Tucson: Casting: My Bittersweet Admiration

-----Original Message-----
From: nmmontes@email.arizona.edu [mailto:nmmontes@email.arizona.edu]
Sent: Wednesday, September 28, 2005 7:32 PM
Subject: Casting: My Bittersweet Admiration

Hi all! My name is Nickolas Montes and I am casting actors for My
Bittersweet Admiration with auditions on the weekend October 8th and 9th
from 12pm thru 5pm each day. The place of the open auditions will be at the
University of Arizona at the Harvill building room 208.

My Bittersweet Admiration explores a young man moving into a new stage of
his life, the "college years". He is an orphan and has been living in the
same foster home since he was 13. As a product of the "system" all Ronny can
do is bitterly cling to "hope" of a better life. Just before his departure
Ronny discovers a sense of belonging to something he had all but given up
on, family.

Characters:

Ronny- (18 years old)
Has been an orphan all his life. Has lived in three different foster homes.
He has been living with Amy for nearly 6 years and is now leaving for
college.
This character is of subtlety. Much of his emotion is internal. Ronny is a
compassionate character but, isn't above selfishness.

Amy- (middle aged)
Widowed and lonely. She is a loving mother figure that rules her humble
foster home by the book. Her duties to the teenagers come first.

Janet- (17 years old)
Has been living in foster care since she was 10. The product of a drug
addicted single parent family Janet still communicates with a mother whom
acts like a daughter. Janet is a very aware character. She has been living
with Ronny and Amy for nearly 5 years. Considers Ronny to be a big brother
but is actually his superior acting as his conscience at times.

Leo- (14 years old)
the newest edition to Amy's foster home having only been living there about
10 months. A child of an abusive family Leo has found peace within these
new walls especially being under the wing of role model Ronny.

Again I am casting actors for My Bittersweet Admiration with auditions on
the weekend October 8th and 9th from 12pm thru 5pm each day. The place of
the open auditions will be at the University of Arizona at the Harvill
building room 208.

If you would like a copy of the script or have any further questions email
me
at: nmmontes@email.arizona.edu

Thanks again and hope to see you soon!!!

FW: Call For Directors/Actors Play In A Day

From: TheJunkyardDiva@aol.com [mailto:TheJunkyardDiva@aol.com]

Subject: Call For Directors/Actors Play In A Day

Old Pueblo Playwrights announces the upcoming 4th Annual Play In A Day  event Friday/ Saturday, November 4 & 5, 2005 at The Historic Y auditorium, 300 E. University.

We start on Friday with staged readings of 5 short plays written by Old Pueblo Playwrights members.   We draw the writer's names (who come to us from anywhere in Arizona) from a hat on Friday and send them to their rooms to produce 10 minute plays which directors and actors rehearse Saturday and present to the audience as staged readings on Saturday night.  On Saturday, the audience chooses best play and a panel of  judges from Tucson's theatre community choose their favorite.  Both choices are awarded a cash prize.  This is interactive theatre at it's most original.

We need Directors and Actors who want to accept the challenge of showing up early Saturday morning to direct and act in these 10 minute masterpieces.  The plays are randomly assigned and the actors are selected by the directors based solely on type or sex called for.  No auditions.  If you think you are up to the challenge we want you!  The commitment is all day Saturday November 5th until performances are over and the prizes are awarded.  Directors call is 8AM/ Actors should arrive by 9AM.  The plays are presented as staged readings so no memorizing required.  Contact Autrey at TheJunkyardDiva@aol.com or (520)615-1180.

Subject: PRESS RELEASE: Play In A Day 2005

Old Pueblo Playwrights announces the upcoming 4th Annual Play In A Day  event Friday/ Saturday, November 4 & 5, 2005 at The Historic Y auditorium, 300 E. University.  Doors open at 7PM with performances at 7:30 PM both nights.  Tickets are $12.00 per person which includes both nights.  There is a discount to $10.00 each for parties of 10 or more.  Contact Autrey at 615-1180 or email TheJunkyardDiva@aol.com for ticket reservations.

Play In A Day is the yearly madcap theatre event where the audience votes on Friday which props must be used in all six plays developed overnight by randomly paired playwrights from Arizona.  They also write lines and the one they vote in must be used as well.  This has produced some hilarious results in years past and this year should be no exception!

