TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television (TFTV) presents the 19th edition of I DREAM IN WIDESCREEN, the annual showcase of senior thesis films made by emerging filmmakers graduating from the School's nationally ranked Film & Television program. The showcase is Saturday, May 4, 7pm, at the Fox Tucson Theatre.

"This year's films include an abundance of creative and delightful comedies," says TFTV's Film & Television Production head Jacob Bricca, ACE. "I'm convinced that Zach Hearst's Freakout is going to have people rolling in the aisles, and Preston Kersting's In the Market is so spot on with its take on AI that you will laugh and cry at the same time — and and that's just scratching the surface of the great stuff we have in store."

"There are also some really delicious films that tread into horror territory, like Mira Pike's Lovesick and Kat Kones' Wandered Away. There's not one film that doesn't try something new."

Local audiences may recognize an eclectic range of Arizona locations. A lovelorn waiter casts a spell in Tucson's retro diner Little Anthony's. An Indiana Jones-style adventure takes place in San Xavier Underground Laboratory. And the bucolic Sonoita Creek in Patagonia is the scene for an eerie encounter between strangers. All films will compete for jury prizes. This year's jurors include actor and TFTV alum Vinessa Vidotto (FBI: International, Hacks), writer/director and Tribeca Festival programmer Cedar Sherbert, and Jeff Yanc, program director at the Loft Cinema, the nationally-recognized independent art house cinema.

Films that premiere at I Dream in Widescreen regularly go on to be selected to screen at film festivals nationally and internationally, providing invaluable industry exposure for the emerging filmmakers.

Several films from 2023 are currently making waves on the film festival circuit including Anna Gabriella Agosto's Light Up Lulu and Myles Gordon's The Rematch, both of which were official selections of the Los Angeles International Children's Film Festival at WonderCon. Zack Richardson's film The Rise of Ronnie won Best Mockumentary at the Atlanta Comedy Film Festival, and this week A Man's Man by Jacob Robinson is screening at the Arizona International Film Festival. And Tatum Sailors, who won the I Dream in Widescreen 2023 Cinematography award for her work on Unconditional, recently signed for representation with Zero Gravity Management.

Anna Agosto, Myles Gordon, and Ryan Ramsey at LAICFF at WonderCon.

I DREAM IN WIDESCREEN will screen in person at the Fox Tucson Theatre (17 W Congress Street Tucson) on Saturday May 4 at 7:00pm. Tickets are $5 general admission and can be purchased via the I DREAM IN WIDESCREEN website. From May 5 through 20, the program will be available to view online for free at TFTV's YouTube channel.

The IDIWS2024 line-up is as follows:

THE ROGUE THEATRE TURNS TO SHAKESPEARE FOR ITS SPRING PRO-DUCTION, CLEARING THE COURTLY DECKS FOR THAT CLASSIC, "LOVE'S LABORS LOST"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

In this early Shakespeare comedy, its the ladies who have the last word. They are, from left, Chelsea Bowdren, Bryn Booth, Carley Elizabeth Preston and Sophie Gibson-Rush.

Of all William Shakespeare's comedies, “Love's Labor's Lost” must have the most playful language. Not just in its unexpected puns and sly synonyms but also in the rhythms of each actor's conversations.

The Rogue Theatre's new production of this merriment, directed by Joseph McGrath, vibrates to the rolling beat of words spaced out and shifted in their pronunciation, often followed by chopped phrases that fill with trills of exhilaration.

If you could add disco lighting and a thumping bass beat it would fit right in.

This being one of the Bard's early comedies, he is exploring the possibilities of language by expanding and elaborating on intricate twists of literary meaning, a distinction of style that would become one of his trademarks. Such as saying, for example, “Let love be a force, but don't force my love...” (not a quote but my own homespun example).

According to program notes, the play is set “In the year 1586 or perhaps 1587” when Ferdinand, King of Navarre (Aaron Shand) and three friends meet up with the Princess of France (Carly Elizabeth Preston) and three of her elegant companions.

Another friend of the court is Don Armado (Matt Walley) who gets a bright red costume and several animated speeches adding colorful zip to the plot.

