SOUL, FAITH AND SPIRIT OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN CELEBRATED IN ARIZONA
THEATRE COMPANY'S CROWNS

Smash-hit musical play combines a soaring gospel score with tales of
"hattitude"

Arizona Theatre Company is raising the roof with a gospel score and a whole
lot of "hattitude" in the Arizona premiere of Regina Taylor's soul-stirring,
smash-hit musical play, Crowns. Based on the book by Michael Cunningham and
Craig Marberry, Crowns showcases the soul, faith and spirited style of
African-American women, embodied in the fabulous hats they wear to church.
Directed by Andrea Frye, Crowns runs from January 14 through February 4,
2006 at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave., in downtown Tucson
and continues its run in Phoenix from February 9 through February 26, 2006
at the Herberger Theater Center. The 2005-2006 season underwriters are I.
Michael and Beth Kasser.

This gospel-music-infused play celebrates the tradition, style and grace of
African-American women through the story of Yolanda, a tough
African-American girl from Brooklyn who is sent to live with her grandmother
in South Carolina after a family tragedy. Through "Mother Shaw" and her
empowering "hat queen" friends, Yolanda comes to understand the importance
of keeping traditions of the past alive, including the unique significance
that hats have among African-American women.

Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry's acclaimed book Crowns: Portraits of
Black Women in Church Hats captures the oral histories of fifty women
ranging from feisty twentysomethings to serene grandmothers. From the
beginning, Marberry believed his collection of oral histories would
translate well to the stage and touch many audiences. "Most of the dialogue
in the play comes directly from the oral histories in my book," Marberry
said. "So these are the stories of real women-proud, elegant, charming women
who touched my heart."

A sold-out hit in theatres across the country from New England to
California, and from Seattle to Miami, Crowns makes its Arizona premiere in
this brand new production. Crowns is a co-production with Portland Center
Stage where it will play from March 14 through April 9, 2006 and Actors
Theatre of Louisville where it will play from April 19 through May 14, 2006.

Regina Taylor received Helen Hayes and Audelco Awards for Crowns, which was
first produced at the McCarter Theatre and Second Stage. Ms. Taylor is

Chekov's The Cherry Orchard set in Atlanta in 1962 entitled Magnolia. Other
plays include Oobladee, Watermelon Rinds, Inside the Belly of the Beast,
Urban Zulu Mambo, Escape from Paradise and A Night in Tunisia.

Andrea Frye recently completed a six year stint at the Oregon Shakespeare

Nilo Cruz's Two Sisters and a Piano. She also recently directed Jar the
Floor for Alliance Theatre Company and For Colored Girls . . . at Portland

include Come and Gone, The Lion and the Jewel, Blues for an Alabama Sky, The
Screened-in Porch, The Ties That Bind, Do Lord Remember Me, The Colored

The Song of Jacob Zulu. Other credits include performances at Barter

Tucson: The Rogue Theatre presents THE FEVER

From: Cynthia Meier [mailto:cindym@theriver.com]
Sent: Tuesday, December 27, 2005 10:29 PM
Subject: The Rogue Theatre presents THE FEVER

The Rogue Theatre presents Wallace Shawn's The Fever - January 6-22, 2006 (Fri - Sat, 7:30 p.m.; Sun 2:00 p.m.)

A nameless person from a privileged world travels to a country in the midst of civil war. Suddenly ill, the narrator collapses in a hotel bathroom, and confronts an internal chorus of conflicting voices: dreams of comfort, images of violence, accusations of indifference, and cold-blooded arguments in favor of oppression. The central question: what, if anything, is a morally consistent way to live in the world as it is?

The Fever won the 1991 Obie Award for Best Play, and Booklist called it "a starkly written, harrowing journey into the dark night of the soul."

When Wallace Shawn originally presented the play, he performed it for small audiences in living rooms throughout Manhattan. The Rogue is taking a similar route by performing The Fever in some of Tucson's "living rooms."

