Casting Call: Actress 45-65, UA student short

From: Evan Colten [mailto:evcolten@gmail.com]
Sent: Tuesday, September 29, 2015 7:15 PM
Subject: Casting Notice For Sharing

My name is Evan Colten and I'm a film student at the University of Arizona. I'm currently in the process of shooting a short film with my co-director Max Cunningham

The film is a parody on old school Film-Noirs from the 1940s and 50s, and it's called John.  The project is independent from the school, and we have already shot for two weekends earlier this summer. The character we're interested in casting is Gloria Everly: she's a strong, smart woman (45-65) who runs a group of retirement homes, and is a key point in the film's plot.

The days the actor would be needed are October 10th and 11th for filming.

Attached is a a short side for all potential actors can read if they're interested along with our Indiegogo promotional video, so people can get an idea of the tonality we're going for.  My contact information is evcolten@gmail.com and (480) 748-0827.

Tuesday's IFA Future of Film Meeting

Sent: Sunday, September 27, 2015 900 PM
Subject: Tuesday's IFA Future of Film Meeting

IFA meets of the first Tuesday of every month at at 7 PM at Connect,33 South Fifth Avenue in Tucson.  The following is the schedule for the next three meetings (which will be the last three meetings of the year).

October 6.  The Future of Film. Equipment, Production, and Distribution.  Being an independent film producer is dramatically different today than it was even 10 years ago.  High definition 4K digital cameras, low energy use battery operated lights, professional quality editing and post production software, huge reductions in the cost of computer hardware (you can get 2TB drives at Costco for about $100), distribution through Netflix, Amazon Prime and a host of internet on demand sites.  The future of low cost independent filmmaking is now -- be part of the discussion about how you can be part of it.

November 3.  The Actor's Meeting. A panel of experienced actors and acting instructors will discuss theory and techniques with an emphasis on a comparison of acting for film vs acting for theater.

December 1.  Holiday Party and Board Elections.  Do you want to be on the 2016 IFA Board of Directors?  Send an e-mail expressing your interest to independentfilmarizona@gmail.com.

THE WIZARDLY TRIUMPH OF "HENRY PORTER"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Big hair was very important to the mythic forces in play at the Gaslight Theatre.

After having its way with “Star Wars,” the Gaslight Theatre gang now turns its attention across the pond to England's own iconic fantasy adventurer, Harry Potter.

But just to ensure there is no confusion, at the Gaslight this spunky lad is known as Henry Porter.

As in “Henry Porter and the Sorcerer's Secret” playing through Nov. 8 (sometimes several times daily). Those steeped in the lore of Pottermania (you know who you are) will appreciate the attention to detail in Peter Van Slyke's script and stage direction.

An extra-large cast with several players taking more than one role makes it possible for this production to cover lots of ground. Act One provides all the back story on Henry's remarkable origins off-planet and his prophesied destiny, his need to grow up safe from evil forces by hiding out with a human family (not much different from being raised by wolves, it seems) and finally becoming 18, when he receives a written invitation – delivered by a raven – to attend wizard school at the Frogwaits Magical Academy.

Act Two finds Henry new on campus, donning the school's Selecting Hat that assigns first-year students to one of the traditional Houses, meeting his blond-haired student nemesis Gregor Belfry, learning and then winning at the flying broomstick game of Gringwich and feeling a special connection to one of the girl-type wizards, McKenzie Skinner.

For those keeping score at home, Ron Weasley doesn't have a counterpart in the Henry Porter version. Ron is represented briefly as a cardboard cut-out, but you must look quickly to catch him.

And since this is a Gaslight tribute, there must be a Happy Gaslight Ending. All those elaborate machinations of the evil forces led by Zlandagor are smooshed up to create one big, satisfying finale.

Most of the songs come from the 1960s and 1970s, another magical time in many quarters, mixed with some enthusiastic blues numbers. The showstopper is buxom Aunt Prunella's very bouncy “I'm A Woman” played alternatively by Mike Yarema and Jake Coffin.

The aftershow olio only brings the audience back to Earth just a little bit, turning to the Muppet Show for inspiration. Kermit the Frog has an ongoing role, though Miss Piggy's part is much smaller. Elton John is one of the special guests and, as for the jokes: “If Yoko Ono married Sonny Bono, her name would be Yoko Ono Bono.”

"Henry Porter and the Sorcerer's Secret” continues through Nov. 8, with performances at various times Tuesdays through Sundays at the Gaslight Theatre, 7010 E. Broadway. Reservations are a must. Tickets are $18.50 adults; $16.50 seniors, students, military; $8.50 children 12 and under. For details and reservations, 886-9428, or visit www.thegaslighttheatre.com

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This class series is for teen actors with a desire to train like professionals.   We will work on the building blocks of strong performance, beginning with the actor's 'state of being.'  A relaxed body and a quiet mind gives the actor clarity, brilliant creativity, and freedom of impulse in rehearsal and performance, which leads to undeniable presence and power.  This alone is often the difference between a good performance and great one, or a good audition and one that gets you the job.