Among those three princely pals of Ferdinand, it is Berowne (Ryan Parker Knox) who is the most dramatic.

Seeking to purify the quality of their lives, the King, Berowne and their courtly buddies Longaville (Jeffrey Baden) and Dumaine (Robert Anthony Peters) swear to devote the next three years of their lives to academic study – and to eschew all contact with any females of any sort.

What could possibly go wrong with this plan?

Quicker than you could say “Besmirch me not!” the Princess of France appears on the scene with her lovely entourage of Rosaline (Bryn Booth), Maria (Chelsea Bowdren) and Katherine (Sophie Gibson-Rush).
Suddenly these idealistic men of the King's court are having hilarious second thoughts about their oath of purity and – of course – quickly start hatching some desperate schemes.

Love letters are passed around. The ladies, getting into their own spirit of fun, hope to confuse the men by donning various disguises.

Shakespeare, always eager to stir the pot more generously, also adds a play within the play that involves humorous swords and shields.

Not to be outdone, the men disguise themselves as macho Russian dancers, performing outrageous steps choreographed by the Rogue's own Claire Hancock.

However, the play's ending does seem to imply more of a warning than a celebration. These women have the last word saying, if the men are sincere about their promises, they will come back same time next year.

“Love's Labor's Lost” runs through May 5 with performances Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., matinees Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m., at The Rogue Theatre, 300 E. University Blvd. Tickets are $47 general admission; student rush tickets, when available, are $15 with student ID. The running time is two hours 25 minutes including a 10-minute intermission.

ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY GOES FOR THE REAL ARTIST'S ULTIMATE EFFORT TO REACH FOR THOSE DEEPEST, TRUEST DECLARATIONS IN ACHIEVING THE PUREST EXPRESSION OF THEIR TALENT

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

From left, Manny the accompanist (Walter "Bobby" McCoy), Maria Callas (Vicki Lewis) and Sophie the student (Rachel Gold) in a tense search for artistic truth.

We the audience are sitting in on a master class conducted by famed soprano Maria Callas. Noted playwright Terrence McNally (“Ragtime,” “Love! Valor! Compassion!”), a professed opera buff, drew on similar classes Callas conducted at the Juilliard School in the early 1970s to write his Tony award winning “Master Class,” named the Best Play of 1996.

Now the Arizona Theatre Company is running “Master Class,” directed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge, with Broadway and Carnegie Hall artist Vicki Lewis as Callas, who is most certainly remembered for her fiery spirit.

ATC audiences can be assured they don't need to know anything about opera – or about Callas, for that matter – to be drawn into the deeply layered intensity of McNally's “Master Class.”

The playwright is more interested in showing how the most talented artists of every discipline must indeed work harder and dig deeper than those more exceptional artists who are content enough to be merely great.

Just as Spider-Man reminds us, “To those whom much has been given, much is expected, ” Callas is eager to enforce that relentless desire for more.

These emotions, the very tensions between Callas and each of her students, becomes a true contest of wills that ultimately strips away the teacher's own lifetime grip on her defense mechanisms.

Lewis herself is smaller in stature but fills the stage with her uncompromising confidence. She swirls and demands, insisting three of her students accept nothing less than complete sacrifice for their art.

The students are: Sophie (Rachel Gold), a shy soprano whose voice seems stronger than her personality; Sharon (Kanisha Marie Feliciano), a more defiant soprano eager to stand for what she believes; Tony (Victor Ryan Robertson), still defining for himself that unique quality for which all tenors are known.

All three have more than met their match in Callas. But the playwright also knows all true artistic greatness must come from within the ordinary experiences everyone shares, the same hunger for love, praise and admiration.

So as Callas keeps asking her students for more, she keeps being reminded of her own life's past, her own heartbreak and frustrating experiences chasing elusive moments of happiness.

Adding classroom atmosphere are Walter “Bobby” McCoy as Manny the accompanist, playing a magnificently grand piano, and Trent Mills as a nameless stagehand who keeps bringing Callas more glasses of water.

“Master Class” runs through March 23 with performances at various times Wednesdays through Sundays in the downtown Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. Tickets are $25-$90. For details and reservations, visit atc.org or phone 833-282-7328 (833-ATC-SEAT)