Fridays, January 6, 13, and 20, 7:30 p.m., Center for Expressive Arts, 3838 East Ft. Lowell Road, just west of Alvernon
Saturdays, January 7, 14, and 21, 7:30 p.m., Mat Bevel Institute, 530 North Stone Avenue, just north of 6th Street
Sundays, January 8, 15, and 22, 2:00 p.m., Hotel Congress, 311 East Congress Street, right downtown

All tickets are $17. Call 326-7354 or see www.theroguetheatre.org for reservations and information.

The Fever is performed by Joseph McGrath and directed by Cynthia Meier.

Joseph McGrath, Artistic Director of The Rogue Theatre, is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Drama and a member of Actors’ Equity Association. He has toured with John Houseman’s Acting Company and acted with the Utah Shakespearean Festival. In Tucson, he is a frequent performer with Ballet Tucson and has also performed with the Arizona Theatre Company, Arizona Opera, Tucson Art Theatre, Arizona OnStage, Green Thursday, Damesrocket Theatre, and Old Pueblo Playwrights. Most recently, Joe directed The Rogue Theatres production of The Balcony and appeared in Arizona Operas Threepenny Opera.

Artist/Actor/Singer To-Ree-Nee Wolf Keiser, working with Arizona Onstage Productions, present a one day/evening event that examines the racially-charged American music considered acceptable in the early part of the 1900s and until recently. This is a one night only evening of live song/performance and film entitled Songs of the South: Hidden Melodies.

Song Of The South was an Academy Award winning* 1947 motion picture that was met with mixed reviews because of its portrayal of Black Americans. “Splash Mountain” is considered one of Disney World/Disneyland’s most popular attractions and is based on some of the characters, yet this film has been banned from American release, and the central character, Uncle Remus, has been eliminated from this attraction. Also, words have been changed in songs so characteristic of Disney classic repertoire, such as “Zip–A-Dee–Do-Dah,” that are still used in current promotions. However, the film has not been re-released in American screens since 1982, and even then several scenes featuring the controversial “Tar-Baby” sequence were edited out.

Arizona Onstage Productions, along with Freedom Heart Gallery/Random Wolf, present a thought -provoking evening of song, performance and music of that era. Nationally recognized artist/actor/singer To-Re Nee Wolf Keiser, along with members of Arizona Daily Star MAC Award winning Arizona Onstage Productions, present music from this and other projects of this era that reflect the changing response of racial ideals. To-Re-Nee Wolf Keiser and guest artists Karen Falkenstrom on Taiko drum and Heidi Wilson on Saxophone will perform twists on music of this film and that era. Music theatre singer/performers including Stephanie Sikes, Liz Cracchiolo-Redman and Edmon Johanson will also be singing music of this period.

After a short intermission, there will be a very rare Technicolor screening of the 1947 Disney motion picture Song of the South. This movie has never been released in the United States on video or DVD.

Many reviewers took issue with the film’s portrayal of African Americans. The film does not make clear that the action is set shortly after the Civil War, so that many viewers thought that black characters were slaves. Walter White, Executive Secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, wrote that the film gives a “dangerously glorified picture of slavery.” The National Negro Congress declared that the film “is an insult to the Negro people because it uses offensive dialect; it portrays the Negro as a low, common, inferior servant; it glorifies slavery. Ebony Magazine criticized the film’s “Uncle Tom/Aunt Jemima caricature.”  Harlem Congressman Adam Clayton Powell called on New York Theaters not to show it. Disney defended it as a “monument to the Negro race,” pointing out that it was set after the Civil War, and therefore could not be about slavery.  Others found it entertaining, and a few praised its positive portrayals of blacks and whites. Southern reviewers tended to like the film more than did reviewers from other parts of the country.

The film may not have intended a racist message and may well have sought to present harmonious relations between white and black southerners. It does not acknowledge the racial problems of the post-Civil War south, however, nor does it suggest that its African American characters are anything but happy with their subservient roles. *Actor James Baskett’s, (he won a special Academy Award that year for this film) humane portrayal of Uncle Remus is counterbalanced by Academy Award winning Hattie McDaniel’s more stereotyped portrayal of the house servant. The song ”Zip–A–Dee–Doo-Duh” won the Academy Award for Best Song of the Year. Several scenes of which African American farm workers march happily home from the fields, singing in unison. Even the cartoon characters—Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear—are African Americans.

