sunday, 2/21 - Rolland Lopez Workshops
Sunday, 2/28 - Rich Baker Workshops

Rolland Lopez & Rich Baker (AKA improv duo Rollin' in Riches) are our special guest instructors for February! We love 'em for their comedy chops and their teaching skills -- and, of course, their willingness to be frequent guest stars at our Unscrewed Theater House Parties.

They'll be teaching two workshops (each!) on two Sundays this February. Register & learn more below!

Sunday, February 21
Rolland Lopez Workshops - only $40!
All times MST (Arizona)

The Magic of Patterns!
11am – 2pm.
Patterns are magical, but they won't appear on their own. In this workshop, you'll work on finding them, creating them, and how to have fun with them in your scenes. This is a really fun and powerful tool to have on your improv toolbelt!
Register: https://www.unscrewedtheater.org/event/lopez-patterns-2021-02-21/

Let's Focus on You!
3pm – 6pm.
Do you want a little bit of personal attention? You're center stage in this workshop, where you'll undergo an assessment to help pinpoint areas and help you take your improv to the next level.
Register: https://www.unscrewedtheater.org/event/lopez-you-2021-02-21/

Sunday, February 28
Rich Baker Workshops - only $30!
All times MST (Arizona)

Cut to Acceptance
11am – 1pm.
When we judge, argue, ignore, or flat out deny our scene partners, the show suffers. We know not to do this stuff, and yet it happens all the time, even amongst veteran performers. In this workshop, we'll sharpen and work those fundamental skills that allow us to skip all that and cut straight to acceptance.
Register: https://www.unscrewedtheater.org/event/baker-acceptance-2021-02-28/

Callbacks In Improv
2pm – 4pm.
You can turn a show from 'good' to 'outstanding' with even as little as one well-placed callback. In this masters-level workshop, you'll learn how to recognize and capitalize on those moments in a way that's both immensely satisfying and hilarious.
Register: https://www.unscrewedtheater.org/event/baker-callbacks-2021-02-28/

About the Instructors:

Rolland Lopez has been teaching and coaching improv for almost 5 years. He loves teaching, whether it's working with seasoned players or introducing Improv as a brand new concept to beginners.

His core tenets when teaching is to fully encourage while helping to guide and push students one small step outside of their comfort zone. Students have to reach but it's within their grasp and that way, learning, and incorporation of concepts can be easily done.

The exercises in his workshops are created with the real world (or stage) in mind. Players walk away being able to immediately use the concepts introduced the next time they're on stage.

He is currently a faculty member at the Westside Comedy Theatre and is based in Los Angeles. He's available to coach throughout the city as well as online and can also come to your town!

Rich Baker is author of the book Improv Made Easier and host/creator of the podcast Improv Breakdown. He first fell in love with improv in 1999 in his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. Since then, he's performed all over the country with The Second City, ComedySportz Chicago, Mission Improvable, and his festival headlining duo with Rolland Lopez, Rollin' In Riches. Rich directed the award-winning web series Third Shift for Stronger Entertainment. Follow him @RichBakerCoaching on IG & @Richbakercoaching on Facebook.

We have a new President, Bernie has already provided us with the meme of the year, people are getting vaccinated, and it's raining in Tucson!  Waiting to exhale and I feel like we all finally did.  So to keep your spirits bright we have Your Favorite Movie Improvised Friday night at 7pm, bringing the funny on our Facebook Live.  Gosh I can't wait to get back to Roadhouse Cinemas and eat some of that delicious popcorn, but until that day, let TIM bring you a cinematic experience.  You tell us your favorite movie, our performers will improvise it for you in about 25 minutes, even if they've never seen it before.  All you need to do is bring the popcorn.

It looks like it will be a bit longer until we can get back to in-person action at the theater.  As we are still paying rent on the space, we do need your help to keep our organization afloat until we can start the guffaws in person.  We have set a goal of raising $500 a month through Digital Edition Tickets. We brought in $75 last week, and would love any support you have, every little bit helps.

We are ready to rock some classes starting soon with a mix of socially distant in-person and virtual classes.  There are only TWO spots left in our upcoming Improv 101 class starting on Tuesday, February 16th.  So if you are interested, grab your spot today.  We also have classes in Sketch and Stand Up coming up, so make your 2021 funnier with a class at TIM!

Saturdays @ 10AM

Starting January 30
ImprovBlox: Characters & Spacework

Improvise from the comfort of your very own home!

ImrovBlox: Characters & Spacework is a 7-week course that will help you delve a little bit deeper into some more advanced improv techniques.
