High Flyin' Arts Camp

July 2 - July 13

These literature based art camps allow students to explore the performing arts of music, aerial dance, and creative movement, as well as theater, writing, drama, visual arts, and costume design. Each year, our classes use a classic children's story as a jumping off point for crafting choreography, creating costumes & sets, making works of art, and exploring music.

This summer's Arts Camps are based on the book Zen Shorts by Jon J Muth. Zen is a Japanese word that simply means meditation. "Zen shorts" are short meditations — ideas to puzzle over. Jon J Muth's remarkable book provides the opportunity to teach students to apply the valuable lessons from the story to their own lives — and to also see relationships between the illustrations and the story.

BOOK SUMMARY

One day, a giant panda named Stillwater lands in the backyard of Addy, Michael, and Karl's house. The panda and children all introduce themselves and become friends.

The next day, Addy goes to visit Stillwater at his house just a few backyards away. Stillwater shares a cake and a story with her. This story is about Stillwater's Uncle Ry, a poor man who is visited by a robber. Uncle Ry gives the robber his old tattered robe — the only thing he owns. But Uncle Ry is sad — if only he could have given more! The things that he treasures most are generosity and the beauty of the moon.

The next day, Michael goes to see Stillwater and hears the story of "The Farmer's Luck." The farmer has bad luck that turns out to be good luck. Then he has good luck that turns out to be bad luck. Michael learns that luck is random and cannot be judged or predicted.

The day after, Karl visits Stillwater. He is carrying a load of anger with him. Karl is angry that Michael always tells him what to do. Through the story of "A Heavy Load," Karl learns the importance of letting go of anger because it gets in the way of enjoying the moment.

And this is how Addy, Michael, Karl — and Stillwater — became friends.

Camp will culminate in an integrative performance for parents and friends on July 13th at 12:00pm.

*Campers bring their own lunch, snack, and water bottle.

The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre: Lovers Opens This Weekend!

From: The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre <director@scoundrelandscamp.org>
Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2018 10:52 AM
Subject: Lovers Opens This Weekend!

Lovers in Summer

Lovers by Irish dramatist Brian Friel opens this weekend!

Holly Griffith directs this bittersweet and ground-breaking hit from Ireland and Broadway 1968.  "Like Horton Foote and August Wilson, Brian Friel takes everyday speech and turns it into something not too far removed from poetry. He has a great ear—and a great heart." –The Wall Street Journal

Originally written in two parts –Winners and LosersWinners (part one) follows a starry-eyed teenage couple in a rural Irish town, grappling with an unexpected pregnancy and the influences of family, religion, and their own feelings of love and terror.

Featuring Bryn Booth, Adam Denoyer, Claire Hancock, and Christopher Pankratz and music director Jake Sorgen, the Tucson production of Lovers (Winners) plays Thursdays through Sundays at the Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre June 28-July 8.

In a career that spanned more than 50 years until his death in 2015, Brian Friel published 24 plays including Philadelphia, Here I Come! and the Tony- and Olivier-Award winning Dancing at Lughnasa. In Lovers, Friel experiments with form: two actors portray the teenagers meeting on a hilltop ostensibly to study together, but instead taking turns to plan and fret about their future. A second story, narrated by a second couple, depicts what happens after the young lovers leave the hill. The wistful and funny play carries audiences along like a river, and leaves them stunned with a heart-wrenching ending.

Underwritten by Planned Parenthood, The Scoundrel & Scamp's production of Lovers (Winners) will mark the first time Friel's play will be seen on stage in Tucson. The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre will be sharing all donations with Planned Parenthood for this show.

Located in the Historic Y in Tucson, Arizona, The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre is home to two state-of-the-art performance spaces - a 30-seat studio and a 100-seat proscenium- style mainstage. With an annual season comprising classics, modern plays, and and world-class original works, The S&S Theatre challenges, invigorates, and occasionally tickles the funny bone of audiences of all ages. In addition to the performance season, The S&S Theatre strives to cultivate the next generation of theatre-going audiences through classes, mentorship, and performance opportunities.