One might ask why Arizona Onstage Productions and Freedom Heart/Random Wolf consider this an important event for Tucson. Artistic Director of Arizona Onstage Productions, Kevin Johnson, states, “Our mission statement is to expose people to music theatre that has importance in understanding our culture, as well as others, and to make celebration of differences and similarities that we might share and learn from.”   To-Ree-Nee Keiser makes this observation: “The dialog about ethnicity is still a challenging one. There are old hurts, wounds and major misunderstandings that still need to be addressed. We are our skin. We are the song of our bones. We are the color of our spirit. The richness of diversity is a wealth that this country still hasn’t tapped into thoroughly. We are living in a time when so much has been hidden. We need to shine a light on what is going on–we need to shine a light on what is hidden within ourselves.”

Songs of the South: Hidden Melodies will be presented on Sunday, January 8th, at Zuzi’s Theatre-738 N. 5th Ave, at the corner of Fifth Ave. and University. Tickets are $15 general and $12 student/teacher. Advance reservations are highly recommended, but unsold tickets will be available at the door. Performance times are 2:30 and 6:00. Call  520- 270-3332 to make reservations.

Tucson: Local Indie Feature - Still searching for leading ladies

 Sent: Tuesday, December 13, 2005 11:25 AM
Subject: [Tucson Actors] Local Indie Feature - Still searching for leading ladies

We posted an audition notice in September.  Despite the great turnout,
we are still searching for 2 actresses to play the leading female
roles:

Lead:  Ashley, 21 - Smart, Naive, Introverted, Journalism student.
Intimacy has always been a problem of hers until now.

Lead: Jennifer, 21 - Needy, Envious, Outgoing, Attractive.  Her need
to control situations gets her into serious trouble.

We have some smaller female roles available as well, including a small
speaking role.  We are looking for actresses, preferably with film
experience, who want to buff up their resume.  We are also looking for
models who want to give acting a try, especially for the smaller
roles.

This will be a very stylish and modern film about the problems with
communication and relationships in our highly connected culture.
Please visit http://www.myspace.com/awakethemovie for more
information.

All interested parties should email awakethemovie@gmail.com, with
headshots, resumes, and availability, and we will set up a time for an
audition.

Tucson -- The Beowulf Alley Theatre Company is tickled to present "Comedy,
Arizona," an evening of improvisational comedy with LaughingStock Comedy
Company beginning the Tuesday after Christmas and running through New Years
night 2006. All Shows are at 7:30 pm with two shows New Years Eve at 7:30
and 10 pm. Tickets are $15 and are available online at
http://beowulfalley.org/html/tickets.html and at the Beowulf Alley Theatre
box office by calling 520-882-0555. The Beowulf Alley Theatre is located at
11 South Sixth Avenue at Broadway in Tucson, Arizona.

LaughingStock Comedy Company is a touring company based in Tucson. Not a
club, they spend the majority of their time performing customized comedy
shows for corporate and association special events around the country, with
a few forays into Canada, Mexico and - most recently - Germany.

"These rare public appearances are a joy to perform because we are
unfettered by the constraints of our corporate work," according to Dean
Steeves, performing partner at LaughingStock. "We try to do a show in Tucson
annually, but so far we've only been able to do it every other year. We
really look forward to creating these wide-open, no-holds-barred comedy
improv shows."

Improvisational comedy is immediate and exciting. The shows are fresh,
original scenes based on audience input. The audience fills in the details
of this distinctive comedy by volunteering a variety of suggestions
throughout the performance - emotions, objects, activities, occupations,
locations, for example - and becomes part of the fun as they watch their
ideas mushroom into comedy mayhem.

"We're really looking forward to performing in the new Beowulf space," says
Steeves. "It's perfect for our kind of intimate relationship with the
audience. LaughingStock's players are seasoned, funny and looking forward to
creating big fun with the hometown crowd again."
