It's a Stand Up Weekend at TIM

This Friday at 9 pm, we have local stand up comedian Matt Ziemak telling stories for the Soap Box. Matt was a finalist in the 2016 Arizonas Funniest Comedian contest presented by the Tempe Improv, and the winner of KLPX's Laugh Off of in Tucson, as well as been a featured performer at Flyover Comedy Festival in St. Louis, Bird City Comedy Festival and the Big Pine Comedy Festival. Matt's comedy draws you in with it's sweet outer shell and keeps you hooked with it's inner grittiness. Kinda like a crispy M&M.

Starting on Sunday, July 8th, TIM's super popular Stand Up 101 class is back.  Taught by Mo Urban, this class will take you from the couch to a stand up set in just 6 weeks.  Gain confidence, learn stage presence, and make some friends while you're at it.  Register today! https://www.tucsonimprov.com/classes/stand-up-101-intro-to-stand-up-comedy

Taste of Improv Class

The Studio for Actors is now offering a "Taste of Improv Class." Here's how it works. Just come on one Wednesday night from 6:30pm-8:00pm for only $30. This class is normally $40, but for the evenings of  July 14 and July 26, you can attend for $30 for one class only, and see how much you love studying improv at The Studio. So, if you've always wondered (or if you've never wondered) if you would enjoy comedy improv, this is your chance to check it out.

Call (520) 881-2363 to sign up.  To qualify for the discounted price, you must say the words "Taste of Improv Class" when you call.

* Limit one $30 class per person.

Comedy Improvisation

You don't have to be a funny person to love and get a lot out of a comedy improv class. I can make you funny. Because you have to focus in this class, you can end up taking a vacation from the stuff that goes on in your life, and there's a lot of healing with laughter. Your coach is a former Saturday Night Live cast member, and will give you the accents and the formats you can use as a "safety net." Improv is a great stress reliever and really encourages the ability to verbally communicate. So, come, play, have a ball, and enjoy releasing your own special creativity.

Also, for students of acting, improv enhances your auditions, loosens up the body, helps you think fast on your feet, introduces dialects, and sharpens your timing.4 consecutive Wednesday nights

6:30pm-8:00pm
Start on any Wednesday (but you should call first to sign up).
$40 per week
Don't worry if you have to miss one or even two of the four classes. You simply pay for the class you have to miss and then take class #5 free.  It's even possible to pay $160 at your first class, and then take your last three classes whenever you can make it. (I keep great records.)

To find out more or to sign up, please call Anna Risley at (520) 881-2363.

Arizona Onstage Productions: LAST CALL - Male actors for HAND TO GOD

From: Kevin Johnson <kjohnson.stage@gmail.com>
Sent: Friday, June 15, 2018 1:59 PM
Subject: LAST CALL - Male actors for HAND TO GOD

Arizona Onstage Productions is currently looking for extremely strong actors for the Broadway hit HAND TO GOD, a VERY dark comedy by Robert Askins and directed by Kevin Johnson. The production will run from August 10-26 at the Playhouse, 1881 N. Oracle..  Actors need to be able to be comfortable with extreme profanity, violence, puppet sex, and overall shock values.  The New York Times says that HAND TO GOD is "The Muppets meet the Exorcist". Rehearsals will start in late June.  All artists will receive an honorarium.  Please email resume and headshot (if available) as well as the character of interest to the Artistic Director at kjohnson.stage@gmail.com  He will send you a file with sides and a script. Available audition slots are currently for Saturday  June 16th between 10am and 1130.  Please email for a slot.

Roles

Timothy: Male

20+ to play 17; a troubled kid, caught in survival mode at having to negotiate his dysfunctional family; he protects his fragility by forgoing any impulse control; probably in "special classes" because of his behavior problems.

 Pastor Greg: Male, 45-50

tries valiantly to fulfill his duties as the shepherd of his flock; seemingly supportive; underneath, however, it is clear that his altruism is fueled by needy loneliness; he has his meltdown point, and, out of nowhere, violence can flare up.

 Jason: male

20+ to play 17; seemingly mild-mannered and polite; retiring, inarticulate, and shy; has an alter-ego hand puppet who is extremely aggressive, foul-mouthed, shameless, and highly articulate. Expert puppetry skills and character voices required.

THE STORY: After the death of his father, meek Jason finds an outlet for his anxiety at the Christian Puppet Ministry, in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet small town of Cypress, Texas. Jason's complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door, and—most especially—his mother are thrown into upheaval when Jason's puppet, Tyrone, takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. HAND TO GOD explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us.

 REVIEWS:

"The fearsome critter [Tyrone], who takes possession of a troubled teenager's left arm in Robert Askins' darkly delightful play really inspires goose bumps as he unleashes a reign of terror…But he's also flat-out hilarious, spewing forth acid comedy that will turn those goose bumps into guffaws." —The New York Times.

"Furiously funny…Askins' most impressive talent is his ability to make us laugh while juggling those big themes that make life so terrifying: death, depression, alcoholism, sexual guilt, emotional repression, religious hypocrisy and the eternal battle between your good puppet and your bad puppet." —Variety.

"A scathingly funny scenario that steadily darkens into suspense and visions of hell, this fiery clash of the id, ego and superego is also an audacious commentary on the uses of faith, both to comfort and control us." —The Hollywood Reporter.

"I don't know which I want to do more: Sing Hallelujah—or wash its dirty little mouth out with soap. …Clearly a singular vision is at work here, with playwright Robert Askins venturing successfully into territory—satire—rich with potholes." —Deadline.

"HAND TO GOD is so ridiculously raunchy, irreverent and funny it's bound to leave you sore from laughing. Ah, hurts so good." —New York Daily News.
