THE ROGUE THEATER'S "AN ILIAD" CREATES A SENSE OF EVERYWAR WAGED BY EVERYMAN IN THE CENTURIES OF DEADLY VIOLENCE FOLLOWING THE NINE-YEAR TROJAN WAR

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Having a timeless presence, Patty Gallagher creates a soulful lament as The Poet in "An Iliad," beginning her tale with the Trojan War and continuing across the centuries with her plea to finally stop all wars.

Far more than a play, The Rogue Theatre's production of “An Iliad” performed by Patty Gallagher with pianist-composer Jake Sorgen is a complete theatrical experience.

Praise-worthy phrases pile up, the more you know the more amazing this feat becomes. Presented on basically an enormous bare stage, with Gallagher the only cast member and Sorgen providing all the musical accompaniment and aural atmosphere, your own imagination becomes the most active ingredient.

There are no costume changes, no sets, no special effects save the production of “An Iliad” itself, which becomes one very big special stage effect.

Unseen but always present in her handiwork is the compelling direction by Cynthia Meier, as the three artists cleverly conspire to create such a fulsome telling of the equally seductive and deadly qualities that are the eternal nature of war.

This particular retelling of the classic epic nine-year siege of Troy by the relentless Greeks begins with Robert Fagles' translation of Homer's epic poem.

Then Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare developed the idea of what this war that launched a thousand war ships would sound like if it were told in today's casual language which has turned the destructive powers of war into just another topic for the evening news.

In this plain-faced setting, those vaguely familiar Greek names – Achilles, Aphrodite, Agamemnon, Hector, Petroclus and others – pop up like road signs from a distant past. We recognize them without knowing exactly why.

Gallagher as the timeless Poet begins her 95-minute performance with the lament “Every time I sing this song, I hope it is the last time.”

Before she has finished, before she recites a shamefully lengthy list of all wars from the god-obsessed Trojans through the world's many civil wars and world wars – from the Greeks of old to the complete sadness of Gaza today, we are asked aren't all wars actually the same war?

If there is an Everyman representing all humanity, is there an Everywar representing all wars? Since that tumultuous beginning, haven't we been fighting the same war over and over again? Is there any difference among them? Dead bodies are added up like scores in a ball game. Really, is there any such thing as a Great War?

Gallagher throws herself into this maelstrom of questions, filling her tale with shaded changes of pace, levels of volume, a spinning kaleidoscope of war's clutches, her blue eyes blazing. To watch her and not be affected by her performance is impossible.

“An Iliad” continues through March 10, with performances Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m, matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m., in The Rogue Theatre, 300 E. University Blvd. Tickets are $47 general admission, $15 for students with ID (when seats are available).

ATC Cabaret Series Auditions

From: Nick Cianciotto <ncianciotto@arizonatheatre.org>
Sent: Monday, February 26, 2024 1:23 PM
Subject: Re: Cabaret Series Auditions

There are two projects that we are auditioning for. One is an event called "Fulta and Friends" that will be a live singing Cabaret hosted by the lovely Drag Queen, Fulta Burstyn. The first show will be on Sunday, April 7.

The second is a bit more vague at this point, but The Temple of Music and Art and Arizona Theatre Company is interested in beginning a "Cabaret Series."

For both events, we are looking at either a monthly or bi-monthly model that will likely be held in the Lounge at The Temple of Music and Art. We are looking for talented and professional individuals who are able to rehearse more on their own than in scheduled, in person rehearsals. Although there will be meetings/rehearsals, we are hoping to make this easy on everyone's time and shooting for more "collaborative productions."

We are booking in 15 minutes intervals for Wednesday, March 27 and Thursday, March 28 from 5pm-9pm. If you or anyone you know is interested, we would love to hear them sing.

ATC presents Master Class

“Master Class,” the Tony-winning play by Terrence McNally, tells the story of the uncompromising opera diva Maria Callas as she delivers a life altering master class to students at an elite opera training program. During the class, she encounters three vastly different students who are by turns hilariously crushed, soulfully uplifted, and profoundly inspired by her singular artistry. Based on a series of real-life classes Callas delivered at Juilliard, “Master Class” inspires us, transports us, and transforms us by carving a window into the soul of one of the most complicated and celebrated artists of the 20th century who pushed the boundaries of artistic sacrifice and quality.

Casting Call: male character, 40-60

TUCSON ACTORS: A single male character, 40-60, will play a used car salesman that defies cliches. When a former buyer appears with his life hanging in the balance, the salesman responds with unexpected insight, compassion, and a level of buoyancy. All to help the car owner pause before taking a final act of desperation.

To be filmed in Tucson in late March or early April, this role demands a level of maturity that can’t be coached on-camera. A diverse range of actors for THE KEYS is desired, with preparation and four hours of ‘on the lot’ shooting expected. With the silent person behind the wheel portrayed by a world-class master of physical theater, this is an exceptional chance to step forward professionally.

The paid role will support a film destined for release to middle- and high-school instructors in support of critical thinking by their students. As well as to a larger audience who may know someone in crisis.

Please consider this post in its entirety before submitting an audition: Final casting in late February will be done with a script available for use. Preliminary submissions are requested no later than March 6th.

Woven Productions, formerly centered on corporate projects, is about to premiere a series of self-funded, thought-provoking short films (under 10:00) that include THE KEYS.

All with a prevailing sense of mission centered in redemptive, creative storytelling.

PLEASE CONNECT THROUGH MESSAGING AS A STARTING POINT, with links to your work on YouTube or VIMEO.