We start on Friday with staged readings of 5 short plays written by Old Pueblo Playwrights members and the aforementioned audience input.  We then draw the writer's names from a hat and send them to their rooms to produce 10 minute plays which directors and actors rehearse Saturday and present to the audience as staged readings on Saturday night.  On Saturday, the audience chooses best play and a panel of  judges from Tucson's theatre community choose their favorite.  Both choices are awarded a cash prize.  This is interactive theatre at it's most original.

We attract playwrights from Phoenix to Tubac and Old Pueblo Playwrights is honored to host this Tucson tradition.  Information on the Friday line-up of plays or interview information may be found by contacting Autrey at (520) 615-1180/ TheJunkyardDiva@aol.com.

The Invisible Theatre will present the World Premiere Staged Reading of CLOUDS IN HEAVEN, starring TV, theatre and film star Kathy Garver and Tucson’s own Jack Neubeck.  CLOUDS IN HEAVEN tells the story of Laura Bridgman, the first deaf, mute and

blind girl to learn language in the mid 19th century and the man who discovered her, Dr. Samuel Howe.

This evocative and poetic play is drawn from memoirs, diaries and personal recollections.

Most fondly remembered for her starring role as “Cissy” in the long running CBS prime time television hit, Family Affair, Kathy Garver has garnered critical acclaim in movies, stage, radio, voice over animation and audio book narration.  Her voice has been heard in Apollo 13 (which was awarded the Academy Award for Sound), Ransom, Backdraft and Jingle all the Way – all directed by Ron Howard.  Her Beatrix Potter tapes have sold over a million copies. Ms. Garver has also won two Audie Awards, one for her narration of The World’s Shortest Stories, the other in 2004 for her direction of Amy Tan in “The Opposite of Fate, read by the author.  Today Kathy

is an accomplished and versatile actress, appearing in such films as Sweet November, The Princess Diaries, Seizing Me, Black August and Held Together and has electrified the talk show circuit entertaining audiences with tales of her life long career in show business.

After 20 years and 2500 performances on Broadway, including the original companies of EVITA and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, Jack Neubeck moved to Tucson in 1986 and continues to perform throughout the community. One of his favorite performances is ONCE AND FOREVER - a musical tribute to Irving Berlin, which was conceived and written with Susan Claassen and Jeff Haskell.  His most recent production was playing the part of Howard Liszt in MESHUGGAH-NUNS!

Harry Clark, cellist and playwright, has been described by the NY Times as “a first rate cellist, the sort who can make his instrument interesting for anybody.”  As a playwright, his work was recently extolled as “an extraordinary interweaving of music and biography…his work has passion, joy and mystery exhibiting exceptional unity and sensitivity,” (Hartford Courant) and the Arizona Daily Star states:  “From his mighty pen he has inked a classical music program that’s both inviting and exhilarating for the learned and ignorant ear alike.”  As playwright, Mr. Clark has had the great fortune to create original work for such luminaries as Jill Clayburgh, Theodore Bikel, Edward Herrmann, Barbara Feldon, Hayley Mills, Harvey Fierstein, Sandy Duncan, Michael Learned, Lynn Redgrave and more.  Some of the twenty-five Portraits appear on CD’s (sold on Amazon.com), and are presented throughout America on Public Radio International.  Currently, Clark is collaborating with renowned composer Libby Larsen on an original musical theatre piece for the 2005/06 season, Mesmeric Mozart.

CLOUDS IN HEAVEN is produced by Susan Claassen and presented, in part, through the generous support of Alexandra Jupin and John Bean and the Tucson Pima Arts Council.

Call the Invisible Theatre at (520) 882-9721, Tuesday through Friday from 10-4 for reservations and ticket information or stop by the office at 1400 N. First Avenue (at Drachman).

TREATMENT:

Robert, a neuroscientist, has been given the chance to take part in an
experiment that may prove conclusively that humans are able to be
reincarnated into another body. Robert is not only interested
scientifically but personally. His wife, suffering from a brain injury and
dying, has provided the team with the first human subject to test their
theory of reincarnation. As Robert wrestles with the implications that this
discovery presents, the team identifies the potential host of his wife's new
soul and more importantly, a way to reawaken the identity of his wife in
this newborn child. Robert races to site of the projected birth in a
selfish attempt to revive the consciousness of his wife, blind to the
meaning behind this discovery for the rest of humanity. In the end, Robert
grows as a person, but still misses the far-ranging implications of this
knowledge and its potential to unify human beings around the world.