Along with some improvisation, we'll work on scripted material from plays and films, and on monologues.  Our scene work will be done collaboratively, like in a good rehearsal process, while script analysis and acting technique is taught.

Our work on monologues will be approached as preparation for monologue auditions.  Auditioning with monologues is an art form, and given that it's often required to get the job, it deserves special attention.  As a director who has cast many actors over the years, and coached many successful auditions, I have a strong sense for what makes an audition work and I look forward to sharing it with you!

"Steve opens the doors wide to imaginative choices and trusting your own impulses.  He has so much insight and clarity.  It's a game-changer; he gave my process wings."

-Harris Kendall, actress -  "600 Millas," opposite Tim Roth, 10 years - "Days of Our Lives"

"In a few months with Steve, I went from having absolutely no actor training to being accepted into one of the top college programs in the country - with scholarships."

-Andrew Gleckler, Performing Arts Student, Elon University

"Steve helped me to grow as an actor in ways I could not have ever imagined.  I owe much gratitude and affection to Steve..."

-Kyle Dignoti, Theatre Student, University of Arizona

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Steve Anderson earned his MFA in Acting in 1991, performed in off-Broadway and regional theatre venues, and has been training actors for many years.  He has been a guest artist at Clemson University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and others.  Steve conducts acting workshops for adults and teens, and offers private coaching for actors and directors.  He is the director of Teen Street Films, an actor training program for teens that creates original short films.  Steve recently directed the feature film, Lucky U Ranch, currently in post production, and will be directing the short film, The Private Life of Teachers this December in Phoenix as well as two feature films beginning late next year.

CDO Advanced Theatre presents And A Child Shall Lead, by Michael Slade

FELDER LOVES THE LOYALTY OF IRVING BERLIN

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Hershey Felder and his piano become Irving Berlin for Arizona Theatre Company.

Has the pendulum of cynicism finally swung too far to the left? You may be inclined to think so watching the Arizona Theatre Company's sentimental and patriotic production of “Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin.”

Especially when the audience begins to sing along, not once but twice (at least) to songs that have become such an essential element of the fabric of what it means to be an American.

Few artist's talents were so perfectly matched to the times as Berlin, born Israel Isidore Beilin, in Russia on May 11, 1888. Fleeing the anti-Jewish pogroms of Tsar Nicholas II in 1893, his family reached Ellis Island and made their home in a Manhattan basement flat with no windows. The lad was five.

As his only asset was a pleasant singing voice, he was busking on the street before he was 10. This experience would shape his creative life: composing simple melodies to touch the hearts of ordinary people, as he described it.

When the United States plunged with chest-thumping vigor into World War I, enjoyed the brief euphoria of victory in the 1920s and then endured society's collapse during the Great Depression, Irving Berlin was right there writing the songs that matched the times.

Devoted to the principles of democracy and the American way of life, dedicated to his wife and family, Berlin's resume would eventually include 232 songs that made the Top 10 on national charts – 25 of those hits would go on to Number One.

Many of them receive a spotlight performance in the ATC production written and performed by Felder. His one-person revue is directed by Trevor Hay.

ATC regulars will remember Felder's stage portrayal from a few years back of another iconic composer from the same period, in the tribute “George Gershwin Alone.”

As the music of Irving Berlin is far more accessible than Gershwin, so is this show. We all know the story of the Jewish guy who wrote “White Christmas,” but may not know the song came to him on a warm day when he was sitting in a sunny La Quinta, California, deck chair remembering snowy Christmases back east.

Wikipedia reminds us there is also the story that Berlin wrote “White Christmas” while staying at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. Thank goodness, Felder didn't include that version.

The other pillar of American pop culture that Berlin composed was sung by Kate Smith, and continues to be a nominee for our national anthem, “God Bless America.” At the beginning of both songs, Felder only had to play a few piano notes and the audience was singing along.

Audience members are encouraged to sing along on any other favorites, as well.

The showcase set-up, performed in a homey living room setting with a piano, has Berlin reminiscing about his life (he lived to be 101) as a younger man, telling stories and singing his songs in general chronological order. But just the highlights, of course. With so many staples of the Great American Song Book to account for, he performs one medley that has at least a dozen songs. He sings just a few words of each, knowing everyone will recognize the melody.

“Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin” continues through Oct. 4, with performances at various times Tuesdays through Sundays, at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. Tickets are $23-$68. For details and reservations, 622-2823, or visit www.arizonatheatre.org.