One male actor needed for PLAY READING at Old Pueblo Playwrights on Monday night Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. The playwrights meet at the Temple of Music, 330 S. Scott, (downtown Tucson) upstairs behind the Cabaret.

The character of TED is in his mid- 20's. He is an eager computer nerd who is  somewhat socially innocent and gauche. He is taking acting lessons and the teacher encourages him to try Hamlet and Henry Higgins from selected scenes of Hamlet and Pygmalion. But most of the rehearsal with the teacher and later with his female roommate involves a romantic relationship.

This is a table reading, meaning we read the play and then discuss the script. No rehearsal is planned. If you are interested, contact Jack Frakes on e-mail at jfrakes82@earthlink.net or call  520- 321-0442. I can arrange to get a script to you.

Live Theatre Workshop’s
ETCETERA, Late Night Series presents

Fuddy Meers
By David Lindsay-Abaire

Claire suffers from a rare form of psychogenic amnesia and her memory is erased every time she falls asleep.  This morning she wakes up, as usual, relying on strangers to tell her who she is.

But who should she believe?

The limping, half deaf, half blind man in a ski mask who crawls from under her bed?  The man in a stolen suit with a foul mouthed hand puppet?  The woman who is apparently her mother, a recent stroke victim who talks gibberish?  Her clean cut husband with a shady past?  Or the perpetually stoned angry kid who she finds out is her son?

Dark, hilarious, poignant and brutal, we follow Claire’s day as she gradually deciphers her life in this brilliant comedy.

Directed by Nicole Stein

Starring
Jodi Rankin, Christian Armstrong, Stephen Frankenfield,
Kristi Loera, Holli Henderson, Steve McKee and Sean Marbry

The show runs October 14 - November 5, 2005

MONEY RAISED AT MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19th PREVIEW PERFORMANCE

TO BENEFIT SOUTHERN REP THEATRE COMPANY IN NEW ORLEANS

The Invisible Theatre is joining organizations across our nation in raising much needed funds to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.   We are pleased to announce that the preview performance on September 19th of DEAD CERTAIN – a mystery thriller written by Marcus Lloyd - will be designated as a special benefit performance with all proceeds going to help Southern Rep in New Orleans.

Southern Rep, a professional, non profit theatre located in New Orleans, was devastated by Katrina and its aftermath.  They hope to rebuild, and their goal is to raise funds to survive this transition and to become a major part of the cultural scene that drives the new New Orleans.

This benefit performance will be at the Invisible Theatre (1400 N. First Avenue,

at Drachman) on Monday, September 19, at 7:30 pm. Ticket price is $16.

Call 520-882-9721 for reservations.

Agencies affiliated with the Tucson evacuees that know individuals who would like to see a performance of this mystery thriller as our guests are asked to call our box office  (882-9721) for further information.  The show runs from September 19 to October 9th.

DEAD CERTAIN, starring Maedell Dixon and Max Bird-Ridnell, directed by Susan Claassen and written by Marcus Lloyd, tells the story of an out-of-work actor once on the verge of stardom, a theatre-obsessed ex-dancer now wheelchair-bound and a large isolated country house – all of which combine to be the ingredients in this psychological thriller!  What does fate have in store for them both?  The suspense builds towards a gripping climax, where truth and illusion become entangled in a real life game of cat and mouse.

“DEAD CERTAIN is an entertaining psychological diversion…”

-Monterey Weekly

Please Note:  The Seminar Night for DEAD CERTAIN will now be following the Wednesday, October 5th performance.

- Samuel French

The smash comedy hit of London and Broadway comes to the LTW stage. Writer Charles Condomine (Jonathan Northover)

Tucson: Casting SCAM Alert

RE: Everyday Looking People For Movie Extra Work

Dear TTA List Members,

I try to screen most of what goes on the list.  Occasionally a bad apple slips through.  "Global Entertainment" is a known scam.  When you call the phone number given the machine says, "Thank you for calling Global Entertainment..."  They have many different phone numbers.

If you get through, you will be directed to a website where you will be told you have to pay $139.00. (You should never have to pay for this kind service. Legitimate companies make their money from commissions collected from the productions themselves.)

Please do not waste your time responding to the announcement sent on September 7 (copy below).

A special thanks to "Anne", the TTA List member who brought this to my attention.

Best Regards,

Bill
